These car had 1000+ horsepower

Well, some of them did for some of the time – the Ligier and the Williams both ran Cosworth DFV engines, which fell well short of 1,000 bhp.
The Megatron engine in the Arrows, however, is essentially the same BMW unit which managed to peak at 1,500 bhp.

Gotta love the quadriplane rear wing on the Lotus 94T.

Extreme downforce!

It certainly was an era of extremes! I guess it was not as much for Downforce perse, but to fine tune the handling on the rear axle.

I love that Ligier. “I’ve got so much downforce – who needs a front wing?”
Not a very elegant shape though, is it?

I’ve watched most of the classic F1 on the BBC website, and the first time I saw some of these (perhaps at Monaco?) I kept wondering why Murray and James never mentioned how they had lost the front wing!

I saw the JS11/15 race at Long Beach back in 1979. The cars were so beautiful in the California sun and had that “look” without the front wings. Again at a time when ground effects was new and the ways teams went about it was different and unique. Ligier choice to go front wingless made them my favorite.

Hi guys. I am the owner and driver of the Ligier JS11/15. Very proud to hear your comments. This car is very fantastic. First time on track since a complete 2 years restoration.
BasCB (@bascb) said on 4th July 2011, 22:01
Lovely car, I think. Great job in building it all up again!

Meagtron, what a great name for anything automotive. Transformers included.
That Ligier is a beautiful colour.
You can see how aero was finding its feet more.
