Romain Grosjean will return to single-seater racing this weekend as he will contest the Auto GP round at Spa.

Formerly known as Euroseries 3000, an earlier incarnation of the championship was won by Felipe Massa in 2001, the year before he made his F1 debut.

The Auto GP series uses chassis based on those used by A1 Grand Prix from 2005-2008.

Grosjean was dropped by Renault after seven appearances for the team in the second half of last year. This year he has been driving a Matech-run Ford GT in the new GT1 World Championship and at the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Grosjean said:

I am really looking forward to be back in a single-seater car. It is a great experience I will live with the DAMS team and I am sure that it will be very productive for both of us. Spa-Francorchamps is a beautiful circuit and it is always something special racing there with a powerful and competitive car.

He raced at Spa last year but crashed out at Les Combes on the first lap.

is he still racing in the GT1’s?

    1. Yes, he’s doing quite well in a Ford GT.

  2. Anyone curious to see the sort of talent he’ll be up against should watch this video:

    1. With what Petrov did at the start at Montreal last week, a similar crash could happen quite easily in F1.

    2. They added a more prolongated shark fin to the A1GP cars, but the cars are pretty robust, only wings and noses smashed up in the crash.

The DAMS car looks like a HRT with McLaren logo on the side.

  3. If Grosjean really wants to get back to F1 like he keeps mentioning, he needs to get back into GP2 for 2011, and try and follow in the footsteps of Glock.

  4. Well he said he is staying with DAMS. Seeing as DAMS are the Renault Junior Team in GP2 (so to speak), maybe that means that he isn’t completely off of Renault’s radar.

  5. Maybe Renault will be willing to give him a second chance in the future. DAMS in AutoGP might be a teaser to get a GP2 seat with them for next year.

  6. Can anyone shed some light on what happened to the A1 GP series?

    1. bankrupt.
      failing to pay bills.
      failing to honour contracts.
Pulling out of events 4 days (yes, DAYS) before they were meant to start.

Basically it was run by a joker. I hope the Queensland Government get their aact together and sue Texeira for all he’s worth, what he did to them was hugely unprofessional. It was through luck and huge last minute improvisation that Surfers got any event at all last year.

  7. Grosjean was given a raw deal, he didn’t set any records, but he had, what, half a year?

  8. I think Grosjean definitely deserves another shot if F1

  9. sorry not if, at
