The track

The Canadian Grand Prix moved to the temporary circuit in the Ile Notre Dame in 1978 and has stayed there ever since. The track was re-named after local hero Gilles Villeneuve following his death in 1982.

With long straights and several slow corners, Montreal is tough on engines and very tough on brakes.

Hemmed in by concrete barriers in several places, there is little room for error and few spaces for the marshals to gain access to the track, both of which increase the chance of the safety car making an appearance.

Having been left off the calendar last year, the popular venue is making a welcome return in 2010.

2008 Canadian Grand Prix highlights

Lewis Hamilton started the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix from pole position and looked on course to repeat his win from the previous season. But it all went wrong when the field pitted en masse behind the safety car.

Hamilton failed to see the red light at the pit lane exit and he crashed into Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari, putting both out of the race.

That opened the way for Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld to lead BMW to a historic maiden one-two finish.

  1. Looking at that picture, it’s strange how things have changed in two years. Button’s gone from being in the worst car to one of the best, with the #1 on it! The #1 at the time however isn’t even in F1 anymore.

    1. Furthering on that:

      – Look where Button is.
      – Look how many cars in the picture have withdrawn from F1.
      – Oh how Red Bull have risen.

Sorry but that is Rubens. Button qualified in 19th place and isnt even in the picture!

        1. lol the stig :L

    2. The cars looked so beautiful back then!! Especially the BMW and Mclaren, truly awesome liveries!!

Only thing wrong with that picture are the grooved tyres. Slicks look much better.

I remember seeing a pic of a Mclaren with slick tyres, 2008-spec rear wing and a giant 2009-spec front wing during the pre-season testing of 2009. That was without doubt the most sensational looking car ever!! I will try to dig up a pic!!

        1. I have to agree. Fantastic picture. Would like to have seen it running, any video clips?

      1. I hated the cars of the last few years of the old rules. Bits sticking out everywhere. If the first release shot of the 2009 spec cars hadn’t been the monstrously ugly BMW and Renault, I don’t think the reception would have been so bad. Personally I found last year’s McLaren and Williams to be things of beauty (and the Ferrari, before those stupid outboard mirrors).

  2. Weather will play a big role…days of thunder are coming:)

Is it me or do those cars look like childrens toys with all those bits sticking out of them.

That Honda looks like there’s a laser cannon in the airbox.

      1. Stormy weather is on the map,an tracking a sure hit Sat/Sunday

Looking at 2008 Webber damaged his car in Q2 so couldnt compete in Q3 and Vettel damaged his car in practice 3 so couldnt compete in qualifying. Maybe its not only the redbull car that is perhaps at a disadvantage around Canada.

  4. Does anyone know whether it’ll be on FOX or SPEED here in the US? I’ve been scouring the net for info and keep getting conflicting information :/

    1. …it’ll be on FOX.

      1. Thanks LH! (comment lengthened)

  5. gee, i loved those old cars, they looked agressive, naturally fast and very modern.

  6. Look like Sunday morning will be wet in Montreal…
