Just 40 players out of 2,200 picked Button to win in Melbourne

J-Canada edged into a narrow, three-point lead over Arpi_ in the Predictions’ Championship.

But Gaz was the highest scorer in the second round of the competition and wins a copy of “The Lotus Story” four-disc DVD box set.

There was a five-way tie for second place in the Australian Grand Prix predictions between Giuliano Vilela, Dean Costello, mkt, Dave Monks and David Livingstone. The runner-up prize goes to mkt on a tie-breaker as they were the closest with the rest of their predictions.

Mkt wins a 40x35cm print of Button on his way to victory in Sunday’s race.

The second round of the championship saw much lower scores. Gaz won this round with 19 points whereas J-Canada scored 48 at Bahrain. Gaz didn’t score in the first round and his 19 points puts him 64th overall.

Only 40 people picked Jenson Button to win and just six picked Robert Kubica for second. No-one got both the first and second-placed finishers correct, and 359 cursed when Sebastian Vettel spun out, having picked him to win…

See below for the full standings for over 2,200 players.

Predictions for the Malaysian round will be open soon. When they are open it will be announced in the daily round-up and there will be a reminder on the website on Friday.

The prizes

This year we’re giving away a pair of prizes every race weekend.

On top of that at the end of the year the top 12 finishers all get prizes – and whoever scores the highest overall will be going to the 2011 British Grand Prix. Here are the prizes in full:

Grand prize: Two grandstands tickets to the 2011 British Grand Prix

The person who scores the most points in the 2010 F1 Fanatic Predictions Championship will win grandstand tickets to the 2011 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

This is the first time we’ve offered F1 race tickets as a prize at F1 Fanatic and I hope you all agree it’s a fitting reward for the F1 expert who can best predict who will be on top in 2010.

The grand prize winner will receive tickets to all three days of the 2011 British Grand Prix with reserved grandstand seating for the race.

Second place prize: An F1 painting of your choice

The second place finisher in the championship will win an F1 painting by Rob Ijbema.

You get to choose which F1 driver, present or past, will feature in the painting. Or you can pick one of the other motor racing paintings on Rob’s site Car-a-day.

Runners-up prizes: Autocourse 2010-2011

The ten players who finish in third to 12th positions in the championship will win a copy of the 2010-2011 edition of Autocourse.

The highly respected journal of Formula 1 and other major international four-wheeled racing series is published at the end of every season.

This year the publication marks its 60th anniversary edition.

Race winners prize: The Lotus Story DVD Box Set

Duke Video are supplying the prize for the player who gets the highest score in each round.

With the Lotus name returning to F1 in 2010 what better prize than a DVD box set showing the history of this great team. This four-disc set “The Lotus Story” chronicles Lotus’s participation in F1 from the company’s beginning in 1948 up to its F1 withdrawal in 1994.

Duke are also offering a special promotion exclusive to all F1 Fanatic readers – whenever you order from them you can get 15% off using the promotional code F1Fanatic at the checkout.

Race runners-up prize: F1 race winner print

The second place finisher in each race will win a 40x35cm print of the race winner from Motorsport in Print.

How to enter

Entries will open in the week before every race. You have until the start of free practice three on Saturday to make your predictions. A reminder will be posted on the site after free practice two on Friday.

  1. Ha! I’ve been one of the top scorers in Australia with 9pts.
Too bad the new scoring system only awards predicting drivers on their correct positions, and that to an extent that makes eveyrthing else irrelevant.

    1. I was very lucky scored 10 points im in 15th pos

  2. when will the next race be avaliable to predict, I dont go by practices, I go by gut instinct, although waitng for practices may have helped with kubica

        1. Or Formula One fanatic aardvarks!

  4. Not a great result, but i jumped from 1200+ to 330 position!

I did want to put Button higher in there, but i changed my mind and put him a little lower.

    1. joined you on 330 with a measley 11 points lol 1 scored 7 and 4 points i aint nothing if not consistent :)

      1. Same here. Bit miffed really

  5. 2 POINTS!!!!…. almost 20 years of watching F1 and i get two measly points….

well to be fair, i don’t remember my choices LOL….

this is a cool game and being ranked 82X out of 2200 is what i call steady progress…

  6. Willian and Co. you’re next

  7. I lost 13 points in the first round because my entry did not make it. I will have to fight my way up through the entire field :-)

You will see plenty of overtaking 8)

    1. I expect to have a triple diffuser for the next round, so you won’t be overtaking me!

  8. Sorry to be having a thick moment here but does anyone remember what the key combination was to be able to search for your own results? Sorry but with over 2000 people I am far too lazy to search for my own :P

    1. read the comments steph :D

to find your name easily press Ctrl+F and type in your name in the box.

      1. Thanks soirry on my mobile must have missed it :P Thanks very much! :)

  9. I’m surprised I managed 4 pts, must do better.

  10. For Mac users: cmf+F, not ctrl+F

    1. sorry, I meant cmd+F

  11. looks like this weas a way more unpredictable race.
Btw cool prizes. In my country there is also F1 predictions, but each GP winner gets nuts ( all nuts together costs about 40 pounds) :D

    1. Nuts magazine or like peanuts?

    2. Really? That’s hilarious. Not very fair on people who are allergic!

    3. Are you from Latvia?

      1. Yeah, and BTW i just looked, they are not sponsoring Latvia’s F1 page, so i actually dont know are there any prizes now :D

  12. Im 2211th now :D Ill be predicting next GP :)

  13. Great work Keith…. Must be a big job sorting out so many predictions…

Whether the race is interesting or not, this prediction game is real fun!

I didn’t score much… My total stands at 9 points. Have to try harder (think harder) next time.

    1. I assume Keith has some automatic program to sort out the results. Don’t you, Keith?

      Rank 491, bad!!

Tip for next round: Put Vettel for pole. Don’t put either of Nico and Michael in top 5.

      1. But Nico ends up coming 5th..!!

      2. Tip: Put Vettel on pole, but not in the top 5!

  14. Is there anyway to see just a table of this round of results? I picked Button and want to see how close I came to the top. Cheers.

    1. Not worry, I copied it into Excel and sorted by Mel column. Joint 9th! Woohoo!

  15. YEAH, I’m joint 1698th.

Already up on last year and it’s a long season.

  16. Still 4th! Good stuff :)

  17. 720th! Never thought I’d know what it feels like to be Schumacher :) (joke)

Just to mention when I browse the predictions I made for Melbourne it actually shows the ones from Bahrain, although I trust it’s not used to calculate the scores.

  18. yes yes yes…….

    all good fun

  19. That’s twice that Vettel has cost me. Next time I’ll pick him for pole but not the win.

  20. I was very unlucky with my prediction this time. I got Vettel’s pole right, but here was my top 5 prediction: BUT, VET, ALO, MAS, MSC. Of my five drivers, in four cases their team mate finished in the respective position. I could have won the round :@

  21. there’s a lot of ppl who scored well in the first GP but 0 in the 2nd…i wonder if its because they forgot or just had a horrible prediction. i see about a third of the ppl here now making no further predictions or missing more than half of them.

  22. Hi Keith,

Despite having used the same e-mail address in the two races, I realized that I used in Bahrain my name and surname and in Melbourne and I used only the name. Could you join the results of Nelson and Nelson Correa in one as both were written with the same e-mail address?

    Thanks a lot.

    Cheers,
    Nelson Correa

    1. No, sorry, you’ll have to make sure you use the correct name in future.

      1. I guess you do it for one, you get stuck having to bend the rules for everyone?

  23. Second time that I put Vettel for a win. I hate that Red Bull car!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Of course, you know what’ll happen if you predict someone else to win next time…

      1. Flying Wombat
        30th March 2010, 18:14

Well, I’ve been predicting Trulli to win the last two races. I’m pretty sure I’ll be ok to back someone else… ;-)

        1. Go on, do it, I bet he wins now…

(Still the one guy trying to get 0 points will s*** bricks)

  24. Am considering adding a new rule that anyone commenting on their lack of success in the Predictions Championship must do so using only FIA-approved press conference terminology, e.g.:

    “For sure”
    “Fantastic job”
    “The guys”

    Etc…

    1. to be honest, I really think that would improve the show..

    2. Great site,
As far as the championship is concerned, we are doing our maximum, trying to score valuable points. The championship is very long. I have to thank everybody in the team for doing their maximum and bla, bla, bla.
P.S. Sorry for not pitching in with anything else. By the way “loved Bahrain”.

      1. …and you get a bonus point for picking a username based on one of my favourite drivers!

  25. Feeling smug on equal 46th ^^

But the top guys have way more points, like double mine,
also i’m confused, has Keith changed the scoring system as some comments have suggested? or is it just coincidence that the scores are lower?

    1. Not a change, not a coincidence – it was an unusual race and many people expected Red Bull on top, Alonso to beat Massa, Button not to win, Kubica not to be in top 5, Hamilton to be there…

      1. Ahh that’s ok then, It’s the first post that confused me actually.

  26. I’m rank 154 but it could have been better for sure. I think I did a fantastic job and the guys are charged up for Malaysia.
Next time I’m choosing Alonso because he brings 0.6 secs and Lewis because he brings 3 degrees of downforce. Can’t go wrong with that. For sure.

    1. Even got 2 for sures in there, my god, If only I could Predict the Prediction Champion!

  27. 154th place. I was 112th before, but 154th is still good.

  28. There are 2000 people who can lead after round 3!

  29. At least I saved 24th place :)

  30. Y’know the team really worked on a good plan for these predictions and I think I’m satisfied with the results. We’re looking forward to Malaysia, though, and already pushing and maybe some of the keyboard developments will help us. I’m proud of the guys, they did a good job.

  31. 12th place, much better from what I expected. I think the Vettel pole saved me.

    Good luck for Malaysia!

Could you consider putting the results in alphbetical order so that it is easier to find your standing?
    Cheers

    1. ctrl+f and type your name

      or cmd+f for mac

  33. I geuss 275 out of 2200 is alright. But I’m glad I was one of only six that put Kubica as second! :D

  34. after a DNF in Bahrain,
    Im now halfway the grid

    30th March 2010, 20:00

You and me both Polishboy! I had KUB in second. He ran well!
That was just about the only thing that I did right!

    1. Thats the only one I got too.

  36. I may be joint 823, but there is quite a lot of bias in my choices :)

Massa to get pole and race victory every race :D

  37. 132. I was around that number after bahrain and i was annoyed, i still am. Im never happy unless i am top/winning. Im way to competitive i think :(

  38. Keith,
I was just wondering..I used different names for the Bahrain and Melbourne predictions but i used the same e-mail address. They’re now under different names in the standings so I was wondering if it’s possible to put them together? I figured it’d let me reach 566th place in the standings :D

    1. No, sorry.

Crap, I missed this race predicions. Can’t miss anymore.

    1. Regarding missing them, I’m going away for the weekend, and I won’t have access to the interwebs, Any idea when the Malaysia predictions will open?

And is it possible, if I can’t make that, to say, send an email, or post them to the site in the comments instead?

      1. 8. Predictions must be entered using the form or e-mailled to competition@f1fanatic.co.uk

  40. 566.. As far the race pace(points) i am not that far away..But with regular upgrades and updates i must be on my way to middle of the pack :p

  41. Keith, I thought I would have scored more points with my prediction?

    Pole Mark Webber

    Position 1 Fernando Alonso
    Position 2 Mark Webber
    Position 3 Felipe Massa
    Position 4 Sebastian Vettel
    Position 5 Nico Rosberg

    1. That prediction would score nine points but your user name and email address matches to the following prediction:

      Pole: Mark Webber

      P1: Mark Webber
      P2: Sebastian Vettel
      P3: Fernando Alonso
      P4: Lewis Hamilton
      P5: Nico Rosberg

  42. Well, 3 points for picking the race winner… good job me :D

  43. The Malaysian Grand Prix predictions round is now open for those who want to get their picks in early. As ever you have until the start of free practice three on Saturday morning to make your predictions.

For the first time players are now invited to predict the pole position time. This prediction does not earn any extra points but it is used as a tie-breaker when needed.

  44. 823rd with just two rounds gone,it’s tough work as both the time I predicted Vettel to win but it didn’t happened.
