Hulkenberg penalty puts Massa eighth

Felipe Massa has been promoted to eighth in the final classification for the Singapore Grand Prix having finished tenth on the road.

He has moved up two places after Nico Hulkenberg and Adrian Sutil were both given 20-second time penalties for going off the track and gaining an advantage.

Hulkenberg’s penalty means Sutil is now classified ninth. That puts Sutil back ahead of Michael Schumacher in the drivers’ championship and Force India ahead of Williams in the constructors’ championship.

    1. Ridiculous. Just give Massa a 20 seconds penalty and we’re back to square one!

    2. Its very disappointing they couldn’t sort this out during the race.

      1. Massa will agree with that – he’d have loved to have those two out of his way.

        1. Not necessarily, because all that was needed was to redress the illegal moves – as Webber had to do in 2009 at Singapore.

    3. Yeah this is going too far. Did anyone who watched the race even notice these two incidents? And i’m quite sure Sutil and Hulkenberg didn’t have the two fastest laps almost 20 seconds faster than the rest.

      1. “Did anyone who watched the race even notice these two incidents?”
        I did.
“And i’m quite sure Sutil and Hulkenberg didn’t have the two fastest laps almost 20 seconds faster than the rest.”
So? Hulkenberg’s “mistakes” didn’t make him faster in Monza, but it helped him to keep Webber behind.

The stewards didn’t seem to think so and there was nothing in his lap times to suggest otherwise.

Ah, steward didn’t seem to think so… Cool, cool.
“there was nothing in his lap times to suggest otherwise”
You can’t suggest something using lap times. His lap time doesn’t matter. But when Webber could overtake him, Hulkenberg made mistake. Several mistakes…

At no time was Webber alongside Hülkenberg going into the chicane when Hülkenberg then went across the chicane and stayed ahead. There was one occasion when Webber had already tucked in behind Hülkenberg and then Hülkenberg made a mistake.

Scoff at the stewards all you like, that is why he didn’t get a penalty and they were right.

    4. Great. At this rate Massa will win :D Only kidding! I think these penalities are far too late. Why didn’t they just sort it in the race?

      1. I was wondering about that as well. Sutil was penalized for an off on the first lap after the race, thats rediculous.

And Hülkenberg was only penalized after FI protested his move when they got dropped behind him because of Sutils penalty.

        1. I wonder if Williams had first asked them to investigate Sutil, seeing a chance to get ahead, maybe. That would make this sort of poetic justice:

Hi Williams, there you go, thanks for notifying the stewards of this insignificant transgression we will have to act on. Oh, by the way, when we looked, you also did it, so here is a penalty for you too, for your trouble – ‘k,thanks, bye, The Stewards.

    5. With these late penalties, it wouldn’t surprise me to see a Webber pen. Even though I don’t want that – now with Lewis seemingly out of it Webber has my full backin until the new season!

      1. Webber/Hamilton incident was decided during the race already, and announced – that was relatively quick.

    6. A track drawed with kerbs fixed on the tarmac, run off areas you run faster than track itself, overruled races…
      That’s the results.

Bring back the grass around the tracks, put punishing kerbs (Singapore chicane is so ridicolous…!), fill in with sand slow corners external run off areas.

No more 20 seconds punishment there!!!

    7. Imagine something like this happens at a crucial round of the season and somebody becomes world champion hours after the race!

      1. with the guy in front being penalized for a lap 1 off as well!

    8. Just had a look back at the footage. You can juuuust see them in the background. Very minor. I wonder if anyone would have really cared if they’d have left it.

      1. What i saw was more racing bashing each other trying to get into the turns. Sutil came out as the loser as he was forced out! I wonder if Ferarri has todo something because this is something after the race reported.

    9. As Hamilton retired yet again, I feel he cannot win the title and the other two are too far away (i.e. it’s now Webber or Alonso). This is my personal opinion and if correct, I would love to see Mark Webber as champion :D

I am British so I have no nationality – based preference between these two (and I have nothing against spanish people, but Alonso has already won 2).

Unless Alonso wins the WDC by 8 or more points, everyone will look at the Germany “2-1” (the wrong guy won) and the non-Ferrari fans will protest in anger.

      1. Unless Alonso wins the WDC by 8 or more points, everyone will look at the Germany “2-1″ (the wrong guy won) and the non-Ferrari fans will protest in anger.

…which will make Germany 2010 hugely different than Austria 2002. Austria had zero effect on anything since Schumacher finished that year with double the points of Barrichello, who was his nearest rival.

        1. I’m not sure whether by saying that you mean it would make Germany 2010 worse than Austria 2002 or better.

Whichever, I think a situation where the world championship is decided by a fixed race can only be damaging for Formula 1. If Alonso wins the title, I hope it’s by eight points or more.

    10. Yeah this is ridiculous. No more after-race penalties please! How long does it take to make a decision? It’s not a complicated case here! I can imagine harder decisions take more time, like with Alonso and Kubica, where Alonso made an illegal move on him by cutting the chicane. One can debate about that. But this is just ridiculous! Also the punishment is way too harsch! As someone pointed out, Sutil and Hülkenberg were not 20 seconds faster than Massa or anyone. It’s disproportionate and way too late. Also, again a Ferrari benefits. I’m not a conspiracytheorist but it’s definetly throwing oil on the “The FIA helps Ferrari”-fire there.

    11. Remarkable that this could not have been dealt with during a 2 hour race.

    12. It could be said that the hulk deserved a penalty after monza so maybe the stewards had previous behaviour in mind lol :D

      1. Or with hindsight, they did feel giving Sutil that penalty before was too harsh (or did they just want to give Ferrari another point or two?).

    13. If Petrov wasn’t lapped, he would be 9th now.
