In his tenth F1 start Ricciardo started ahead of one of the Virgins and passed the other at the first corner. But he slipped back behind them and his team mate over the course of the first lap, admitting: “There were a few moves that I should have maybe committed to a bit stronger.”

He passed Jerome D’Ambrosio on lap four and briefly got ahead of his team mate as the two Saubers came past them, only to lose the place again.

But he got back ahead of Liuzzi through the pit stops and – despite having made one more stop than his team mate – was still running ahead of his team mate when he retired with a broken alternator on his 49th lap.

Liuzzi was plagued by a suspension problem on Saturday and qualified half a second behind his team mate.

He suffered a repeat of the problem in the race and brought the car home last, two laps down.

    1. Good second stint from Ricciardo, in which he was consistently around 1.5s faster than his teammate on mediums, allowing him to make the extra stop and come out ahead. He seems to have the upper hand on Liuzzi now, and I hope it’s enough to convince the people at Red Bull to give him a drive at STR next year.

      1. @AdrianMorse I don’t think STR will sign Ricciardo up for 2012, tehy’ve got two good drivers in Alguesuari and Buemi, It’d be silly to let one of them go for Ricciardo in my opinion…

      2. But @adrianmorse, if you think about the fact Liuzzi made it through the race with a suspension problem, it rather shows how relative “beating your teammate” can be.

I guess both could do quite a lot better with a good car.

      3. I’d say bad second stint from Liuzzi :) Ricciardo did very well, I’m surprised at how Liuzzi has worsened since the start of the season.

    2. The STR boys seem to be closely matched now, so really hard for them to be replaced.
Would be great for Ricciardo if Williams gave him a seat alongside Raikkonen!

      1. @ivz Can’t see it happening but it would certainly help Williams financially.

    3. I liked the battle between Liuzzi and Ricciardo (although Liuzzi caused him and his team mate to be passed by both Saubers) ;)

    4. I wonder, with the money that Red Bull are putting into HRT, could we actually have some consistency with them next year? Ricciardo won’t be anywhere else next year and he could really do with the seat time.

    5. Its not such a bad idea. We all expect a new driver to become an overnight superstar but it takes time. He is young and talented.
