I’m at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend – here’s my first batch of photographs of F1 cars.

This set includes the 1988 McLaren-Honda MP4/4 (ex-Ayrton Senna), an ex-Michele Alboreto Ferrari and the gorgeous Benetton-Ford B188. Plus, several cars from the 2008 F1 season.

Pictures in this gallery: 275

More pictures will be added to this gallery during the weekend, so check back later. If you have a request for pictures of a particular car at Goodwood this year, please let me know below.

You can open the three shots and see there are not only trees…

having read these articles about goodwood and overtaking it has got me wanting to watch some season reviews over the weekend, while not doing the july 4th thing. Only i can’t work out what seasons to watch from 1975 to say 2006.

can anyone suggest some years for me please?

    • Martin said on 3rd July 2009, 21:53

I like the cars from that era the best. They just look good.

      • scunnyman said on 4th July 2009, 3:02

Wow! I didn’t know they all got released on DVD, I was expecting you to say you had a bunch in BETA a couple more in VHS, Laser disc and so on…pretty impressive. I hope
I can find a couple using torrents.

            Scunnyman, IMHO

            1. 1982 the wildest, most tragic season F1 has ever had.
            2. 1994 The rise and fall and rise of schumi. And of course, Ayrton’s last races.
            3. 1989 It all builds to the most spectacularly tense race at suzuka.
            4. 1997 not just Jerez, a great season.
            5. 2003 Schumi’s best chapionship, he wasn’t in the best car, or the second best, but still won.

Looks like you had a good day, Keith.
I don’t remember it that way, but the seating position on that Ferrari 126 is so far forward. No wonder the FIA legislated!
    Enjoy tomorrow.

Very Good Pictures, Im eagerly waiting more! But it makes me raise just a tiny grumble about this website – when I click a thumbnail i want to see a significantly bigger version, not just a moderatly bigger image!

Yes I know I just have to click the image again, but thats a whole extra click, and another extra click to go back! When will there be a website designed for the morbidly lazy? ;)

I was there today, it was brilliant (my first time going on the Friday). Of the cars pictured above, I saw all of them except the B188.

I also saw David Coulthard in the paddock (I have a couple of pictures of him), but unfortunately I wasn’t quick enough to get his autograph :(

I have a load of pictures but I’m going on holiday tomorrow and won’t get a chance to share them. However, I’m sure Keith will provide a comprehensive selection of pictures anyway ;)

What the hell happened with that Red Bull?!?!

It’s the 2006 one, but with the shark fin, slicks, and 2009-like paint scheme.

      • zplol said on 4th July 2009, 6:17

It almost looks like they scrubbed the green ring on those slicks.
Def. the worst looking of the lot. Too bad because the RB4 was my favorite car last year

  8. matt said on 4th July 2009, 1:27

I didn’t realise how stupid last years shark fins looked. The high wings make them look alright this year, especially on the red bull where it joins up. Can’t wait to be there on Sunday!

  9. Macca said on 4th July 2009, 6:34

After haveing got used to the look of the 2009 cars, the 2008 cars don’t look so good. With the rear wing being so low last year, looking at them now they look like thay are 2009 cars that have had a bus dropped on them and flattened them. And with the shark fin they just look plain ugly.

    What does everyone else think?

    • I’d say the MP4-23 in the configuration it’s shown here looks the best of the 2008 cars, before it received its performance enhancing dumbo ears!

I really like the 2009 cars, slick tyres, tall rear wings, proper looking diffusers and front wings low to the ground. Although the 2008 cars were coated in aerodynamic pornography, you’ve got to like the clean lines the cars have this year.

  10. mp4-19b said on 4th July 2009, 8:57

who is chris goodwin, the driver who drove mp4-23? is he a test driver with mclaren?

    • Tim said on 4th July 2009, 17:26

He was an aspiring single seater driver, who made it as far as F3000 years ago. He then switched to GTs and drove McLaren F1 sportscars for a while. I think he also does some commentating.

    • twinkle said on 8th July 2009, 14:30

Chris is Mclaren Automotive’s chief test driver, but also works closely as a development driver for the F1 team. He’s a seasoned racer across many formats and currently races a Ferrari in the Fia Gt competition. on top of all that he co-presents for Star (Fox Asia) on F1 and is a an occasional Stig on BBC’s ‘Top Gear’ (most Mercs, Mclarens and that Caparo thing to start with)

  11. HounslowBusGarage said on 4th July 2009, 15:00

He principally drove in the FIA GT series, but he’s raced everything from Formula Ford to F3000. As well as doing duty with MacLaren antiques he is sometimes an F1 race commentator for ESPN India.
Allegedly, he has also been the Stig on ocassion . . .

  12. scunnyman said on 4th July 2009, 16:39

Thankyou Terry fabulous i’ll add those seasons to the 1991 suggested by mp4-19

  13. Adrian said on 4th July 2009, 19:05

Wow those 2008 cars look ugly!!

And to think 6 months ago we all thought the 2009 cars looked ugly, now I prefer 2009 to 2008…

Keith, how about a specific poll, 2008 vs 2009..??

  14. Keith Collantine (@keithcollantine) said on 4th July 2009, 22:12

I’ve just added some new pictures (at the top of the gallery), was using a new lens hood today which has brought out the colour in some of the cars rather better. Also did some pictures around the pits area of the cars in varying states of disassembly. Have taken over 3,000 photos already and only uploaded a fraction of them!
