On his way back down Goodwood Hill, Bruno Senna whipped out his phone and filmed himself in the 1993 McLaren MP4-8, driving it single-handedly! View the F1 Fanatic Goodwood Festival of Speed 2010 picture gallery

Comment of the day

Thanks to Moebius for putting my Le Mans 24 Hours history straight:

Mark Webber "flew" in a Mercedes CLR (1999), the car you poster is a CLK-LM, the 98 car, which was a derivative of the CLK-GTR.

  1. oh wow, awesome cars, great track, nice to see a couple of NZ drivers from past centuries doing well.

love the lines of those old cars.

  2. bruno senna is a nutter!

    1. Chances of Bruno driving a McLaren at Goodwood next year if Ron gets a look at this video:

      Slim?

      1. I’d say they are pretty good, as it wasnt even a McLaren owned car, but I dont think he planned to do it, it would have been a spur of the moment thing.

      2. No problem if he’s on Vodafone.

The driver in the Brabham was it? was clearly more mental, doing the Team America arm waving thing “its me its me!”.

This is the best F1 Team America hand signal I’ve ever seen! Seriously though, it must’ve been terrifying

        1. Excellent! I love Team America. I recently showed it to a friend who’d never seen it to cheer her up after one England’s lousy football performances.

          1. Yeah me too, I’ve got it on DVD. And the South Park movie (made by the same people) is even funnier

        2. That is hilarious.

  3. Just imagine if Heidfelf had had a helmet camera when he set the record for the hill. That would have been an incredible video.

  4. that’s so exciting to see all those crazy cars together at the start of the hill.. it’s like wacky racers. Love it!! :)

These guys do almost the same thing: http://euroboss.com/

  5. Nice work Senna, it looks like good number of people attended in the festival. I think many countries should organize this type of event which will bring spectators more close to motor racing.

    1. I think it is no longer a good number. It was much nicer to attend in the early days. It is great to see it thrive but each year im sure they are selling too many tickets.

    2. Looks like the drivers are enjoying this as much as the visitors!
Nice on board footage from Senna, a bit nutcase to drive it through the Haybales with only one hand, but they are all used to doing all sorts of things during racing anyhow.

  6. Was that Jackie Stewart being all crazy for the camera at 24secs?

    1. He was doing the Team America secret hand signal…

      1. That was funny.

    2. No it was his son.

  7. I dont think what Bruno has done there is so smart.

Which do you think is a more dangerous example to set to F1 fans:

    a) spinning the wheels in a road car
    b) filming yourself driving one-handed with a mobile phone in an F1 car

I’m sorry, but I think thats pretty irresponsible and if FIA is serious about F1 drivers setting a good example then I will be expecting them to have something to say, even if it is only a slap on the wrist.

Obviously Lewis was on a public road and Bruno was at a private event, but nobody would’ve known about the wheelspin if the Victoria police weren’t right outside the gate. Bruno has clearly published this on YouTube himself!

Not sure I’d be too happy as the owner of the car either, he wasnt exactly sticking to the centre of the road! I imagine that car’s worth a quid or two.

Apologies for sounding like an old grump, it’s Monday. I can understand wanting to capture the moment, but seriously, how much can a helmet cam cost?

    1. Answer is A.
One is against the law & one isnt

      1. Just because the cops can’t have a word about it doesn’t mean it wasn’t the wrong thing to do. (wow, triple negative sentence)

When it comes to setting an example legality doesn’t really come into it, if anything it means the opposite. Laws absolve you from making a moral decision for yourself. (But thats a whole other discussion about morality vs the law vs religion, let’s not go there)

        1. Im sorry but this is what the festival of speed is all about. Bringing people closer. Riding back down the hill with Bruno in his Uncles Monaco winning car is amazing. So I am afraid you are sounding like an old grump.

There are drivers at Goodwood pulling donuts, wheelies, slides on to the grass, full speed 360 spins (stunning skill by the renault 5) People have more intelligence then to think they have all set an example and go and copy it. Festival of speed puts on a great show and allows drivers to do things in a relaxed atmosphere they perhaps dont usually get to do. I hope people like you dont get near spoiling it!!

          1. It really does reek of nostalgia, seeing the cars and the people so close to the action.. If it got all health and safety, I think I’d be afraid for my sanity. This is what the sport is about.. it’s exciting. I totally agree.

    2. If you have a helmet cam you have to turn your head to film spectators and so on, with your phone in your hand you don’t have to.

It’s seems more comfortable to me ;)

      1. This doesn’t even compare to Lewis. at all.

Lewis is a racing driver, for him to break road rules is quite bad, considering in the same weekend they had stickers “make roads safe” on the cars.

What Bruno did had potential for danger, but it isn’t a public road is it?

    3. People should take responsibility for themselves. If someone is caught filming themselves driving then that’s their fault, and to say “well, Bruno Senna did it at Goodwood” would be a pathetic cop out.

There’s too much emphasis these days on people in the public eye having to live the lives of saints for fear of idiots copying them. If someone wants to do something stupid or illegal and gets caught, then how about they hold their hands up and take responsibility for it. Not pass the buck on to someone famous.

  8. ….Bah humbug!!

    1. was @gDog! :D ‘Bah Humbug’ was too short so I had to add some unnecessary punctuation.. :P

      1. I did say it was a Monday! And it still is. Humbug!

Even if I don’t think it was the smartest thing to do by using a mobile phone, I’ve gotta say it’s pretty cool to get a “behind the scenes” of the cars lining up on the hill.

        Love the 6 wheel Tyrrell.

        1. Huray! The fan in you wins over!! Happy days :)

  9. Cool, my forum topic got a mention.

  10. Surprised the new F1 race edit didnt get a mention. Shows new footage of Buttons pass on Webber and Webber looking like he was tapped wide by one of the williams cars allowing them past. http://www.formula1.com/video/race_edits.html

    1. Possibly because it was rubbish, no juicy Alonso radio, fleeting showing of Koba’s passes, monotanous music, I mean say what you like about the Canada music at least it kept your attention.

To best bits, Horners face when Hamilton touched Vettle, an like you said, Webbers little adventure explained, otherwise meh.

Race edits not as good as last year by half.

      1. Actually the Bahrain one was pretty good (finally showing us all the passing) and Turkey added something as well. Canada was nice.

But this really sucks, not much new footage, at least 3 times Lewis GF, as you said, the faces at RBR with Vettel being touched and with Webber taking off. Is it possible the music is chosen by the GP winner?

  11. I think well all owe Bruno Senna a drink!

  12. Does anyone knows the one and only f1 driver who started the race illegaly?

    1. Hans Heyer in the 1977 German Grand Prix at the Hockenheimring. Why?

    2. there’s a trivia quiz for this sort of thing.

    3. I had to look that up, that’s genius. He just decided to pull out of the pit lane and go racing after he failed to qualify for the race. Only did 9 laps. But the stewards didn’t notice, and only DQ’d him afterwards. An illegal 25th car! :)

Maybe Ferrari can sneak their 3rd car in in the same manner.. hide it under, I dunno, a big fake shoe box, and bring it out moments before the start with Rossi in it. Then deny all knowledge!

  13. Any chances of Goodwood Festival doing an European tour? :D

    1. Weal, you’d have to find a decent hill.

  14. The noise…Sitting so far forward in the car…Video glitches…Its 90s onboard all over again! Bliss :)

  15. Thanks for the vintage 1970 clip ! please lets have more.
I love the track. This is what the new Texas GP track should look like.

  16. Didn’t expect that onboard footage to put a grin that size on my face, but it did. The noise! Mamma!
1970 French GP: love the look of the Clermont Ferrand track. Utterly impossible these days, racing on a skanky bit of tarmac like that (well, perhaps not) but combined with those little go-carts sliding every corner it looked classic.
