where the floor meets the side pod – behind the barge boards you see a section where there is no carbon fibre texture just mat black finish. Is this heat proofing for a front exhaust behind the Barge-board?

Looks to me like it has 2 effects!
1) reduces the air hitting the rear wheels that will have a high pressure from the wheel rotation. less air hitting this area means less drag.
2) cleaner air line, air rushing past the side of the cock-pit (te he) is held by the centre pod. low pressure as it is released from the back alowing the rear wing to get a cleaner less worked air.
also may have an effect on drawing exhaust and engine bay heat out the back, and helping the rear defuser
