F1 2006 Review: The strange side of ’06

Let’s take a look back at the lighter side of the F1 news from 2006.

If you know all the words to “Niki Lauda hat ein Ohr”, laughed at the ITV report which slated their own Formula One coverage, groaned at the gut-wrenching awfulness of Talladega Nights, and voted for (or against) Michael Schumacher’s nomination to ‘Weaseliest Sportsperson of 2006’, then you don’t need to read this post.

If not, you missed out on some fun in ’06. Catch up below…

Niki Lauda: Has One Ear – You have to love Youtube. Here’s some bonkers F1 fans hailing the unique appearance of F1 legend Niki Lauda.

Maxi Mosley inside the place – remember Rappin’ Ronnie Regan? Give it up for MC Mosley…

‘MFI’ gags irk MF1 fans – Well, at least they don’t have to worry about that any more.

Bernie denies ‘VIP GP’ – A spectator-less Grand Prix? Sounds ridiculous – but it happened in the FIA GT series this year…

ITV rubbish their own coverage – According to ITV their F1 coverage is “numbing”, ?â?ó?óÔÇÜ?¼?àÔÇ£poorly timed” and “ad-intensive”. There’s nothing like honesty.

Volkswagen don’t know the meaning of fast – Stupid little cartoon character things aren’t fast. F1 cars are fast. So stop dossing around with daft marketing gimmicks, VW, and join the party!

A Formula One farmer? – 1979 F1 champion Jody Scheckter turns to biodynamic organic farming, a phrase so tedious I can hardly be bothered to type it.

Michael Schumacher: Weasel? Apparently not – Michael Schumacher was nominated for the Weaseliest Sportsperson of 2006 Award, but lost to Barry Bonds.

For sale: Sauber Mercedes C11, ex-Michael Schumacher – Will it have appreciated even further following his retirement?

Best race of ’05 had fewest viewers – Note to all those people who think F1 is boring – it doesn’t help if you miss the best race of the year.

Willis and the wind-tunnel shunt – Speculation abounds as to exactly why Geoff Willis left Honda.

The best F1 toy car ever? – We play with a life-size F1 car with a PlayStation 2 built in. Joy!

Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby – Wasn’t even funny in an ironic way. Thinking up tortuous insults to hurl at it was, though.

  1. Technically, ITV didn’t slate their own coverage. Teletext is a completely different company. ITV has no say over what appears on it. Mind you, what Teletext had to say about it isn’t far off the mark!

  2. Ah, near enough – if they’re not quality checking what appears on their own channel then more fool them!
