Lewis Hamilton was the fastest driver in the first practice session in Turkey, setting setting a lap almost a second quicker than team mate Jenson Button.
The two Mercedes were behind them, followed by Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull.
Red Bull and Force India both ran their version of the F-duct for the first time in 2010.
Onboard cameras suggest Red Bull have a hand-operated device which Vettel tested while Mark Webber drove the standard version of the car.
Adrian Sutil, however, suffered a high-speed crash in his Force India at turn eight three minutes before the chequered flag came out.
The VJM03 speared off the track as he approached the exit of turn eight, making it all the way across the run-off and into the barrier. Sutil was fortunately uninjured.
The first half of the session saw little running as the little-used track was very dusty.
Karun Chandhok had a disrupted sessionafter suffering an electrical problem early on. The marshals waved white flags as the HRT crawled into the pits.
After spending much of the session in the garage he finally made it out 15 minutes from the end of practice to set a time.
Alongside him in the other HRT for this session was reserve driver Sakon Yamamoto, making his first appearance for the Spanish team. Bruno Senna will be back in the car in the second session.

HRT haven’t actually improved surely, so what is wrong with Virgin?

I an interview Kolles said, that he now wants to have drivers with experience of other F1 cars giving their opinions, to learn more about the car.
He did do the same with Force India, so maybe he does not really mind if the driver is not fast. And the money helps as well to pay for the effort.

he said he had understeer and went off into the marbles, which then put him into the barriers.

I know I keep saying it but here is another example a mystery easily solved by an onboard camera. Same with Hulkenberg in Monaco and Kobayashi in Melbourne. Come on FOM, this is the 21st century.

I saw a picture of Hulkenberg’s car at the hairpin in Monaco and his front wing was busted, thus justifing his understeer and crash into the tunnel.

Hmmm..too early to draw any conclusion but it looks like mclaren will be performing better than monaco…any onboard shots of the ferrari to suggest if its hand operated ??
wow!! Chandhok quicker than the Virgins..that maybe down to their worn out tyres compared to his fresh ones towards the end of the session …

On the inside of the exit @ turn 8 is a “gutter” type bump. If the driver goes in too tight, he will ramp over it. Generally its okay to do if the driver does it without turning, but if the driver turns while going over the bump, the rear would slide out and its extremely hard to regain control, even in lower formulas.

I think Red Bull and Ferrari hide their lights under a bushel until qualifying, so I shan’t take these times too seriously yet. Hope they are “real” but don’t think so.

Has anybody run it first up?
I wonder with RBR always taking it easy Fri how easy or hard it would be to make the call for Sat when they are looking against the rest of the field?
Would it be raceability and speed down the straight vs losing a tenth in qualifying if they haven’t tuned it?
Somehow I doubt they will run it first up.

Vettel’s trap times are pretty good if they have the engine turned down more than their opposition as appears normal for RBR on a Friday.
