Pastor Maldonado |
Jean-Eric Vergne did not have to make a second pit stop when he switched to intermediate tyres on lap 70 – he had already used both dry-weather compounds.
After the race he said, “with around 14 laps to the end, my tyres were completely gone and I had to come in for the intermediates”.
His lap times from this point looks quite good – no worse than his team mate’s. However, he did struggle more than others when the rain fell around lap 68-72.
Had the rain come down harder, his switch would have looked like an inspired gamble. Instead their attempt to make virtue out of necessity backfired.

Sergio Perez became the sixth different driver to set fastest lap in as many races. The Sauber driver was over a second faster than anyone else.
This was partly a consequence of the drivers at the front conserving their tyres, usually because they were expecting a rain shower that only properly arrived after the chequered flag had fallen.

wow that is a massive margin between the fastest and second. can anyone say what the record is for the difference in fastest lap?

I think in terms of percentage, yes.

Germany 1999, Coulthard’s fastest lap was two seconds faster than the third fastest and a second and half almost than Panis with the second. On the old track but percentages would be similar if not higher.

Sergio demonstrates what happens when you drive fast on these tyres.
The promoters of these tyres say that the best teams and drivers will learn how to best use the tyres, they are right, the best teams and drivers have learned how to use these tyres and yesterdays race is the result. Expect to see more of this kind of procession.

Mark Webber (2010) RBR-Renault Q1 – 1:15.035 Q2 – 1:14.462 Q3 – 1:13.826
Mark Webber (2010) RBR-Renault personal fastest lap on 63rd lap — 1:15.318
Mark Webber (2012) RBR-Renault Q1 – 1:16.013 Q2 – 1:15.035 Q3 – 1:14.381
Mark Webber (2012) RBR-Renault personal fastest lap on 45th lap — 1:18.805
The gap between personal fastest lap and Q3 time set for Webber in 2010 was about 2 seconds, now on the same gap in 2012 is about 4 seconds.
Clearly shows that the Mark could have gone faster on those tires but held back knowing that they would go off and mean another pit stop. Likewise Hamilton too could have gone faster to protect his position from Vettel but i’m not sure had he done that would his tires lasted till the end. As Paul di Resta suggested that they could not have done 2 pit stops at Bahrain if they opted to run the car in Q3 as it would have meant three laps on the tire. The tire conservation is getting ridiculous in my opinion, but i’m not sure bridgestone era is the way to go either.

The ‘fastest laps’ article is always one of my favourites (though judging by the number of comments, I’m in a minority), as I’m interested in what each driver was doing in different parts of the race, and during the race itself you don’t have the time to study the timing screen all the time, for all drivers. For instance, what wasn’t that apparent to me during the race was just how shocking Webber’s first laps on the soft tyre were. Three 1m21s laps, followed by one 1m19s, then three 1m20s, even though he was doing 1m19s laps as early as lap 15 on softer but older tyres, and with more fuel onboard. I had expected them to go straight to 1m18s on the soft tyre and stay there, but that didn’t happen at all.
At this point I must confess I don’t really understand tyre-warmup problems. If your tyres are not getting enough heat, can’t you simply push them harder? Or is the challenge to warm them up without damaging them too much? And on a not quite related note: I don’t understand either how you lose tyre temperature; in Malaysia, Button was very quick on his inters the first lap after his nose change, but he started to lose tyre temperature as soon as he hit traffic. Don’t tyres get warmer if you get close to another car, as you have to push them harder to make up for the loss in downforce (isn’t that why everyone is complaining that you can’t follow other cars with the Pirelli tyres)?
Back to the Monaco Grand Prix, I think I’m not the only one left wondering what Perez could have done in Monaco if he had qualified in Q3, as I’m sure he could have. If he could do a 1m17.3 with 30 laps of fuel in the car and without DRS, then… well I’m not sure how much time that is worth actually, but he looked pretty quick to me. Also, if Perez had been in that train of 5 leaders at the end, the evidence from the race suggests that he would have tried something.

@adrianmorse This.
Couldn’t agree with you more, and yes I think we’re in the minority on this. I see the driver laptimes as the final (and major piece) in the evaluation of a person’s race. Too often do people not look at the charts, and just say driver X did awesome, or terrible. God I love the lap times haha! Although, I couldn’t really care less about the fastest laps of the race.

He may have set the fastest lap but his times were all over the place! I guess you can attribute that to traffic?

Perfect example of why the current tire situation is such a joke!
Sure, the championship is up in the air but if the Sauber can easily take out 1½ seconds from the top runners, it should be clear to any three year old how detrimental to racing this situation is! The drivers can no longer afford to fight for position because it will effectively bring them across the finish line much later.
“You have to maintain a lap time of 1:22:00 to maintain your tires.” NOT COOL !!!
F1 has become the shortest endurance race in history!
