An exciting battle for the lead was developing between Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso in the closing stages of the Australian Grand Prix.
The Ferrari driver made his final pit stop five laps later than the Lotus, and gained rapidly on the leader after returning to the track.
But shortly after passing Adrian Sutil, Alonso’s progress slowed and then reversed. In the final five laps the gap between him and Raikkonen doubled. Further back Sebastian Vettel’s lap times had also dropped off.
Last year’s Lotus was one of the better cars for tyre management and it seems the E21 is as well.
It is in Raikkonen’s hands at least. Team mate Romain Grosjean made three visits to the pits and was clearly struggling for pace at the end.

For the second race in a row a Force India led at one point. Adrian Sutil spent 11 laps in the lead on his return to F1.
But having left his super-soft tyre stint until the end of the race Sutil struggled for grip in the closing stages. He was passed by Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber in one lap. Team mate Paul di Resta then caught him quickly but was ordered not to overtake his team mate.

I don’t really understand why Di Resta was told not to pass Sutil at the end. To me it shows a complete lack in trust of there drivers to race each other fairly. I must say, if I was Paul, I would have ignored the instruction.

Worn tyres, cool conditions, track a bit damp here and there and a battle for a position that didn’t matter so much.
On one hand, I agree with you, this shows a level of uncertainty when it comes to a team and its drivers. On the other hand, Force India were in for a big points haul there while their main rivals (Torro Rosso, Sauber and Williams) all hit trouble / were struggling more or less at the other end of the field. It’s only sensible for a midfield team to act in its best interest and not be willing to take even the slightest risk that would jeopardize their effort. It wasn’t favourizing Sutil over Di Resta or anything of that nature. They were just over-cautious, I believe.

Depends how you look at it. As a mark of respect to Sutil, who up till then had driven an amazing race. If he had have stayed out longer, it could have been so much better. But they didn’t know that at the time. It’s quite possible that the team managers felt sorry for Sutil, given that in the end, it was a strategy error that led to his problem.

How was Paul’s race any less amazing? He’d arrived at the same point on the track at the same time, surely that make it just as amazing.
The fact that Sutil had been ahead for the entire race was purely down to the fact that he’d run Mediums first, while Paul had got his Super Soft stint out of the way, and had fallen back during it (much like sutil).
Mike (@mike)
18th March 2013, 3:37
Because if the SS had lasted longer, or they had of pitted Sutil later, Paul wouldn’t have been at the same point.
Force India, in hindsight, made a mistake. Although his softs were going off, it was better than how the softs reacted.

Button’s and Grosjean’s time behind leader is almost identical, why was Grosjean so slow and unable to overtake in a winning car?
Jake (@jleigh)
17th March 2013, 13:07
Grosjean didn’t have the latest parts on his car until Saturday, so didn’t have a chance to work on his set-up. He then had a bad start and I’m guessing he just got stuck in the midfield.

On top of that, didn’t Kimi say it was important for him to get out in front and stay out of the pack, implying that it makes a large difference if you are able to run in clear air as opposed to running in a pack if you want to keep the tyres alive.
zippyone (@zippyone)
17th March 2013, 13:24
Ah, didn’t realise he did not have the latest parts and yes running in dirty air is a disadvantage, not sure if he did have a go at Jenson, or not? Don’t recall seeing it.
Candice

he had the latest parts. and he said on Sat, the setup is perfect to his liking.
other than that was just pure excuse. Unable to pass Jenson in a struggling mclaren…really?

Yes, there is a reason why he kept 2 sec gap to a car in front while everyone else in front were chasing each other down every corner.

Indeed.. Either Bianchi is really fast or Chilton is really slow.
I have a feeling he might make a move midway through the season to the mid field. My bet is he would move to Force India replacing Paul.

Alonso and Hamilton totally wrecked their tyres after last pit-stops, hence Hamilton could not make a two stopper work.

Alonso’s race pace was amazing for about 4 laps, when he was taking 2 seconds/lap out of Raikkonen. Then he got the best out of the tyres, and backmarkers halted his momentum. This was crucial to determine the outcome of the race IMO. We might’ve seen a battle for the lead otherwise.

Actualy Kimi had backmarkers to pass at that stage, it looked good but when Alonso caught up the same backmarkers he also suffered from them.
Kimi was in total control.

Wow, @keithcollantine, the FIA just tweeted a link to this page with a FIA lap chart, you think they finally understood that giving more information is good and if FOM doesn’t do so, then they should?.

There has been a lap chart on the formula1.com site in the live timing (archive) for ages.
Looks like FIA is sharing less info to the general public though. Where are the complete laptime sheets, scruteneering reports (tests done, engine changes) and such?

What a detailed analysis. Very cool.
Might I ask where you get the data? I’ve been searching for detailed lap by lap times but can’t find it.
