Narain Karthikeyan will drive Vitantonio Liuzzi’s car at HRT.

Stewards

The track

Suzuka, 2011 Japanese Grand Prix

Suzuka was an instant hit with many drivers when it first appeared on the Formula 1 calendar in 1987.

Little has changed since then and it’s only been missing from the calendar twice, in 2007 and 2008, when the Japanese Grand Prix was temporarily relocated to the vastly inferior, Hermann Tilke-reworked Fuji Speedway.

The fast, flowing, compact designs gives drivers little margin for error as Jenson Button explains: “You can’t make a mistake because it’s not asphalt in a lot of places, so you touch grass or you’re into the gravel, you can end your day early.

“It’s very unforgiving in terms of stopping the car. It’s not unforgiving in terms of having a big accident, so the safety is not an issue here but I think we find it exciting knowing that if we do make a mistake then we get punished for it and that’s why a lot of drivers really enjoy racing around here.”

The weather

It can rain heavily in Suzuka – it did last year and qualifying had to be postponed. But it’s expected to stay dry this year.

  1. Rise and shine for Suzuka it is!

    1. I love early starts!

      1. @daykind I always tell myself I’ll have an early night, never happens. It’s like being a kid at Christmas again though :D

  2. Opposite the photo “2010 Japanese Grand Prix in pictures” I think you meant 2010 (not 2011) in the 3rd and 4th paragraphs?

    1. Changed it, thanks.

  3. Great! Now, I’ll have to go to bed early for the next three days, so I won’t miss FP2, qualifying, and the race :)

    1. @dan_the_mclaren_fan I will, because they start very early:
      FP1: 3am
      FP2: 7am*
      FP3: 4am
*I could see that but I have to go to school, so no time to turn the PC on! I’ll see qualifying and race though.

  4. Quali is the same time as the Irish rugby match :(

    1. @PJTierney The race this year has clashed with the WRC Power Stage so many times. You’d think two FIA sanctioned sports would get their heads together over that, considering the WRC is desperately in need of more spectator interest.

  5. Loving the new site, congratulations. Gonna stay up to watch FP1, and maybe even FP2 if I’m feeling wild. Student life, I’m gonna miss it soon.

  6. 40 minutes and counting…

  7. Lol, my girlfriend isn’t going to be happy about this, but I sure do love the early ones! :D
