Michael Schumacher apologised for spoiling Lewis Hamilton’s lap at the end of second practice this morning.
Schumacher said:
Regarding Lewis, I must apologise as I did not see him and was not informed that he was there. As I was planning my lap at that moment and looking ahead, I was unfortunately in his way.
Michael Schumacher
Hamilton described it as a “small misunderstanding”, saying:
It’s always difficult to find a gap out there. I saw him ahead of me and I thought he was on a quick lap – then, all of a sudden, he slowed down to create a gap from the guy in front.
Around here, it’s all about managing the gap between the guy in front and the guy behind. Fortunately, I missed him, so no hard feelings – and I hear he apologised anyway, so it’s all good. There’s no problem.
Lewis Hamilton
Hamilton caught Schumacher at the final turn and had to swerve left to avoid hitting the W01. Schumacher had slowed having caught another car at the end of his lap.
At the end of his first day driving on the Valencia Street Circuit Schumacher feels he can go quicker around the track:
It was exciting to drive the track for the first time today, probably even to a bigger extent than I had anticipated yesterday after checking it. So this morning for me was mostly about getting a feeling for the track. You need to get used to it but I found it quite comfortable to drive even if some of the corners are blind. However it’s demanding to get the real rhythm which I have not totally found over one lap yet.

Surprising to hear Schumi apologise first, especially as he didn’t seem to do anything wrong as far as I could see.

What’s surprising is the fact that Schumacher apologized for something in the first place, he never apologizes for anything he does to another driver… What’s next, him becoming a mobile chicane?

Maybe after getting down on all those who critisized him for his Canada driving he felt it would be a good move to apologize for something, this way he can point out he is fair!
But your right on this being pretty much out of character for Schumi.

“…[A]nd I hear he apologised anyway” – so the apology wasn’t direct but only via the media?

Well, now he is on a roll….
Now apologise for Adelaide 94, Jerez 97, and what about Monaco 06 while you are at it.
-edit-
HOLY CRAP!!! A pig has just fell through the roof of my house!! Perhaps he can apologise for that as well! :)

He needs to apologize for Austria 01 and 02, and also Indy 05 as well… ;)

The Austrias were team orders, not Schumacher’s. Emphasis on team. ;)
And for Indy 05, you should clearly be asking Michelin for an apology. Nothing Schumacher could have done about a French company’s faulty tyres. ;)

Schumacher could have told the team no, it was pretty obvious what happened, and Indy 05 was michelin fault but Ferrari could have agreed to make changes like every other team did.

It’s a shame the quotes didn’t work, but I agree that Schumacher wasn’t to blame at all for either.
