Di Resta: F1 “a possibility” for 2009

31 December 2008 by Keith Collantine

Paul di Resta has revealed he is “close” to securing a Formula 1 role for 2009.

It was believed the 22 year-old Scot had dropped out of contention, after Force India confirmed an unchanged driver lineup for next year.

But the Daily Record newspaper reports that a test role remains a possibility.

“I’m close to putting pen to paper on a deal. Formula 1 remains a possibility,” di Resta, who drives for Mercedes in the DTM series, said.

The report said di Resta, who is being managed by Lewis Hamilton’s father Anthony, might assume a straight testing role, or split his duties with staying in the German touring car category.

what is the point of being a test driver these days, you’d only get a few laps at the end of the season

  2. Seedy001 says:

Exactly, David. I hope Paul’s career hasn’t been ruined the way GP’s career was by the McLaren-Mercedes/DTM association. If he can’t get a drive in F1 for ‘09 then I think he should be in a top GP2 team.

I suppose there is still the Toro Rosso drive and… the “Honda opportunity”….

  4. PJA says:

With the testing ban how would a testing role work? Unless a team decided to use a third driver on Friday, something I think would be highly unlikely because would a team want to take track time away from a race driver unless they needed the money from a pay driver? The only F1 work he would get during the season would be sat around during a Grand Prix weekend, only needed if one of the race drivers got injured.
