2013 Bahrain Grand Prix

Kimi Raikkonen, Lotus, Bahrain International Circuit, 2013Kimi Raikkonen’s chances of winning the race with a two-stop strategy suffered a blow when he was passed by the two McLaren drivers on the second lap of the race.

Raikkonen spent the next eight laps staring at the back of a McLaren while he lost over five seconds to leader Sebastian Vettel.

Although Vettel ultimately finished nine seconds ahead of the Lotus, without the time lost Raikkonen might have been able to jump in front of Paul di Resta sooner an apply more pressure to the Red Bull.

Mark Webber ran a three-stop strategy but at the end of the race he regretted having made his first stops early to gain track position as he began to struggle with his tyres. Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez passed him on the last lap.

But his team mate Vettel clearly had a little something in reserve as he produced the race’s fastest lap on the 55th tour, pulling a further two seconds away from his pursuers in doing so.

That 9 sec gap was not representative at all.

Rocky kept telling Seb to calm down and hit the target of 1.39…..1.38….

After he did 1.36 to earn the FL, he immediately slow down and hit the target again.

Kimi and Lewis both suffered weird issues on the start, the tyre simply not working. However, after the 1st stint, both of them recovered the pace. Presumably the track temperature play its part.

Sometime i wonder….this is not racing anymore. Simply a sitting duck when the tyre wasnt switch on in favorably circumstance.

Aside from at the very front, we saw more good battles for position in Bahrain than we have done for a long time, so what’s the problem?

Is it just that the teams that have built cars which are kind on their tyres, like Lotus, regularly make it into the high points-scoring positions without having the fastest car?

If so, I can’t say I understand the argument. I’m sure Lotus could build a car that’s faster over one lap if they wanted to, but they can see it’s not worth doing so. Once every team realises that, then there’ll be more of a level playing field once again, and we’ll be back to “real” racing. Or – and this is probably more likely – we’ll be back to processional driving with DRS providing the only opportunity for overtaking.

I’d rather have the current situation than that one. Aside from the occasional non-runners in qualifying, I think the tyre arrangement is working just fine right now.

Adrian Sutil went from 81.3 seconds behind the leader on lap 2 to 76.6 seconds behind at the flag. Impressive, even if he had new tyres on lap 2 and Vettel was on used mediums. Therefore, I cannot help thinking that DiResta, as good as his fourth place looks, should have been on the podium yesterday, especially with all drivers in front of him (bar Vettel) falling by the wayside in some way or another.

@adrianmorse I’m not usually one to defend di Resta, but I do wonder if Sutil wasn’t in clear air for more of the race, which made him faster in relative terms. In any event, stunning pace from the Force Indias, they have been the surprise of the season for me.

In the first 26 laps, Hamilton lost 29 secs. From Lap 27 til the end he lost 6 secs. Clearly something perked up on the Merc

  4. Rooney (@rojov123) said on 22nd April 2013, 22:01

So, Sutil finished the race 5 seconds faster than Sebastian Vettel? I mean, he was 81 seconds down at the first lap, and at the end of the race, he was only 76 seconds down. Kinda puts things in perspective of how horrible the race must have been for him. Having a potentially podium possible car and yet having to languish for most of the race behind the back markers.. Sucks to be him, I guess.

Just compared VDG vs PIC, wow. In my oppinion they should get rid of VDG asap. Sponsor money is one thing. But there must be a driver out there delivering decent sponsoring too, while not being beaten by 140sec (lapped by his teammate!?).

    • Mike Dee (@mike-dee) said on 22nd April 2013, 22:43

VDG’s car broke on lap 1

      • Matthijs (@matthijs) said on 23rd April 2013, 7:35

Correct. There are plenty reasons to believe that VDG is a mediocre driver, just don’t use this GP as proof. Quite a big collision in first lap (while he was ahead of Pic btw), 5 pitstops compared to three, deflating tyre, no updates etc etc.

That does not imply that VDG must not step up his game in the European GPs.

You can see how quick Rosberg was on the last stint…put this and Hamilton’s comments together and it seems obvious the Mercedes is much better on high fuel.

  7. lubhz (@lubhz) said on 23rd April 2013, 11:58

Grosjean’s second half of the race is impressive, lapping consistently faster than the leaders.
