Mark Webber, Red Bull, Buddh International Circuit, 2012Mark Webber lost second place after suffering a KERS glitch on his car. The damage it did to his car’s performance can be seen from around lap 45 on the graph below.

“It?s maybe hard for people watching to know what it affects on the car,” he said. “It’s power on the straight obviously, but also managing brake balances and those sort of things.”

“The guys were trying to help me get the KERS to recover and were talking with me on the radio. In addition, when you have a one-stop race, it?s always a chance you have a front-right lock up.

“As the fronts are very important you need to look after them which can affect the rhythm a little bit, but I tried to stay as cool as possible.”

After being passed by Fernando Alonso, Webber came under pressure from Lewis Hamilton, but had enough to hold the Mclaren driver off until the end.

Another driver struggling with a KERS problem was Heikki Kovalainen. “I had a good stop but about two thirds of the way through the race I had a KERS problem which meant I had to let Vitaly [Petrov] pass,” he said.

It was not a good day for Lotus. Kimi Raikkonen spent every lap of the race starting at Felipe Massa’s rear wing: “I had a very good car today but I just couldn?t do anything with it as I was not able to pass on the straight.

“It was quite disappointing but that?s how it goes. We put ourselves in that position yesterday with the set-up we chose for qualifying and we paid the price today. We had the speed but not in the right place and when you are behind someone there?s not much you can do.”

Romain Grosjean was in a similar situation with Nico Hulkenberg at the end of the race. He was also delayed earlier in the race as trackside operations director Alan Permane explained: “Romain was held up for around four laps whilst Michael (Schumacher) received blue flags ahead of him.”

However the stewards decided Grosjean hadn’t been close enough to Schumacher to be held up by him, and did not penalise Schumacher.

Oh my, Schumacher! I don’t want to look at that graph. The first part of the season looked so promising for you, but now …

  2. I’m starting to get used to Vettel just being a flat line at the bottom of these graphs! This just shows how much quicker Vettel was as the others started to struggle on the soft tyres; that’s where he got his gap. Interesting to see how both McLaren’s were consistently fastest on the hard compound, if they could have had that pace on the soft tyre Vettel may have had a fight on his hands!

  3. Sadly for Narain Karthikeyan his graph touches new heights!!!

If Kimi had a good car, they should have tried something different than follow Felipe closely for the entire duration of the race. If after 10 or so laps it would become apparent that it would be difficult to pass, he could have (for instance) dropped back a second or two, saved his tyres, and then come back at him at the end of the stint. By that time, Felipe was losing quite a lot of time (around 2 seconds a lap to Vettel), so with a good car on tyres with a little life in them, he should have been able to pass somewhere, or just run longer. It’s not the first time Kimi has complained this year about the impossibility of overtaking, but others seem to manage just fine.

If Kimi had a good car

But he didn’t. And it’s his fault. After quali he said he asked the engineers to change something in the setup for Q3 and that made the Lotus lose almost all its grip and meant he had to stick with it for the duration of the race as well. It was his decision and it was a wrong one. And it wasn’t the only one. Not stealing sixth from Massa after the pit stops could also be inputed to him, not being patient enough and attacking the before the DRS zone.

It’s true that his Lotus being dead last in the speed traps didn’t help but I’m afraid it was “misjudgement weekend” for Kimi anyway. Every driver has one once in a while…

Is it a reflection upon Ricciardo’s (great) performance or Kobayashi’s (poor) performance that the latter was kept behind by the former?

    • nackavich (@nackavich) said on 29th October 2012, 7:32

@oblong_cheese The Toro Rosso was basically the quickest in a straight line so that helped. There have been a few times this season that Ricciardo has gotten his car further up the grid and has had to defend pretty hard from faster cars, so he’s had some practice at it!

Aw, I thought Petrov finished above Kovalainen on merit.
