Narain Karthikeyan, Williams, 2006

Former F1 driver Narain Karthikeyan claims he will make a comeback with HRT in 2011.

Karthikeyan told Autocar India he will be on the grid in time for the inaugural Indian Grand Prix this year:

I have worked really hard to come back to F1 and it will be a dream come true to race in front of the home crowd in our country’s debut Grand Prix. I hope that the Indian public will spur me on with their blessings and good wishes.
Narain Karthikeyan

Karthikeyan previously raced in F1 with Jordan in 2005. The team was run by current HRT team principal Colin Kolles at the time. Karthikeyan later joined Williams as a reserve driver.

Karthikeyan said on Twitter:

Back in F1 in 2011. Signed a deal to race for HRT. I’ve always maintained that my time in F1 was not over and now making good on that promise.

Huge thanks to my long-time supporters in the Tata Group. Their support has been instrumental.
Narain Karthikeyan

Fellow Indian Karun Chandhok drove for HRT in the first half of 2010.

    1. *smacks forehead*

      1. I had the exact same reaction.

Well.. I am partly to blame for Karthkeyan’s comeback. Last year, after Chandhok was replaced by Yamamoto, I told my friend – “HRT doesn’t care about who is driving the car. As long as they get paid, they would even sign someone as unworthy as Karthikeyan.”

Sorry to have jinxed it. My sincerest apologies to all F1 fans around the world. I accept your criticism and insults.

        1. Shame on you for bringing this about, you gave Kolles the idea! ;-)

How much he had to bring with him, and what car he will be driving is what I am now curious of.

hahaha I commet this one to be the first in at least one post!!! Now going serious… Kartikheyan is ont the best to improve that team. Just like a little older Chankdok I think

Wow Snobeck you have posted one probably just a milisecond before me

    3. ***?
Hopefully he means its only for Indian GP

      1. That’s what I thought! I’d be very happy for him to make just a solitary guest appearance!

    4. If Karthikeyan gets a race this year and Chandhok doesn’t, I will go ballistic.

      1. Hear hear!

      2. He may have the seat, but it doesn’t guarantee
he’ll ever race. With the 107% rule, he’ll probably practice a lot, and then do some laps in Q1.

        1. The 107% rule will keep Karthikeyan from racing. Whether he is signed for an entire season or just for 1 GP, I really doubt he will make the cut for the Sunday race on any occassion. Karthikeyan was without a doubt one of the worst drivers to ever enter the sport.. he pretty much shares the spotlight with Yuji Ide.

I’m disappointed that Chandhok didn’t get the drive and Karthikeyan did… I guess we have to thank TATA and their sponsorship money for that.

    5. Come on!!!!First Sakon and then him!!!!But got to say he is a nice driver

    6. Welcome to the HRT Carousel! Please buy your tickets at the counter and wait in line.

      1. To be honest, I’m starting to think that my dream of driving an F1 car isn’t over after all. I might be 30, and a bit on the lardy side, but I have an impeccable racing record – in fact, I’ve never lost a race!* I could probably scrape together a few hundred quid too.

So, Mr Kolles, if you’re watching – I can get a couple of weeks off in July, can I race the HRT at Silverstone?

        *I haven’t entered any either.

        1. Suddenly it seems worthwhile buying a lottery ticket doesn’t it!!

          1. Unfortunately even if you win the lottery you won’t be able to drive because FIA won’t give you a super-license. Your hours playing F1 in PlayStation probably doesn’t count as race experience.

            1. They gave one to Chandhok.

      2. HRT- ‘Hiring Drivers TODAY!’
        its just an advert.

        1. COTD to sato113. Make it happen.

        2. @sato113. Hilarious. COTD in my opinion.

          1. I think Racers would work better than drivers because otherwise it would be HDT. Racers would make it HRT, but it is less accurate as pay-drivers are not racers. :)

        3. sorry i did actually mean Racers not drivers! lol

    7. Fantastic, a driver who somehow managed to crash on the back straight at Shanghai. Just what we need in F1!

probably FOTA or some other organization should put some tougher requirements to be a F1 pilot.. I mean, money is getting away the talent required to succeed in this sport. I’m sure fans would like more battling and less blue flags. The requirements could be in some kind of “neutral” car and track, such as Paul Ricard HTTT in a Toyota car… to set some average time in that track, if not, just stay away from F1!!! I think one of the best things (at least) for this year will be the 107% rule

        1. OmarR-Pepper (@)
          6th January 2011, 17:24

… and dreaming that F1 could NOT be about money and just about talent is a dream for free

        2. Isn’t there already such a thing in your super-license test?

      2. yeah what was the story behind that crash again?

      Unbelievable comeback by narain!!!!
i think he’ll be faster than karun Chandhok for sure..

      1. Truly unbeliveable, I can’t believe I’m reading this!!!

Will Karun also be able to get into the grid? 2 Indians in F1…I’m speechless!

        1. Wait a minute…

Does that mean he’ll say goodbye to his NASCAR Truck career. At the beginning of the year he was tweeting about the incredible experience of NASCAR, his team was saying to the effect that they’ll train him to get all the way up to the Sprint Cup in a few years. They were counting on support from Indian fans in the USA. Where’s all this going to end up?

          1. Anshumaan Tuteja
            7th January 2011, 4:55

did he say he’ll stay the whole season??
nobody stays the whole season at hrt!!!

and i’m pretty sure karun wud nt be able to make it atleast nt at hrt perhaps a FI test driver?? bt what abt Paul di Resta then?

p.s. in a pvt test session coducted by FI in december last year on simulators narain was joined by none other than Karun Chandhok! and 1 of them was faster by a full second..reports say Karun was quicker and if thats the case, hrt are gearing up to be at the very back again

          2. Maybe they will now put Chandhok in that role? The fans will love his comments after the races.

    9. He won an award for the most popular person in NASCAR for 2010. What is it with these Indian. Drivers being so popular?? Have this guy (i can’t spell his name) and chandhok and formula one will be the worlds most popular sport

      1. Have you ever seen Cricinfo when there’s an article about Tendulkar? A hundred million Indians descend on it with their opinions. I suspect a similar phenomenon occurs whenever there’s a popularity vote…

      2. Only in the truck series, which has such low of a talent level all it is a bunch of washed up Nascar vets mixed with young guys who will never make it.

        1. …And Nelson Piquet Jnr, if I remember rightly?

    10. Well at least that clears it up. Didn’t know who to put my money on for next years F1 champion. Now Narain is back he’s going to deliver BIGTIME. Formula one 2011 world champion Narain Karthikeyan. Great odds, great bet, don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to make some big bucks fellow punters.

      1. He will have to fight closely with his soon to be announced team-mate – Sakon Yamamoto.

        1. I heard Yuji Ide had got a good sponsorship package together and Sakon was getting dropped… isn’t it sad how real talent isn’t being given a chance in F1 any more!

          1. Sakon isn’t real talent.

            1. Sarcasm alert.

          2. Sakon must be thrillled .. there will actually be someone he can outqualify, and possibly lap during a race.

            1. Hell at this stage I wouldn’t be surprised if Andrea Montemini makes a comeback mid season.

            2. Or Ricardo Rosset

            3. I think Keith would agree with me that one season with Jordan doesn’t give us enough to classify him as the worst driver around. What else could he do with a Jordan.

He was crash prone, but he was generally quicker than Tiago Monteiro, his team-mate. I know Monteiro is no great talent, but I think most of you are too premature in ruling Narain out. I think we should give him the benefit of a doubt since he hasn’t been in a competitive team long enough in F1 to prove or disprove anything.

2011 won’t give us a chance to judge Narain’s true performance either. He has been out of F1 for too long so he won’t have much of a chance to get to grips with the car, if there is going to be one, and HRT aren’t going to be high up in the developmental race again. And as the season wears on most of you will be thinking, “Weren’t we right all along?”

But there hasn’t been and probably never will be a true chance to gauge Narain’s talent. He isn’t PR savvy and seems to have some pride, unlike Karun. But that shouldn’t cloud the judgement.

True insiders who’ve known both Karun and Narain and seen them come up the ranks actually rate the latter as the fastest, in terms of raw speed. And in F3 he was right up there with Takumo Sato and Anthony Davidson in Carlin as one of the best.

If you really want to know about Narain’s talent you need to ask Trevor Carlin who ran him in British F3 and World Series. And you can’t blame Colin Kolles for taking in Narain as Kolles truly knows Narain’s capabilities from his Jordan and Le Mans Series outings with the Kolles Audi R10 TDI in 2009.

He hasn’t had sit-up-and-take-notice results but stats don’t give the whole picture. It’s too much to classify him as an also-ran. Comparing him to Deletraz and Yamamoto…you guys are way off the mark.

He may not be impressive this year. But if so it wouldn’t be because he isn’t good enough, but because he has been away for too long.

    11. Good god…does he have too come back?

    12. If I win the lotto, I’d be giving Colin Kolles a call!

    13. Oh deer. That is all I can possibly say, and yes, I did just make an in-joke.

      1. A kind of horse, with horns.

        1. JPM at the A1 ring!!! :P

      2. *insane laugh*

    14. Is Kolles bringing all his previous drivers ‘back’
      Fees applicable.
Mind you would you really want to pay to drive that car?
Someone said ‘it’s still a F1 car and it’s better than any other car on the road…well, it’s not racing ‘on the road’ is it?, it’s on a track with far superior F1 cars…I rest my case…

      1. In all seriousness though… does he bring enough sponsorship to leave the seat open for either Senna or Klien? Or will they have to draft in Yamamoto?

I think this means the end of Chandhok at HRT, can’t see them fielding two Indians.

        1. I doubt we will ever see Senna racing for HRT again. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him announced as a third driver for another team at some point.

          1. I can’t see him as third driver anywhere to be honest. That could be it for him as far as F1 is concerned. If Honda hadn’t dropped out, it could’ve been so, so different!

            1. Ben N,

I always think, had Brawn GP picked him over Barrichello in 2009…

            2. …he would have done worse than Barrichello and probably not won any races.

            3. …worse, it would have affected Button’s performance in some races in not having Rubens car setup help. Vettel would posibly be a 2 time champion now.

            4. I think that’s the most disturbing thing I’ve ever heard.

      2. So we might see Albers and Doornbos making a return?

    15. Just another journeyman F1 driver with a large bank account and nothing else to spend his earnings on.

I guess it gives HRT the chance of selling tons of merchandise for the Indian GP when they have 2 Indian drivers – although I highly doubt either will be the favoured choice that far into the season….

When was the last time Narain actually drove an F1 car? And does he still have a Super Licence?

      1. Anshumaan Tuteja
        6th January 2011, 17:44

he has the bank balance..that will do lool

    17. Well go for him…

    18. …am I the only one who thought he wasn’t actually that bad? Certainly not Yamamoto or Nakajima ‘bad’

      1. Nakajima is better in my opinion. I can’t imagine Karthikeyan scoring as many (few?) points for Williams, I must admit.

    19. good for him, but at one point he did say sometime around 2008 he was not keen on joining the back-markers like force india. now he is paying for a drive with HRT.

    20. OH GOD NOT THIS GUY!

    21. Huge thanks to my long-time supporters in the Tata Group. Their money has been instrumental.

Fixed the quote;). This will probably mean we won’t see Chandok at HRT again, or maybe as a test driver so they can have two indian drivers at the indian grand prix.

    22. okay.. they have one driver
but do they have the car to begin with?

    23. It’s great to see another wealthy great driver back to the top level! It is always refreshing to see old also-runs young guns fill the seats of such a bad promising racing outfit. I hope Narain will be able to keep the cash flow high level performances constant, or he is bound to be replaced by another pay talented driver long before the Indian GP…

    24. This is beyond hilarious.

    25. Forget the silly season, now it’s time for the absolutely ridiculous season. Article 151c, anyone?

      1. lol, i take it thats the one concerning bringing the sport into disrepute?

    26. This is a disaster, one of the all time worst drivers is coming back. This is going to end very badly.

    27. every day i hear something from hrt i like them less

    28. Why not Karun Chandhok?

      1. Why the token Indian?

Because there is a Indian GP?

Why not the best drivers that are available in the world?

F1, is the Sport of Whores!

It is not about racing anymore, that died years ago. F1 does not deserve the loyal support that it receives.

        1. F1 has always been the sport of whores. There have been pay drivers and privateers as long as the championship has existed. I remember a young Micheal Schumacher paying for his first drive. That being said he wasn’t a drop out having another go.

To be honest I’m surprised this team is going to make it to the grid next year.

    29. This has actually amused me quite a lot. At least this means that HRT are likely to make it to the grid next season :-)

    30. I expect to see taki inoue in the other HRT

      1. Wow! How did you even remembered that guy?

      2. Being hit by the safety car is probably the only way HRT could sink lower…

      3. Or Paul Belmondo…

      4. Got to be Jean-Denis Deletraz, surely!

      5. Chanoch Nissany, who remembers him?

    31. In other news Susan Boyle Has been given a seat in Red Bull Racing Sebastien Vettel has been deemed to be losing his speed she will be partnered by Anne Widdecomb F1 is going in a new direction waaaheeeey

    32. So now HRT, the Spanish team, have two Indians on their books… in other news, Force India sign Alonso and Alguersuari for 2012!

    33. well, hrt evidently need money, and karain clearly has ‘sponsorship’. but for goodness sake, surely karun could of received sponsorship instead? i really hope klien’s the second driver – was really happy for him, regarding his good showing at singapore.

i would of said de la rosa for second driver, but he apparently doesn’t see them as a serious racing outfit (can you blame him?), so will probably go back to mclaren as a simula … test driver. interestingly, hamilton apparently really wants to have pedro back at mclaren as a test driver. dunno what’s gonna happen to bruno senna.

      1. It is interesting that the year they didn’t have Pedro, their usual excellent development rate wasn’t up to its usual standard. I wonder if the absence of Pedro might have had an effect on that?

    34. He must be a pay driver must be!!!!

      1. F1 is turning into a joke! OK there were already pay drivers in the past, but now it looks like money does prevail over talent. No place for Hulkenberg and Senna but well for Karthikeyan and Petrov.

        1. Airtone,

Your comments are right on the button.

Where is the incentive for some young Kart driver to be an F1 driver?

This is all down to that little S*** of a stunted dwarf who never has enough money, power and control.

          1. dp,

Indeed! The best thing that can now happen for F1 is Bernie to retire…

            1. Airtone,

You said it. Can we, as fans, garner enough support to say , “We don’t want a Bernie-owned motor racing championship anymore?”

This is the right time to think about it.

    35. “Huge thanks to my long-time supporters in the Tata Group. Their support has been instrumental.”

      Two words…”KA-CHING”!

    36. Where’s everyone getting this idea that they have 2 Indian drivers? So far Karthikeyan is the only driver we know of, and I can’t imagine Senna or Chandhok returning to drive for Kolles again. Maybe Sack’s o’ Moneyoto will be the 2nd driver…

      1. My bet’s on Davide Valsecchi.

    37. Shot through the foot,
      And you’re too blame;
      Darling you give the sport
      A bad name.

      1. **Like**

    38. Frank Montagny Please :)

    39. Okay, some actual throughts on it: it’s taken me completely by suprrised. I never would have picked Karthikeyan to return to the sport, least of all after such a long absence. It reeks of money (though if I were Tata and I wanted to make sure an Indian driver raced in the Indian Grand Prix, I woul have done a deal to buy the Force India seat for one race), and speaks to Hispania’s sitution more than anything else. They’ve been in the sport long enough and committed enough mistakes that they should know when they’re shooting themselves in the foot by now.

I can’t see this as ending anything but badly.

      1. Agree – this will end badly.

Call me naive and a dreamer, but wouldn’t you want to pick the creme de la creme of talent coming through the lower ranks. Tie them into a contract that allows a big team to buy them out for some serious cash and you get the best of both worlds – an extra second per lap in speed and a nice pay out at the end of the season. I understand the economics of taking a “paid” driver but this guy will be atleast a second off the pace – how much will be spent on R&D trying to get the car itself to go a second quicker?

        1. It is really looking like the perfect entry to top the F1rejects list. As HRT probably did not have the money even to develop a decent incorporation of the Williams back end into their 2010 car, now TATA will be paying for that, so there will be a car to drive.

Very much 80′ fun with andrea modi, forti, Eurobrun etc. Good thing Ned remembered them to us yesterday, we will be reliving some of that in the months to come.

      2. Tata group wont be able to buy a Force India seat. Vijay Mallya is rich enough to give the seat to a genuinely fast driver, rather than slowpokes when it comes to the level of formula 1.

        1. That’s true Wayne.

    40. has anyone taken antony davidson into consideration for any of the teams left he said that he really wants to get back in to an f1 car again for any team, if i heard correctly.

    41. He has a good helmet :-)

      1. Has he? I wouldn’t know, I’m straight. ;)

        1. Ahhhhh I saw the joke and was rather hoping that no-one had as awful a sense of humour as myself…!

    42. Seriously now, Karthvader(sp?) and Yamamoto has to be the worst driver lineup for any team in recent times. Just Terrible.

    43. Great, A donkey going to race a mule, thought I’d never see that day. Thank god for the 107% rule.

    44. yuji ide please and Kazuki Nakajima and Piquet jnr and Bourdais, Scott speed also a bit of Luca Badoer bring em all back who cares about Hamiltons Alonsos Vettels and Kubicas and webbers bring the golden oldies back woo hoo.

    45. Davide Valsecchi looks very promising:
      1. he’s 23yr old italian
      2. won 2009/10 gp2 aisia series
      3. finished 8th in championship in gp2 last year

HRT are team to beat if they get this guy as well!

    46. Doesnt state what kind of comeback it will be, could be a testing role for all we know… Seems odd for a driver to announce his place on the grid for 2011, before the team announces said driver.

    47. At first glance, I thought our friend Keith was playing an early April fool’s joke on us… unfortunately, this doesnt seem to be the case.

On the other hand, it’s nice to see Colin Kolles has no problem’s to see his team finish last and has made the effort to cement this… or maybe he just want’s Bruno to look better then he really is.

    48. I am surprised but one of the main reason why he got the ticket is that he is sponsored by Tata Group the company who owns Jaguar & Land Rover.

      1. and u can expect more of this wet whether performance

        1. Thank you speed046,

Your links show Narain had the potential. The only question is after all these years dose he still have it?

        2. And while are at the point of Shanghai…

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hz3xl0sHH4U

    49. Being indian happy to see that an indian is again racing in F1 but like many others i feel this is very short sighted decision from HRT. Chandok would have been more valuable in longterm as he is much better driver & has better PR skills to connect with people. I don’t see what value Narian gives to struggling HRT in developing car considering he hardly had any top level racing experience in last 5yrs. As had been case with HRT throughout 2010, in the end it seems money mattered and i am still wondering how many races narian is gng to participate (other than Indian GP) or he is part of 5-6 drivers HRT is gng to sign for 2011? Happy that atleast FI’s mallya is not falling in to this trap of money or nationality.

    50. It feels good to hear one more Indian will drive in F1 but as soon as I see cars fighting at the front and drivers of the caliber of Alonso, Ham and Vettel, I really dont care if an Indian is driving or not.

He is backed by the wealthy TATA group and that tells the story. Maybe Karun will be a test driver now.

      1. Why does an Indian have to drive in F1?

If F1 is the creme de la creme of motorsport – does it not make sense for the sport to attract only the BEST drivers in the world?

The problem with F1, is the supporters starting to think and therefore agree with the corporate whore logic that is presently being applied, thus condoning it.

Buying a seat in F1! Like some prostitute buying a window in Amsterdam’s Red Light District. Exactly the same – no different.

The sport does not need more money – it needs higher standards and quality or respect and value will belong to bygone era.

        1. Why does an Indian have to drive in F1?

I think that is verging on the racial discrimination side be careful what you say.

          1. Faraz,

It is either racial discrimination or it is not? I think exactly the same of Petrov, am I still racist? I believe in a system of merit, or we have no quality and no values – and not being a corporate whore which this Indian is.

Rest assured, the most racist people that I have ever met, are not white!

The only reason why an Indian is driving in F1, is not because of his ability, because he is proven S***, but because the GP1 is allegedly being held in India later this year, and there is Indian money behind him – no other reason or perhaps he is quite high up in the racist Indian Caste System!

    51. It’s surprised me but I can fully understand the signing. HRT need cash and they need it now. We don’t yet know the details of the deal but if it includes a significant amount of money it might just allow the second driver to be someone with some real quality who can get what is possibly going to be a very poor car through qualifying and get some results.

I don’t remember Karthikeyan being too bad. If I remember correctly back in the Jordan days he got up to speed quickly and had the measure of Montiero for the first half of the year but just never really improved from there. I fear in 2011 though that it’s going to take a real talent to qualify a HRT at every race. More so even then the likes of Klien and Senna.

What’s with all the harsh criticism? Karthikeyan was a frontrunner in F3, did well at Macau, won a couple international events, and won races in A1GP and Superleague as recently as last year. His only ride in F1 was a hopelessly slow Jordan. Sure, he might not be the best driver available, and he’s not going to do any better in an HRT, but he’s far from being the worst driver ever as some people have suggested.

    53. re: Keith’s article on the Dec 15th – Kolles: drivers “the only reason” Lotus beat HRT.

Ah it does make sense. We have a new class of driver. These are not just pay drivers but scapegoat pay drivers. Drivers who agree to take the blame for being so slow. A last ditch F1 career effort, a do or die season.

I guess Kolles wants to use the same excuse again after this season. By hiring the worst posible drivers with super licences it goes some way in hiding the fact that the car wouldn’t actually be capable of making the 107% qualifying time even with a driving god at the wheel.

Come december 2011 we will read – Kolles: Drivers “The only reason we never raced”

    54. Love him or hate him, Joe Saward has an interesting theory about the second HRT seat. He’s suggesting that Vijay Mallaya may have to “buy” the HRT seat for Liuzzi as the only conceivable way to make room for Di Resta at Force India.

Liuzzi + Karthikeyan + HRT = AWESOME!!!!!! (That’s sarcasm, by the way)

      1. Well Liuzzi would be pretty good for HRT, he surely has the capacity to bring some input into that car and should be able to get it going as far as it goes.

Not sure he would be all to happy about it, though.

    55. The Indian GP (October 30) is quite late in the season.

I wonder how much TATA is paying for one race (Or at the very best, three)

      1. Bet won’t happen… Spending on one F1 season isn’t that great a deal for the TATA group, they have loads of it… In fact they have been sponsoring Narain for about 10 years now with almost nil returns, so they probably see this year as one big opportunity with the Indian gp around… Hope its not just about money though, these guys help FI with CFD, have developed some kind of software for Ferrari in the past and own Jaguar, so they are not entirely dumb… I would also liked them to have backed Karun instead but for some reason they haven’t associated with Karun or with Mallya for that matter… May be return of Jaguar in 2013???

    56. I dont think Narain was all that bad..he ranks among the worse but I think there are quite a few below him on the list.

I thought he had a pretty decent early part of the season in 05, he was ahead of his teamate if memory serves me right. His form went down hill in the second half.

Whatever said and done, he is not good enough to be in F1. Sad that Karun is not getting the backing, because I think that he has what it takes to develop into a decent driver given a reasonable team

    57. Excellent

I hope Chandhok gets the second drive and we will have the first ever India vs India battle, they can race for their own title with a show down in India

      My prediction

Chandhok would smash Karthikeyan by making the 107% rule …just

    58. 2012 HRT driver line-up (assuming they make it that far)Bill gates signed alongside Donald trump.

    59. Yes!

I always like Karthikeyan’s unnecessarily untidy driving style. He was about the most slideways driver in the field in 2005. Looking forward to some more spectacular overdriving!

    60. ITs hard to say he is not worthy of being in any formula. he is not good like top rated drivers but is more than enough talent to race
he has won every formula series he has competed except f1 where he was driving jordan and he did not got updated car until Belgian gp 16th race of the season

if u guys watch he had reasonable first half season he was equally match for his team mate he is quick in wet he was 4.8 second fast in wet qualifying in Melbourne than his teammate he lost bit to his teammate at later half

he did not finish the race only five times of which three time it was not even his fault

he did not finish Bahrain due to Electrical failure

      Monaco due to Hydraulics failure
