For your consideration

Here are some of the drivers who impressed me during the Singapore Grand Prix weekend:

Sebastian Vettel – Continues to build momentum, in this kind of form the opposition simply can’t get a look in.

Jenson Button – Didn’t look like getting on terms with Vettel until the last stint, but threw everything at it despite being unwell.

Paul di Resta – An especially impressive performance at a tough track for a rookie, though his path to sixth was eased by his team mate.

Sergio Perez – Snatched a point after a bruising race which saw him going wheel-to-wheel with Nico Rosberg and being hit by Michael Schumacher and Bruno Senna.

Heikki Kovalainen – Opportunities for Lotus to beat a car from the midfield are rare but Kovalainen nailed this one.

    1. Got to be Vettel again. That’s the third time I’ve voted for him this year and the third race in a row, as it happens. Someone needs to do something soon, because Sebastian Vettel + the RB7 is just demoralising.

      1. I guess I’ll have to vote for him too. I really don’t know another driver right now. Button and Alonso were flawless aswell so if we take car performance out of it there are a couple of drivers to consider. Still Vettel was impressive and he’ll probably do it again in two weeks since its another of his favourite tracks and the RBR should be good.

        1. I think the decision was easier for me after Spa and Monza, but you still can’t look past him after this weekend. Button, Alonso and di Resta all get honourable mentions, but you can’t say they drove better than the man that was flawless all weekend.

      2. Voted for Di Resta, great drive from him.

Vettel was brilliant as usual and Button also drove well. In a time where it is often sensible to ‘save your engine’, it was great to see him push for the win till the flag.

        1. Wow I really expected Button to be topping the list.

Funny as this time I feel like he actually deserves it, unlike Monaco when he made no attempt of trying to win the race, this time he pushed for it.

          1. Looks like its between Vettel and DiResta this time.

I went with Perez, as he really had a lot of opportunities to get damaged, but somehow managed to hold it on track and without damage to finish in the points again.

Di Resta was fine, but a lot of it was strategy, not that impressive. Button was really nice to see but mainly in the last stint.
Vettel – what to say other than that he’s got it under control. But we can vote him driver of the weekend, when he clinches the WDC next GP.

          2. I voted for Vettel but thought as well Button would have had more votes. I enjoyed his progress a lot but Vettel was awesome and missin on the Grand Slam by so little testifies this.

          3. Agreed, Button definitely deserves more votes here than he did for Monaco, where Vettel was unfairly overlooked after the near miracle he pulled off with tires after his team botched the pitstop so badly for him.

            1. I think Button had a plan in Monaco… I have to disagree, Peter!

          4. For me Button left it too late in the race to push for the win, and Vettel was probably just managing his pace at that stage and could have gone faster if he felt threatened by Button.

    2. My vote goes to Paul di Resta, a great performance in an unknown track and don’t forget his team, they provided an outstanding strategy for him. This year IMO it’ll be difficult to choose a “rookie of the year” between him and Sergio Perez.

      1. Exactly. The most impressive part was his complete lack of experience on the track as well as the problems he had in practice. I knew this kid had promise when I saw him in F3 over here, but that was truly impressive stuff. In other news, Edoardo Mortara just clinched another podium in DTM. He’s the best rookie currently over there. If any F1 teams had eyes and wanted a true talent, they should really take a look at that guy.

    3. No other than Vettel deserves it this time.

      1. Agreed, I like Di Resta and all, but Vettel once again proved he is in a class of his own. Button is proving to be the man to beat for 2nd in the championship however, and with he, Alonso, Webber and Hamilton all close on points, I can’t understand why people say the season is boring.

Vettel is truly something special, this is something we can all look back on with awe, but we still have a lot of really good drivers duking it out for the best of the rest moniker.

    4. Both Vettel and Di Resta did a brilliant job, but Vettel’s dominance was just sublime.

    5. My vote went to the Tearful Champion as well. He was on superb form the entire weekend, yet again.

      1. Tearful Champion I liked it. BTW He said he had something in his eyes. I must admit though, Vettel was the Driver of the weekend.Just narrowly missed the grand slam. Although Lewis did a great job of climbing up to 5th from almost the last.

    6. I voted for Lewis Hamilton, because Felipe Massa said he did a good job.

      1. Had to laugh at that :-)

      2. Lol. I was wondering why anyone would vote for Hamilton, but this is certainly a good point.

        1. I agree Vettel was the Driver of the weekend. But Lewis did quite a good job if we forget for a moment the minor mistake and the big drama around the Massa Crash.

          1. The problem with his minor mistakes is that they happen way too often. Lewis lost 2010 championship because of that. He finished 16 points behind Vettel. 16 easy points, if it wasn’t for his minor mistakes: a contact with Massa in Italy and if his clash with Webber in Singapore.

          2. minor mistake? what is a major mistake? could you explain what is a major mistake in F1? the dumb crash is doing that every race is not called anymore mistake minor or major.is called being absolutely careless.
you are on my way . I can’t overtake you I will crash you.

            1. “You are on my way. I can’t overtake you I will crash you.”

Come on, let’s be serious. I think we can safely say that it wasn’t his thought process. That’s why I can’t take most people who criticize Lewis seriously, even though I’m one of them.

It was a minor mistake. The thing is, that all of his minor mistakes are becoming a major problem, not only for him, but also for his team.

      3. Maybe the poll should have been for ‘The Most Entertaining Driver’, Hamilton would have won that!

      4. I guess we can say that Hamilton has been one of the most consistent drivers this season…

      5. I voted for Lewis Hamilton, because Felipe Massa said he did a good job.

This really made me laugh!! Awesome..

    7. Massa for the most hilarious moment of the weekend. Just kidding :)

Vettel. He was perfect. I was so close to picking Paul di Resta though. He was phenomenal and smart on the Sunday. He kept up with Sutil when he was on the harder tyre despite never having raced at this track before. He was just brilliant.

    8. Vettel was dominant,again…..

      Who voted for Shumacher’s crash?

      1. LOL. I found that funny as well, but not even half as funny as Hamilton’s 19 votes to Alonso’s 3

        1. I know Tod.. I chuckled as well..

    9. My fourth vote for Vettel.A few others had a good performance but his was a Fantastic performance!

Seriously, MW should get his act together and start challenging him, he’s the only one with a chance. Otherwise, the 5 races remaining will all be like this one, no fight for the lead. And if you think Vettel will ease up after winning the title in Japan, you better think again.

    10. MW needs to get back his confidence and aggression that he had last year. Somehow he has resigned to the fact to the fact he is happy with second. Hope he does not end up like Barichello and Massa.

      1. But Webber has to maintain the gap

        1. Because he’s incapable of closing it.

          1. You really can’t assume that Mark is on an equal footing when it comes to car performance..
Both Webber and Massa have been superb drivers in the past and both within a hair’s breath of taking the title.

I find it hard to belive that Redbull and Ferrari aren’t spear heading their efforts into the number 1 driver.

This makes it impossible to judge their efforts over any race weekend.

BTW my username “MW” stands for my own initials not Mark Webber :)

              facepalm

            2. Look at Webber’s starts to see where he loses out the most. In Singapore he got on the podium because of Hamilton’s qualifying snafu and clipping Massas wing. Webber isn’t exactly well known for his great starts.

Only a conspiracy theorist would failed to see that since 2008 in the Toro Rosso Vettel has outscored MW every year. He was on a pace to outscore him in 2007 if he raced a full year.

Vettel has actually forced Webber to raise his game, and in 2010 you saw the results of that. Now Webber has sunk back to the level he was at before Vettel came along.

            3. Vettel has actually forced Webber to raise his game, and in 2010 you saw the results of that. Now Webber has sunk back to the level he was at before Vettel came along.

I have to say that does make sense uan.
However, no more than my argument it’s very speculative. I would ask, why has Webber suddenly dropped back from 2010?
It seems logical to me that after the 2010 season where he obviously fell out with the team over being considered the “No. 2 driver” he might have made a deal with the team which divided resources in a way that ultimately didn’t work out for him.

If we go with your theory above a logical explanation might be that Vettel just upped his game from 2010 which demoralized Mark Webber and forced him into his 2011 slump.

I don’t think I quite buy that, MW seems like a pretty tough guy mentally to me. But that’s just my opinion.

          2. well he closed it in Silverstone, didn’t he?

            1. Yes, one example. Maybe three examples this season in total. Big whoop.

            2. He totally did! In fact I think that Mark had more than one good race this year, therefore we should conclude that both Red Bull drivers are almost equal. Let’s be “fair and balanced”, just like Fox News ;)

In fact, if Mark improves only three things, he will be beating Sebastian on regular basis. These are: his starts, qualifying performance and race pace.

Now seriously. I’m sure Mark contributes tremendously to the development of the car and despite his poor performance this year he seems to be really valued by his team… but man, he really needs to up his game.

It pains me to see Mark like this, because I think he can do much better. I like him and I think most people do. He’s not afraid to show his character and when he does, he has nothing to be ashamed of. It isn’t always the case with other drivers. For example the bits of character recently shown by Massa aren’t particularly pleasing… Right, I’m rambling now, so I’ll stop before I jump on another tangent.

    11. Sebastian Vettel by a trillion miles.

He was nothing short of sublime (again) as well as dominating all of practice, qualifying and leading every lap.

Yes, I thnk di Resta, Button and Alonso did well, but Vettel did very well.

      This lad just gets better.

    12. The in form drivers at Singapore were Vettel, Button, Alonso and di Resta, and they make up my semi-final! From them, I think Vettel and di Resta make the final of my Driver of the Weekend vote, and in the end, I had to go for Vettel.

di Resta was superb, but Vettel, again, outclassed the field. He had a solid lead slashed and then built it again. He lead every lap, and I can’t fault him, even if I wanted to. I have literally no criticism. A deserved double WDC.

    13. Di Resta. Honorable mention to Sebastian Vettel, both kids just keep getting better and better.

    14. I guess it “should” be Vettel but di Resta impressed me a lot and it looks like he has a good chance to win this. Kind of a fudge considering he didn’t even set a Q3 lap!

    15. Vettel by a mile. Several other drivers did well but my god. Vettel just can’t be touched at the moment.

    16. Yeah, Vettel for sure, but DiResta deserved it too.

    17. Went for the 45deg index finger

    18. I am shocked very few people voted Webber?

I think Vettel deserve it so do Di Resta & Hamilton. But Webber’s move on Alonso on lap 10 was something special & he did the same thing again after the race restart.

      1. That is true they were good moves but comparing him to the only person you really can – his team mate, same car etc – he’s just not doing well.
He did better in qualie than recently, but he’s getting his starts terribly wrong.
Certainly couldn’t give him driver of the day, great moves but he shouldn’t have been back there in that car.

      2. I’d find it hard to give DOTW to someone who finished the race in a lower position than he started it.

        1. And around half a minute after his team mate.

    19. Totally di Resta by light years — pole position, dominated the race from start to finish…oh, wait, no, that was someone else! So I voted for that guy instead. ;-)

    20. My vote goes to Paul di Resta for making Force India’s strategy work.

    21. Didn’t realise what a coup Heikki pulled off till you wrote about him here.

Tough one between Vettel, Heikki and Di Resta. All three drove races at different ends of the field so hard to make comparisons.

I would say Vettel got disadvantaged by the safety car most. And that made Button look better in the final stint than he actually was. Di Resta and Heikki were not particularly advantaged or disadvantaged by it.

Both Di Resta and Vettel’s success was down to a superb first stint. Di Resta going as fast as Sutil on the harder tyre and Vettel going a second a lap faster than everyone. But Heikki’s success was down to a superb second half of the race. Taking into account that Singapore is the toughest race of the calendar for the drivers, I would say an equally good performance in second half of the race is difficult to achieve compared to the first half. So, I will vote for Heikki!

Awesome drive! Hope Lotus make more progress next year.

    22. Wow. I didn’t expect to see Vettel leading! Perhaps people really have turned a corner with him.

I went for Button. He had a great drive but what’s more important is that he is being consistently good at the moment. I know we should only base this on the race at hand but there is also plenty to be said for remaining so focussed and bringing the points home.

Honourable mention to Vettel too, untouchable, literally.

Of course Di Resta did very well also, a great result for him.

    23. Vettel had an almost perfect weekend again and I think Button got everything out of his car as well. I’m particularly happy for di Resta even if the timing of the safety car helped him a bit and his Force India seems to be a competitive car at the moment. I have been following Paul’s career since 2009 and I’ve got a feeling that he might be a championship contender in 3-5 years.

I think some people are a bit too harsh on Lewis Hamilton. Yes, he’s had a bad season so far and made too many silly mistakes. But he’s been often unlucky as well and the penalties have mostly been unfair. Singapore was a perfect example of this. Lewis’s bad start was simply ill luck. A driver who has lost half of his front wing in a clash and needs to make an extra pit stop because of that doesn’t deserve additional punishment. He’s already unhappy enough. I have actually rarely seen an F1 driver looking so frustrated after a race as Hamilton was. But he’s not lost his speed and his talent, he desperately wants to turn things right and he will be back.

That said giving the DotW award to him would obviously be too much. This time I’m gonna vote for Jerome d’Ambrosio. Jerome was close to Timo in qualifying, passed him at the start and kept Alguersuari, Senna, Petrov and Kovalainen behind for many laps despite Singapore being Glock’s favourite circuit and Virgin being significantly slower than Lotus, Renault and Toro Rosso.

      1. A driver who has lost half of his front wing in a clash and needs to make an extra pit stop because of that doesn’t deserve additional punishment

I think this is a pretty fundamental point. If you do something wrong you should get a punishment, and it shouldn’t matter if you disadvantaged yourself through your own actions.

To make a crude example, if I smash your window and steal your laptop, I don’t avoid prison because I cut my hand in doing so.

Interesting, and so far unique, choice for DOTW!

        1. That’s a very good argument Keith. However, I think that there is a difference between intentional and unintentional ‘crimes’. I don’t think Hamilton deliberately punctured Massa’s tyre. He just wanted to get past Massa and that didn’t work; moreover, Lewis damaged his own car as well. But I agree that your own wounds is not the main reason why you shouldn’t be punished. I just believe that drivers should never be punished for their mistakes unless there is a strong suspicion that one deliberately didn’t avoid the clash.

          1. How about a car accident on the road while (unintentionally) driving through a red light?

I’m at fault, I don’t just pay for my own damages. I’ll pay for the damages to the victims car, and likely be punished by the law.

Maybe Hamilton should consider himself lucky that he doesn’t have to pay Ferrari for the damage as well ;)

        2. To make a crude example, if I smash your window and steal your laptop, I don’t avoid prison because I cut my hand in doing so.

But you could argue the same for Schumi’s incident with Perez. Although admittedly Schumi’s end result was worse off but he still did the crime. Perez’s race was hampered cos of a punctured tyre. And as you rightly said, “If you do something wrong you should get punished, and it shouldn’t matter if you disadvantaged yourself through your own actions”. On this merit it’s evident that the FIA is quite inconsistent in their enforcement.

Although I’m no Lewis fan, my initial reaction was that it was a tough penalty when compared to his incident int eh same corner with Webber. Lewis was ahead of Webber and Webber should’ve been penalised for a careless move given he was in the position to do everything to avoid the situation – like braking early to avoid the collision – which is not too dissimilar to what Lewis could have done to prevent the collision with Massa.

My only reasoning for the FIA to penalise Lewis is the fact that he has been involved in many incidents this year, and the FIA is using these punishments to curb his carelessness as they can see if Lewis continues this behaviour it could potentially injure someone greatly or cause a fatality.

          1. Lewis’ incident with Webber last year was what I was referring to.

    24. Hamilton and Massa for me. I voted Hamilton, Only driver who showed us some racing was Hamilton. True, others were battling pretty well but Lewis was the hardest.

I wish he had not hit into Massa, the whole race outcome would have looked different. he would have finished in front of Button.

      1. If I had read this just after waking up, I would have gone back to bed

        1. Haha GameR_K

        2. Obviously not :)

That happens me sometimes too, and not for swear words..

          Bit Big Brotherish :P

      2. Coulda woulda shoulda… the fact is he did finished behind Jenson. So many of you Lewis Fan Boys thinking Lewis would spank Jenson at McLaren – far from it. And I doubt he would’ve finished a head of Jenson given his lacklustre performance at Monza. It would be very unlikely that Lewis would take the risk of punting his own team mate off the track to do so – it would’ve been worse than his incident with Massa in the eyes of McLaren management. And another fact is that Jenson got the fastest lap of the entire race on lap 54 – same lap that Lewis did his fastest. The time difference was just over 1.5 sec faster for Jenson for that lap. And not once did Lewis bettered Jenson’s lap times after the final pit stop – I really don’t know how Lewis would’ve even managed to keep up with Jenson in the final stint.

    25. Vettel. How can it be anyone else but him, really? He trounced everyone. Again. The guy is amazing.

Any other day I’d give to Di Resta or Perez, but when you’ve got someone who can seemingly win at will without breaking a sweat week in, week out, I can’t vote for anyone else.

    26. Vettel. Simply unstoppable in Singapore. That was a drive of a champion.

    27. Webber has thensame car as Vettel? Surely thou jest. That and SV is simply a better driver, sorry Mark.

    28. Voted for Di Resta. Button was second in my opinion with MArk Webber a close third for his overtakes on Alonso.

    29. I voted for Vettel as once again he is proving why he is good enough to win back to back championships. The BBC commentary team said it during the race that he seems to glide through whilst the others falter. Apart from his final stint where he looked under pressure from Button it was a stunning weekend. I just don’t get how he pulls out these amazing laps week after week, it’s just phenominal.

An honourable mention to both Button and Di Resta as they are really showing how to drive a mature race. Button started well and maintained the gap to the driver behind and after being unwell was extremely impressive. Button keeps on impressing me week after week.

Di Resta is not driving like it is his first season in F1 and really made it work this weekend.

    30. Voted against my default choice Vettel. For Paul to be only 2 tenths slower than Sutil on fresher and the faster tyres in the second(?) stint was the best indicator of his better job. Go FI :)

    31. The Vettel love is going to far, he’s an good driver in the best car with the whole of Red Bull behind him. He’s is not spectacular, he is not the second coming, he is lucky. When he wins races in the 2nd or 3rd best car as Hamilton, Button and Alonso have i’ll think more of him.

Before anyone uses the Torro Rosso argument don’t forget that Red Bull worked very closely with them that year, it wasn’t the ‘Amazing drive’ people seem to claim, he did well but there was a lot more to it than just driver skill.

      1. Well, I’ll use the “Toro Rosso” argument because it’s a valid one. It was a brilliant drive in a midfield car.

Vettel didn’t have the best car last year…Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren were pretty much on a par. Seb struggled a bit and made a few mistakes, just like they all did, but he was the one who won in the end, because, in the end, he was better than the others. Still is.

      2. Problem is maxie, on that day Vettel won they had a very different opinion to what they have today. Simply people are forgetful or hatred tends to blind them.
2nd or 3rd best car – I can provide examples from this year, but you will counter me with RB7’s qualifying pace alone. Meh, why bother?

      3. Before anyone uses the Torro Rosso argument don’t forget that Red Bull worked very closely with them that year

So? The RB wasn’t a race winning car that year but the TR in Vettel’s hands was. Will you argue that RB spend more time developing the TR then the RB to make it a race winning car?

        This year:
Spain. He won in a car that was a second a lap slower then McLaren in the final stint.
Monaco. On his tyres, he was 2 seconds a lap slower then Button and about the same with Alonso.
Hungary. Yes he didn’t win, but he made it stick on pole, while being in clearly the 2nd fastest machine on the grid on that day.

      4. I love how some people are just looking for excuses when it comes to Vettels abilitties.. First it was: He’s a crash kid!!.. then he shut everyone up this season.. Then it was.. He can’t overtake!.. then comes Monza.. Now it’s, He’s LUCKY? REALLY? Surely you must be running out of excuses soon…

        1. I reckon when Vettel wins his third title people will stop making excuses.

And yes I said when, not if.

    32. Alonso couldn’t have done much more, nor could Button but Vettel was out on his own. 1sec faster than any other car (that includes his teammate)for large parts of the race and very close to the Grand Chelem.
Notable mentions for Kovalainen, Perez, di Resta

    33. A brilliant performance from Vettel as per usual; he still managed to win, and if the SC wasn’t brought out, I doubt that the gap between him and Button would’ve been so small, but I voted for Paul Di Resta as coming 6th from a Force India car is very impressive, let alone a rookie.

I look forward to seeing Di Resta on the podium in the future!

Di Resta and Vettel ftw :).

Vettel is showing everyone he can manage a beast like the RB7. On similar drives, Webber is not even close (ruining all at the start doesn’t help him much anyway). And even if you say Red Bull is treating Webber just as a supporting driver, that’s not enough to explain why races are always for Seb. Great drive, let’s still see how Button keeps showing everyone he is REALLY better than Lewis… and about Massa interrupting LH on his interview, COME ON!!! It’s not so bad… probably Montoya or Irvine would have punched him with or hit him with the mic. It’s a little childish, but it’s also childish the way Hamilton is driving the good McLaren he has

    35. Has to be Vettel. He destroyed everybody this weekend without hardly braking a sweat.

      1. well, this was singapore, he was sweating quite a bit :-)

    36. I am a huge fan of Lewis but today my vote went for Vettel simply because he made winning look almost too easy. I noticed someone gave Massa the “thumbs up” and was thinking that the little Brazilian should’ve received a few more votes purely because of the huge press he managed to generate. Crybaby.

    37. If we were voting based on just the result then this poll would be pointless. But we’re not. We’re voting on the most impressive drive and for me it was hands-down Paul Di Resta. Just awesome from a rookie around singapore in a force india.

      1. If people were basing this on the result of races then Vettel would have already been DOTW 8 times. He’s only been DOTW ONCE and that was only in the last race.

    38. Vettel for me.

Almost 50 seconds faster than his team mate over the entire race says it all really.

    39. Hamilton has never been in a midfield car unlike everyone else in F1. if there is anyone who needs to prove anything, it would be hamilton. A lot of hamilton fans like to argue that vettels car is the reason why he is no1. Well, I could say the same for hamilton, unless I see him drive a midfield car and see if he could win it just as vettel has, he is an ordinary driver to me.

        1. Considering Vettel’s cars in 2007 and 2008, it’d be best for Vettel and Hamilton fans to draw a line and consider that they have both done very well with their cars when challenging for the title and not challenging for it.

    40. Vettel. Maybe next year we could rank 1, 2 and 3 and give 3, 2, 1 points accordingly. Or something similarly complicated. In which case, DiResta 2, Button 3.

      1. Or 25, 18, 15

        ;-)

        The fans championship.

    41. Vettel caause he made it look so effortless. So much so that I really just don’t notice him that much.

Button so super pushing to the end. Never give up. Brilliant. Ordinarily this drive by button would be be not just driver of the weekend but something more memorable and special.

    42. Another faultless performance from Vettel, just as we have come to expect from him this season. Even when Button was closing late in the race I think Vettel was only managing the car until the chequered flag and could have gone faster if required to do so.

But it was also a good race from di Resta for his best result so far especially considering his problems in practice meaning he got no heavy fuel running in.

Overall because I have come to expect that sort of drive from Vettel and di Resta still being a rookie I decided to give it to di Resta in the end.

    43. Pérez was the best, by making Schumacher taste a bit of his own medicine!
