It’s the final day of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Lewis Hamilton, Heikki Kovalainen and hill record holder Nick Heidfeld are among those expected to turn up.

Coulthard’s comments are anti-racing (Doctorvee)

“David Coulthard had the advantage of always racing for ‘fast’ teams in F1. His F1 career began at Williams when the team was reaching the height of its mid-1990s dominance. When he moved to McLaren, they were never terribly far off the pace. Even when he raced for Red Bull, they weren’t exactly backmarkers. Maybe if he had done a stint with a smaller, less well-resourced team, he would have a bit more sympathy for the tailenders that are every bit as important to F1 as the front runners.”

Joe has an explanation for why some of the McLarens at Goodwood have their authentic liveries and others don’t:

The MP4/2C was brought by McLaren, and Ron being Ron had all ‘Marlboro’ decals removed when West took over (in 1997). The MP4/8 is privately owned and is in it’s correct livery from Monaco, where this particular chassis (#6) claimed Senna’s 6th and last win there.

On this day in F1

Mercedes made their crushingly dominant return to Grand Prix racing – and first appearance in the world championship – on this day in 1954.

Juan Manuel Fangio and Karl Kling qualified their W196s (an example of which is at Goodwood this weekend) in the top two places for the French Grand Prix at Reims, and the pair lapped the entire field en route to a formation finish.

    I very much agree with doctorvee’s viewpoint on Coulthard. It’s beginning to grate on me quite a lot. He was getting very uptight in the post-race coverage, especially when EJ quite right pointed out that Kovy had no obligation to move over.

    This whole “B-class” thing that DC seems to be making such an issue of is putting me right off him.

      I have to agree, MouseNightshirt. While I believe that there is such a thing as being ‘too slow’ or ‘dangerously slow’, this incident was not an example of that. Trulli was ahead on merit, Mark had to overtake him. Watching the on-board replay, Mark’s closing speed in the slipstream was indeed significant, but he did not seem to anticipate what would happen when the Lotus eventually reached the braking zone. Unfortunate incident, yes – but not one where I think you can place the blame squarely on Jarno.

    2. I was a massive fan of D.C. when he was driving but I’m fed up of his “toeing the corporate line” nonsense when on the BBC regarding Red Bull. I understand that he has to do this, but it is excessive I feel. I remember when (I think it was JH) asked about how a non-manufacturer team, one which historically has made fizzy flavoured caffeineated beverages was beating established manufacturer and racing marques such as Ferrari, McLaren et al. DC then barges in, quite aggressively about how Dieter Masetchizch used to be a major shareholder in Sauber when Red Bull sponsored them. Yes, it was quite an interesting little snippet which I didn’t know, but it was conveyed during an unnecessary snipe to a fairly (I thought) reasonable question

      1. I do not see how it was a snipe, he was just informing us/Jake that Red Bull have been involved in F1 longer than we all realised, clearly.

      2. DC’s has all the symptoms of being a leeeettle bit spoilt, and not enough street. He’s a nice guy, but little bit fluffy and naive sometimes.

    3. Wasn’t the main message that DC was trying to convey that the moveable rear wings are a bad idea?

      He hasn’t ragged on the new teams much, but now he was giving this accident as an example of something that the rear wings could cause plenty of next year.

  3. Well I disagree with Doctorvee view point on Coulthard’s comments.

    Coulthard was simply pointing out the fact that Red Bull has massive top speed relative to the Lotus and possibly the ability to brake a lot later. And this condition can simply catch the drivers out. So his logic makes perfect sense.

    One can only realize this if they are a racing driver or have done some type of racing in the past. Has anyone ever raced a go-kart or super-kart here? Have you ever been out on the track with someone who is ridiculously slow? I have, and trust me, it can get pretty messy to pass the slow guys! Simply because you never know when they are going to brake and which ridiculous line they are going to take, especially if they are trying to block you at the same time.

    and to answer to this…

    Well sorry No. It is quite obvious that they are not as important as the front runners. Period.

      I’ve been racing pro-karts – passing much slower (and occasionally stupid) karters is part of the required skill, yet I manage to do it without smashing into the rear end of them or punting them off the track and can still win.

      It’s only messy if you don’t show them the respect that should be shown to all racers. Being simply faster is not enough. Webber’s problem has consistently been his overly aggressive defensive and offensive style – it lands him in trouble all over the show.

      And EVERY team is important to F1. But then racing would be so much better with only 18 cars on track though, wouldn’t it…

        Well I’ve never hit slower guys and I understand what you are getting at. But it can indeed get messy and it depends on the circumstance of what the slow driver does.

        Regards to Webber, one could equally argue that Kov himself didn’t show the respect to Webber. So your argument applies both ways and therefore is circular. And again, although every team in F1 is important true! The reality is that the tailenders are not “as” (meaning equally) important as the front runners. That is quite obvious no matter what you or anyone says, because that is the reality.

        1. But Kovy had no need to show webber respect as he was ahead and therefore had priority. I’ve also raced karts and can tell you that while I agree about how difficult slower karts can be to get past, the main reason is that you don’t trust the drivers not to do something stupid. This is obviously different from the slower F1 teams who still have enormously talented and knowledgable drivers!

            yes I agree with that. I am not completely sure what are the full comments Coulthard made but I understand what he was trying to explain. Which is that whether it be difference in speed or breaking points or whatever, you can easily get caught out by the slow cars under those conditions, especially if you are working hard to try and pass them.

    3. Well i think Doctorvee’s viewpoint makes a lot of sense, although the fact that DC is a RBR amassador and friends with Webber is a large part of the comments as well.

      Your remark about topspeed is completely wrong. First, Keith showed yesterday, that the topspeed between these cars is pretty small, actually the Lotus is faster in a straight line. Red Bull has been slower all year, but they keep up the speed in the corners and thus are faster over a complete lap.

      Secondly, i think the difference there is has more to do with their decelaration. Red Bull has massive downforce, enabliing them to brake faster and they need to brake less as they can carry more speed through the corner without flying off track.

        Didn’t see what Keith showed, but fair enough. However, yes the breaking part is probably more of an issue. Hence, overall I was simply referring to the fact that Coulthards comments were not so bad and make sense. But I must say Doctorvee has somewhat overdone it with his article and I cant say I agree with majority of his comments.

      That is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever read.

      In the end, who is more responsible for collisions? the guy in front? no, it’s the guy behind. Kovy didn’t move over into him, he braked for the corner. He’s not actually doing anything wrong there… Kovy was racing for position, even if Webber is waaay faster and Kovy’s race will only be hurt by trying to defend, Kovy has every right to defend. Period.

  8. It was interesting to see a McLaren and a Williams in the Paddock but not part of the main teams cars, although there did appear to be enough Williams mechanics on the hill to start an entire grid full of cars….
