Reserve drivers

The following changes to the usual driver line-up will be made for first practice only:

Narain Karthikeyan will drive Vitantonio Liuzzi’s car at HRT.

Karun Chandhok will drive Jarno Trulli’s car at Lotus.

Jean-Eric Vergne will drive Jaime Alguersuari’s car at Toro Rosso.

Tyres

Pirelli have brought the soft (yellow coloured) and super soft (red) tyres for this weekend’s event.

Stewards

Former F1 driver Martin Donnelly serves alongside the regular stewards this weekend. Donnelly competed in F1 in 1989 and 1990 before sustaining severe injuries in a crash at Jerez.

Garry Connelly and Jose Abed, who were stewards in Japan, continue in their roles in Korea.

The track

Korea International Circuit, 2011 Korean Grand Prix

Formula 1’s newest track – at least until we get to India – is a far cry from the sublime Suzuka the drivers raced on last week.

But compared to blander recent additions to the F1 calendar – Bahrain, Yas Marina – there seems to be a little more to this circuit. The last sector is especially tricky, closely bordered by barriers waiting to catch out any driver who strays off-line.

The opening part of the lap includes the requisite humongous straights, tight hairpins and correspondingly massive braking zones needed to promote overtaking.

Workers were still putting the finishes touches to the track as the teams arrived last year, and some kerbs and bumps had to be attended to after practice.

It was treacherously slippery last year even when it was dry. And although the surface has had 12 months to mature, the almost total lack of support races will not help increase the grip levels over the weekend.

The weather

Saturday and Sunday should stay dry, and the chance of rain on Friday is diminishing.

2010 Korean Grand Prix highlights

The inaugural Korean Grand Prix was spoiled by heavy rain and almost half the scheduled 55 laps were spent behind the safety car.

Sebastian Vettel led from pole position but the race ended in disaster for Red Bull. Mark Webber crashed out and Vettel retired ten laps from home with engine failure.

That opened the way for Fernando Alonso to win the race and take the lead in the championship.

  1. I really hope this race doesn’t disappoint because for me last year wasn’t very exciting. It might have been in part due to the fact I watched it later on iPlayer but there is no reason why we shouldn’t see the top 5 drivers all fighting for the win.

  2. Looking forward to what Ferrari can do on their preferred tyre.

It also looks great on their car.

I don’t like it @andrewtanner! I prefer the yellow or white lettering.
