Can Fernando Alonso make it two wins in a row?

It’s time to make your Australian Grand Prix predictions if you want to be in with a chance of winning one of our great prizes.

The overall winner of our Predictions Championship will win British Grand Prix tickets and two winners will win F1 DVDs and an F1 painting this weekend.

You’ve got to make your prediction before the next practice session starts so enter now!

I’ve had a few people asking when the competition was opened for this race. The competition opening was announced in the daily round-up a few days ago. To make sure you don’t miss it you can subscribe to F1 Fanatic by Twitter, RSS or email.

Need some inspiration for your predictions? Read our practice coverage and analysis here:

The prizes

This year we’re giving away a pair of prizes every race weekend.

On top of that at the end of the year the top 12 finishers all get prizes – and whoever scores the highest overall will be going to the 2011 British Grand Prix. Here are the prizes in full:

Grand prize: Two grandstands tickets to the 2011 British Grand Prix

The person who scores the most points in the 2010 F1 Fanatic Predictions Championship will win grandstand tickets to the 2011 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

This is the first time we’ve offered F1 race tickets as a prize at F1 Fanatic and I hope you all agree it’s a fitting reward for the F1 expert who can best predict who will be on top in 2010.

The grand prize winner will receive tickets to all three days of the 2011 British Grand Prix with reserved grandstand seating for the race.

Second place prize: An F1 painting of your choice

The second place finisher in the championship will win an F1 painting by Rob Ijbema.

You get to choose which F1 driver, present or past, will feature in the painting. Or you can pick one of the other motor racing paintings on Rob’s site Car-a-day.

Runners-up prizes: Autocourse 2010-2011

The ten players who finish in third to 12th positions in the championship will win a copy of the 2010-2011 edition of Autocourse.

The highly respected journal of Formula 1 and other major international four-wheeled racing series is published at the end of every season.

This year the publication marks its 60th anniversary edition.

Race winners prize: The Lotus Story DVD Box Set

Duke Video are supplying the prize for the player who gets the highest score in each round.

With the Lotus name returning to F1 in 2010 what better prize than a DVD box set showing the history of this great team. This four-disc set “The Lotus Story” chronicles Lotus’s participation in F1 from the company’s beginning in 1948 up to its F1 withdrawal in 1994.

Duke are also offering a special promotion exclusive to all F1 Fanatic readers – whenever you order from them you can get 15% off using the promotional code F1Fanatic at the checkout.

Race runners-up prize: F1 race winner print

The second place finisher in each race will win a 40x35cm print of the race winner from Motorsport in Print.

How to enter

Entries will open in the week before every race. You have until the start of free practice three on Saturday to make your predictions.

You can post your predictions for the first race now below. After making your prediction you should see a notice saying ‘your entry has been saved’.

Each player may predict the pole sitter and the top five finishers in the race. See below for the rules in full.

Please try to pick an original and distinctive user name – something a bit more descriptive than just a first name. We had a lot of very similar entries last year!

    1. It would be cool to have a summary of the predictions with total votes for the top drivers for each position.

      1. I’ll second that.

      2. It’s something we could do but not until after all the predictions have been entered – wouldn’t want it to influence people’s voting.

        1. Yeah. I forgot to put that. Maybe between quali and race. :)

        2. Is it possible for the people who have already submitted their predictions to see what are the predictions till date?

It helps to kill time between race weekends!

Not to be overtly flattering, but it is really amazing that you have quit your job to focus on this fulltime and you are doing an amazing job. Hope this fulfils all your dreams and ambitions vis-a-vis F1. Good luck!!

P.S: I requested you about an article on how setup affects the tyres…whenever you are free, hope you write something on it or maybe a link if there is something already available.

          Thanks.

      3. I used to create some statistics for last seasons predictions, but now the predictions are hidden until you vote. Better not put up statistics showing the numbers then.

I could put something up after the prediction closes.

    2. Thanks for the confirmation message Keith! (although, to be entirely sure I mailed my prediction as well, if there’s no problem this time I will refrain from such spam in the future :-))

      1. I do want to highlight a little practical issue though, I did my prediction from my work, so now I’m not able to see the table from home. If you’re optimizing in the future, maybe a little button to see the table would be nice

        1. Will keep in mind, thanks.

    3. Love the new layout … gr8 work keith n team

    4. Surprised to see one name come up so regularly for the win.

    5. Can’t shake off the feeling Vettel’s gonna wreck and Webber’s gonna blow his motor.

Hamster gets a clean sweep. Pole, All Laps Led, Fastest Lap, Win.

      Ferrari’s and Merc’s behind him.

Also have a feeling less than half the cars finish.

    6. Last yera was easy it was just Button, Bar, Vet and then Web at times. There is the big 4, room for a surprise, possibly a wet weather race. I have no clue.

      1. Alonso are there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

        1. It’s a slang that is used in Indian schools here wherein we screw around with the grammar. Good fun it is.

I think Alonso is gonna do it again..though Vettel might take the pole. He is just holding back until he knows exactly what he can unleash.

          What say?

    7. I hope there is a bit of fun in this race, a wet race would definitely spice things up! I would also like to see some less conservative lap times from Button.

      Bring on the rain!!

    8. Re: the prediction table. Is there a difference between Pole and Position 1? Or should Position 1 not be there?

Its just that I chose different drivers for each but I am now unsure that I should have!

      1. Position 1 is for the winner of the race;)

      2. From the rules:

Each player may predict the pole sitter and the top five finishers in the race.

        1. Ah okay, I understand…pole is for quali and positions for the race…sorry to be so dumb! It will prove to be an interesting race if my predictions are anything to go by then!

    9. Please help! I cannot remember the username that matches my email address so when I try to enter a predictions it says ‘Email address does not match previous entry’.

      1. Ignore that, I worked it out!

    10. TBH, I would expect the Mclaren laptop to be more laden with data than Ferrari’s!!!

      1. why do you say that?

        1. lol, plz ignore.

    11. How did you get access to the predictions till date?

    12. I’ve changed my user name (again) since Bahrain, so this is effectively the first race of the season for me. Just like Melbourne should be!

My vote is very predictable- both Red Bull’s and Ferrari’s plus Hamilton

      1. That’s true…all that matters is the exact positions!

P.S: same predictions here…both Red Bull’s and Ferrari’s and Hamilton.

      2. But Ned – we love you absodiddilidockely dude. Why the identity crisis?

Sorta got the synching up of Twit with live chat but…

Maybe we need a global handle website which could be portal for all. Only danger is that you end up being ‘GiantTurtle32765’ because too many folk read Terry Pratchett.

        1. Yeah I’m guessing I’d end up being Ned Flanders no. 54092 or something

Identity crisis over- Ibroke up with Ned the other day but relaised how much I missed him and ended up crawling right back

    13. I was on turn 5 for most of the day Kubica looks like absolute lightning. By far the quickest through there.

      1. Really good to hear first hand stuff Hamish, thank you. Turn 5 is a slight lift or even flat for the brave on low fuel. Must of sounded awesome!

Any others to watch out for sir?

    14. Ye gads. Missed both practice sessions so relying on your super-focused analysis of the sessions, a personal hunch that FI are nipping at the heels of the ‘big 4’ and the weird shape of the unexpected tea leaves on my monitor (tea bag broke).

Alonso is a cunning genius – is he the new Schumacher (Love/Hate thingy)? And if he is, has Schumacher become the new Damon? Talented but over the, um, hill and in the wrong car. And if Jenson is Alain ‘da Professor’ Prost, does that make Hamilton Senna with his aggressive style? Could end in tears. But then Massa becomes Barrichello, or perhaps Patrese and Nico’s doing a Vettel. Then what do we do with the Sennas, Barrichellos, Schumachers and Vettels we already have on the grid? If only the race could turn out to be this jumbled.

Pole and thus win to Alonso. Sutil will be luckier. Vettel will not. Webber will finally make the sun beam in his home GP. Massa will do good, but start to get cranky about faster teammate. Hamilton will be fast, because he is, but McLaren haven’t quite got there yet. And Button? Respectable, but new team.. yeah, new team. Was there another German I missed?

      1. Sea dog, you’ve hit the very real nail on the very proverbial head.

Hey, did anyone catch the commentators opinion on Schumacher not backing off when the track had been red flagged in practice 1.
Christian Horner (think it was him) wanted a 10 place grid penalty for the next 2 races.
Has anything else been heard about this?

Did seem a bit excessive, to continue halfway round setting fastest times with red flags!

Other than that, I’m hoping for a more exciting race this weekend!

    16. Red Bull “one, two”……anyone?I’m going for Webbo on a home poll position.I expect Alonso or Seb to ruin his party though.

      26th March 2010, 22:04

      First time I’ve given this a crack… Don’t know why I haven’t before, though!

Honestly have no idea about who really has pace this weekend based on two very disrupted sessions – but I have to have faith in the Red Bull after Seb’s showing in Bahrain. Now McLaren appear to have some more raw pace this weekend, not to mention Mercedes as well. And, of course, you just know Ferrari will be right up there…
AHH! It’s all too hard for me to figure out!

    18. keith,
care to publish your predictions? or is that not ok? have i asked that before?

      3 hours 20 mins until practice 3 & I can’t enter?

        26th March 2010, 23:46

        Ignore that, refresh worked!

    20. I think Vettel will take poll and Webber will be close. Vettel won’t win, the Ferrari’s race pace is too consistent. I think Alonso will win it, Vettel second, third will be Webber because of his fast car and the home advantage, 4th will be Hamilton, he’s close but not close enough and 5th will be Massa, who will experience some problems during the race and he will loe his cool.

      1. “third will be Webber because of his fast car and the home advantage”

His career best in his home GP is 5th I think. I just don’t think that racing in Oz is to his advantage. I might be guessing but I’m thinking that the pressure and expectations of being at home might be to his disadvantage.

Does anyone else think that Kubica has a pretty good shot at pole position?

Perhaps it sounds far fetched but I think the Renault cars are starting to “come round”.

    22. Keith,

The “software didnt work for me. Here my predictions:

      Webber
      webber
      Vettel
      Alonso
      Hamilton
      Massa

      Becken

    23. Oh i am so lazy I missed out on this predictions.

    24. Im not able allways to make my predictions at what time should i do iT?

    25. I’m seeing Bahrain predictions here… anyone else or is it just my cache or something??

    26. Keith I’m so sorry you feel my comment has to be eliminated,
I think you have been strict; at the end, my stats were made after so many people had posted their predictionsa, and you know most of the people made his predictions bases on who is your preferred driver not based on who driver has more opportunities.

Anyway, i’m so sorry you had put my comment on awaiting moderation, was not my intention Keith, never I thought I was putting your site in a compromise.

      1. IDR – Sorry to do that but the predictions were still open and in the interests of having a fair competition those who predict later shouldn’t have the benefit of knowing how others have voted.

    27. I counted the predictions and got some statistics:

      Pole Perc Number
      VET 34% 425
      HAM 32% 395
      ALO 11% 141
      WEB 10% 127
      MAS 7% 87

Most people predicted Vettel on pole. Hamilton just got it all wrong.

      P1 Perc Number
      HAM 31% 379
      VET 29% 359
      ALO 20% 247
      WEB 8% 104
      MAS 7% 81

I guess we can bin the predictions for P1 too with Hamilton starting from P11. Although you never know with a safetycar things could change. Or maybe lightning will strike and Hamilton will actually overtake a lot of cars :)

Instead of doing all positions seperately I gave the predictions F1 style scores and added all those up. For instance a prediction with HAM to finish on P1 and ALO on P2 would give HAM 25 points and ALO 18 points.

The resulting top 5 scores from 1241 predictions are:
      Driver Score
      HAM 19678
      ALO 19641
      VET 18874
      MAS 12612
      WEB 10206

    28. i got two right in vettel pole and massa third..thats pretty good enough..

    29. weres the leader bord?
