IRL-Champ Car merger announcement expected

According to Speed’s Robin Miller the long-awaited IRL Indycar / Champ Car World Series merger is a done deal and an announcement is due soon.

Such a thing has been promised several times before and I’m won’t believe it until I see Newman-Haases and Penskes sharing the tarmac at Long Beach, but I think even hardened cynics are beginning to suspect that this might actually be the one.

Whether American open wheel racing can get back on its feet in the coming years is another matter entirely. But it certainly won’t as long as the two series are fielding a dozen cars each and all the best drivers are defecting to NASCAR.

The rumoured unification is the top two subjects of discussion on the official Indy Racing website, which makes it pretty clear the fans are long tired of the bickering.
