Just finished watching the Indycar Grand Prix at Watkins Glen. Disappointing race for both Dan Wheldon and Justin Wilson. Wilson had qualified so well too.
Very bemused by Scott Dixon’s mistake behind the safety car, very unlike him and a tough break for Ryan Briscoe.
The biggest ‘Youtube’ moment was Danica Patrick’s fuba pitstop, crashing into Chip Ganassi’s teams pit slot.
An absolutely priceless moment as one of the Ganassi mechanics places Patrick’s destroyed front wing across her front axle. If you thought Hamilton’s gaffe in Canada was embarrassing, this was far worse and far more dangerous.

I’ve watched IRL racing off and on for years and cannot shake the impression that they spend more time under a yellow flag than a green. Is it just me?

You’re not wrong there – at the previous IRL round (a very short oval, not helped by the increase in runners from the Champcar/IRL reunification), around one third of the ENTIRE RACE was spent under yellow.
At Watkins Glen there was a long period of green running, and the drivers obviously decided that we weren’t getting the full American experience, so they started to crash into each other regularly. And when the SC was out, they continued to crash into each other regularly to keep it out, which was nice of them.

I don’t understand why special coverage is being given in the worthless IndyCar series, GP2, yes its the feeder for our fav series, even F3000, formula renault, they all are, but Indycar??

I don’t agree it’s worthless by the way. Look at how big CART was in the early ’90s and the effect it had on F1. Post-reunification IndyCar has the potential to replicate that.

I can understand it Keith, just that I get a feeling of being duped to watch a staged race everytime I tune into Indycar. It caters only the ‘I need drama!’ fans, not the purist fans of racing like this community..

Know what you mean a bit, though it’s still less staged than NASCAR, I feel. It’s kind of the halfway house between F1 and NASCAR, though it’s a bit closer to NASCAR than Champcar was.

This is true. There’s nothing really wrong with that, though. The BTCC is similar in that respect I’d say. Sometimes F1 is guilty of not producing enough drama. And I think it’s good to pay attention to other series. We’ll all plump for F1 first and foremost I suspect, but there are elements you can get in e.g. GP2/Indycar that you don’t get in F1…
[I will quickly qualify that by saying that F1 2008 is doing a good job of being both "pure" and "dramatic". 9 races in and we've had, in my opinion, 4 really memorable races - 2 dry and 2 wet (Australia and Canada, and Monaco and Britain), and Malaysia wasn't bad either. I think we're already at least level, if not slightly ahead on exciting races compared to the whole of 2007 which was in my view only interesting on paper because of the relative closeness of the title fight.]

thing is the url does say “f1 fanatic”, and seeing as i subscribe to both sites, you’re telling me the same info twice.
a difficult balance i guess. still my favourite quote of the day that one.
