F1 testing at Jerez concludes today

Well it was fun while it lasted but today we see our final F1 action of 2009 before the new cars appear next year.

At Jerez today Ferrari will juggle their car between three different drivers. And Bertrand Baguette will get a second day in the cockpit, this time with BMW, who must’ve liked what they saw when he tested for Renault on Tuesday. Follow today’s test session below.

        Daniel Riccardo is definatly a chance for a drive in F1 next year. With the times he is producing he has shown he is quick enoght and he has shown his fittnes with over 200 laps in the first 2 days.

        But what really works in his fovour is that he is a Red Bull contracted driver and there is still a seat open at Torro Rosso.

    Also, i dont know much about the Jerez track. Is it a point and squirt track or fast and following. Basically trying to work out which cars are more likely to do well.

      It’s point and squirt, and not really very fast anywhere.

      During testing the cars will be run in all sorts of configurations. For example, yesterday, many of the cars ran with loads of ballast onboard to simulate 2010 race distances, and some teams don’t allow low fuel level runs for young test drivers. So trying to say that any one driver is faster than another during testing is just not going to work.

      Remember that these young drivers are ‘testing’; It’s not a ’shoot-out’.

    Is it just me or is this test really fascinating?!?

    The fact that we all know which cars are quick after a long hard season means that you really can see which drivers are putting in outstanding performances…

    Ricciardo is currently flying! 1:17.418, a whole 1.8s up from Hulkenberg.

    It should be noted that if someone is running fairly low fuel and someone else is running 2010 levels of fuel weight, then lap times can be in the region of five seconds difference!

    I’m a little disappointed about young italian drivers. They are comparing with the best drivers of the same age, and they are looking quite slower.
    We still need to wait a long time to have another winning driver, I guess…not to say to win a championship. :-(
    This is strange. Motorsport is very popular in Italy but we are not having a gret value guy since a lot of time. We could start a discussion, anytime.

      I’m a little disappointed about young italian drivers.

      At the risk of repeating myself we have to remember that this is ‘testing’ and not a ’shoot-out’.

      The teams are far more interested in using whatever drivers they can legally get their hands on to do this three day test.

      I know that Ferrari and McLaren are doing lots of heavy running with full tanks and ballast in order to simulate 2010 fuel weight.

      The driver of that car may only run the car until it is down to a fuel weight for which they have lots of data already and then bring the car back in. Hence the not particularly quick drivers lap time.

    Ricciardo is incredibly still 1.6s up on 2nd place!

    He has been very impressive all week, especially considering he has not driven in any major feeder, or international series yet.

    However, I hope he doesn’t get into F1 in 2010, I think he would be much better off maturing a bit more in the feeder series.

        I understand your point (and probably should have read it a bit more closely above ;) ), but his pace over the three days has been very good – and I don’t think that this is just because of a different fuel program.

        Even James Allen has said on his blog that Red Bull are apparently very pleased with Ricciardo’s work.

        Hey, we’re going through withdrawals! Lol, it is a bit disconcerting that we’re all so desperate for F1 action that we’re poring over largely irrelevant test times.

          Yes, when an Aussie or non-brit is topping the times they are irrelevant… Would so many people be posting that on here they are meaningless if a British driver was at the top of the times? I think not!

    Interesting that BMW are testing Baguette. I thought they were only there in essence to test drivers they had promised a tes to when they were still “in” F1. I wonder if that’s the start of them thinking about 2010 as Sauber.
