Kimi Raikkonen on the Chinese Grand Prix (Lotus)

“It was racing and that’s what we’re all here for. There were a few times where it got pretty close. There are things you should and shouldn’t do but this is racing and at the end of the day I don’t think it changed our result too much.”

Finance ministry orders probe against Mallya, others for ‘tax evasion’ (The Times of India)

Comment of the day

Yesterday was 45 years since Jim Clark passed away – here’s thoughts from @Bullmello:

Clark was best. Almost never do I utter or type such words, but Clark was best. On the race track and off there are seldom a better race car driver or gentleman. Jim Clark is the reason I became interested in Formula One.

As a young boy in America who followed the Indy 500 every year I became fascinated with Jim Clark and interested in what other races he drove in. Viewing F1 then was usually done some time after the race in the form of highlights.

Still became fascinated with F1 and over the years viewing got better. Would I be a fan of F1 had it not been for the accomplishments of the likes of Jim Clark, Mario Andretti, Dan Gurney and others with their race anywhere anytime attitudes? Who knows. 45 years later I still thank you, Jim Clark. Clark was best.

  1. small round-up or an issue?

    1. I guess theres just not much news . Keith always does a fantastic job :) but if there’s not much happening then there’s not much to report.

      1. Not complaining, it’s just that the daily round-up always tend to include many interesting pieces besides there was racing aplenty this weekend.

        1. there was racing aplenty this weekend

And none of it related to Formula 1.

          1. That is exacly why I said that the daily round-up usually includes many interesting pieces.

  2. So McLaren have a better simulator then?

    1. Seems like it. Pat Fry was and De La Rosa have also mentioned it before that the Mclaren simulator was leagues above the rest

      1. I believe Lewis Hamilton stated this as well

    2. Yeah, they have fluffy dice and a nodding dog and everything.

  3. Who is Coggin and who really cares about that petulantly boring tweet?

    1. Rosberg’s race engineer.

      1. In that case I understand – it must be a real drag winning your driver’s first race.

        1. Maybe the stress of it gets to him (or it was meant as a joke) :-)

      2. He is actually Nico Hulkenberg’s engine technician.

work in formula one as Nico Hulkenbergs engine technician

        1. ah, then it makes a bit more sense!

          1. Haha, I must say that it does now.

            Thanks.

  4. @keithcollantine – I appreciate the COTD on the JimClark comment. Means a lot to me.

    1. @bullmello, well deserved COTD, I feel very much the same, 45 years ago the news shocked me, I knew F1 drivers died, but surely not Clark, I thought him immortal, so fast but so in control.

      1. @hohum – Thanks, same thoughts I had about Clark.

  5. “Rajya Sabha member and chief of ailing Kingfisher airline Vijay Mallya, top industrialists and Lok Sabha member Vivekananda Kadam and those who figure in the list of names exposed by a global media investigative operation are being probed for alleged tax evasion.”

I imagine that this will end much like the last time prosecutors pushed Mallya: with the money magically appearing at the last possible moment and the charges being dropped swiftly and discreetly.

That said, this investigation into offshore accounts for tax evasion makes for fascinating reading.

    1. Yes, its a very good thing journalists uncovered a lot of it in a good piece of investigative journalism.

I think that Mallya will likely be an Non Resident of India for tax purposes, that is one of the reasons for his yacht, I gather.

  6. Pretty good interview with Kimi, it shows that what they say in the heat of the moment in the car is not always what they make of it after having a bit of time to look at it (about the intense fight on track with Hulkenberg).

The part I think is most significant though is this:

We had the race pace in 2012, that’s true, but we tried to carry on with our tyres for too long. They dropped off, and that was it. On the other hand without trying to push with those tactics, we would never have been fighting for top positions. If you look at last year we didn’t have a bad car for China, and if we get the car working as well as we did on Friday at Sepang, we should do well in Shanghai too.

After all, that is exactly it. Either you take a couple of risks, and they might pay off or backfire, or you want to play it save and feel you have not been pushing all race. Isn’t that what sport is about too, finding the limit of yourself and your material?

  7. Interesting piece about possible tax avoidance, although I found it pretty hard to understand some of it. It seems one key issue might be weather the people involved are residents or Non-Residents of India (thats what the NRI acronym stands for), and it seems the finance minister is already saying that his office thinks the matter is not as serious as reported.

  8. Hulkenberg bang kimi when he tried to overtook him with a already uncontrollable car due to broken front wing.

Hulkenberg already violated the single lane rule.

Nvr cease to amuse me how Kimi never really blame anyone for anything that had happened.

    1. Hulkenberg already violated the single lane rule.

How? Seeing as the stewards had no problem with it I’m wondering what yours was.

      1. Team to driver: “Dont worry, everyone saw that, we are talking to Charlie”

        1. yes, and then nothing happened, which does as much to prove that neither Charlie Whiting nor the stewards saw anything wrong. It could just as well have been the teams way of calming Kimi down by taking this matter away from his mind.

    2. “Hulkenberg bang kimi when he tried to overtook him with a already uncontrollable car due to broken front wing.”
So, because Raikkonens wing isn’t working properly Hulkenberg shouldn’t be defending his line anymore?

“Nvr cease to amuse me how Kimi never really blame anyone for anything that had happened.”
He does blame Hulkenberg, he just says it doesn’t matter as it is part of racing.
