Judging entirely by their driving and demeanor, it seems Hamilton is still just plain thrilled to be driving a race car, and a McClaren F1 to boot. At the same time, Alonso seems to be more interested in the respect he doesn’t feel he’s getting. Alonso has been brash and even wild most of the season, while Hamilton has demonstrated breathtaking car control and astounding precision. I’ve never enjoyed watching Alonso drive, he’s too hard and forced. But Hamilton is an absolute pleasure to watch. His handling of chicanes is a thing of absolute beauty, with the car rotating and sliding at the absolute edge of performance. I was immediately impressed with Kubica the same way last year, and in a more competitive car, there’s no doubt he’d be providing a lot of excitement dueling with Hamilton. Let’s all hope he recovers nicely and we get to see those two go head to head in the not too distant future.

Yes Keith, that’s what is unbelievable, that Hamilton in his rookie season is in more than equal terms with Alonso, who is recognized as an outstanding and experienced driver.

Well, first of all let me say that I am a big fan of Fernando Alonso and that I am completely disappointed in his performance at the Canadian Grand Prix. I would have expected the type of mature and error free race that Hamilton had for a two-time world champion and the error filled race that Alonso had for a rookie.

Since car performance is so important in formula 1, how you do in comparison with your teammate is the best yardstick to measure how good you really are. I think there is no doubt that Fernando Alonso is an excellent racecar driver. If we accept that, then it is obvious that Hamilton is a superb racer. He has been in the podium in all six races, out qualified Alonso in Bahrain and in Canada, where he was racing for the first time, and has driven extremely fast while making very few mistakes. I would not be surprised if he breaks a lot of the supposedly unbreakable records that Schumacher currently holds.

Thumbs up for Lewis on a well deserved victory but lets be fair and not read too much into it. I understand that he drove flawlessly from start to finish but when actually was he challenged? At no moment was his position at jeopardy. Thats the plain truth.

As for Alonso it was a bad day, but it could have been much worse. 2 years back he broke his suspension leading the race… that is much worse than this result.

I felt the drivers of the race were Wruz and Heikki(for the length of the race) Alonso and Sato(in parts).

Well, we haven’t seen Hamilton racing in wet yet. The only wet run was probably Sat practice in Monaco. But looking at the way he drives around tracks that he only knew from Playstation (Melbourne, now Montreal), this guy is simply good.

Of course very few rookies get the fortune to start their careers with a top team – you have to go back to Jacques Villeneuve for comparison. He won his fourth race, but that year his team, Williams, really had no opposition.

Villeneuve that year still had significant weak spots in his game – in the wet, for example. Hamilton so far has been quick, consistent, shown great race craft… really there aren’t any obvious weaknesses so far.

Is Lewis Hamilton’s best-ever rookie performance due to a level of skill we’ve not seen before, even from the greats of F1, or is he just lucky to get his rookie drive in this year’s strongest team?

For me the fact that he’s beating the current and 2-time champion in an equivalent car says a lot.

its been reported that kubica has a (badly?) broken leg but thats it thankfully.

i honestly didnt know how he is was when it first happened. thank god for the hans device really
