FIA ‘not expected’ to support medals plan

27 November 2008 by Keith Collantine

Bernie Ecclestone’s plan to install an Olympics-style ‘medals’ scoring system for formula one in 2009 may not be approved, British newspapers report.

After former team owner Eddie Jordan slammed the idea as “nonsense”, the London newspaper The Times said it “is likely to be rejected by the FIA”.

F1 chief executive Ecclestone, 78, insists that the teams fully support the proposal, but it must first be approved by the FIA at a forthcoming meeting of the World Motor Sport Council.

The Times said the FIA “is not expected” to support the scheme, and even if a green light is shown, “it would not be implemented” until 2010.

An unnamed ‘team insider’, meanwhile, told The Guardian that the concept “has certainly not been agreed by all the teams”.

The Daily Telegraph said Ecclestone’s proposal “may not even be formally on the agenda” for the FIA meeting.

    Now I’m seriously confused.
Is the ‘medals’ proposal just Bernie flying a kite? Is he doing this to obscure some other dastardly plan? Or is he expecting the FIA to slap the idea down so that Bernie can further justify a non-FIA series?

  2. Adrian says:

Or has he finally lost it???

  3. DG says:

I’ve never been too sure whether Bernie agrees with Max’s KERS / standard engine proposals or not.
Is this Bernies retaliation? Will F1 become a playground for silly ideas while the teams, the manufacturers, the sponsors and the fans lose interest in the whole thing?

  4. Bungle says:

    thank god for that…

  5. Anonymouse says:

    Good.

The Medals system is a stupid idea.

  6. Patrickl says:

There must be some sensible people in the teams who realise that this plan is daft. I really hope they will knock it down. I also hope they restore the old points scheme though. Or something similar.

  7. Manatcna says:

It would be a victory for common sense

  8. Lustigson says:

I’d be both surprised and disappointed should this whole medal scheme become reality. Silly thing is that I’d probably watch the races despite it. As would many others, I suspect.

  9. Garyc says:

This idea is so silly, that upon first hearing about it, I thought it must have sprung from the brain of Spanky Max. Had this been true, it would have been adopted immediately, but since it is not his idea, it will be rejected by the mad twit. So not to worry, it is DOA.

  10. the limit says:

On first hearing about the ‘medals’ system in Formula One being considered, I supported it as I believed that it would have encouraged more overtaking. However, having read the opinions of people on this site, and those of Eddie Jordan, I am against the idea.
I am more for the FIA being told where to go, than for a change to the points system.

  11. Andy says:

Maybe the championship being decided on the last corner of the last race just isn’t exciting enough for Bernie. We need a new scoring system. Perhaps, to crank up the excitement, races should be decided by a panel of judges, let’s call them “stewards” who decide the outcome of the race after it’s finished according to who behaved the nicest on the track. Oh, wait..

do you write for Private Eye Andy ? :P
