Sebastian Vettel set the fastest lap during the Bahrain Grand Prix.
The next quickest driver was Adrian Sutil who had a lonely race after dropping back following contact with Felipe Massa on the first lap.
The slowest lap time from a driver who completed the race belonged to Toro Rosso’s Daniel Ricciardo. “All afternoon we just struggled with speed,” he said afterwards.
“In the first stint, tyre warm-up was a problem and I was losing a lot of time on braking. We never really recovered, even though we tried to make a few changes to the balance of the car at the pit stops. We must look into what exactly was wrong with the car as we were really limited in terms of downforce.”

so Adrian Sutil 2nd fastest lap. Really unlucky for him to be hit by Massa. Could have been faster than Paul?

Judging by the graphs, it does look like Sutil ran a little quicker than DiResta. For instance in their second stints, Sutil seemed to be around a second a lap quicker, although of course it doesn’t show what kind of traffic both were in. He mut have lost a lot of time on the first lap to be completely out of contention for the rest of the race.

@adrianmorse yeah he did lose a lot of time. He slid to the back of the grid right at the second corner….It looked like he was in reverse gear :P

Just goes to show how strong the Force India really is right now. They are quite capable of mixing with the big teams.

Wow, Di Resta’s lap times from L38 to L55 were all within half a second! If that’s not consistency, I don’t know what is.

And yet, adrian was consistently faster than di resta. Well, except for lap one when he decided to take a scenic tour of the circuit and stopped to buy tacos at turn 6.

But Sutil also looses time due to the fact that of the 2 stoppers his pitstops are late in the race. This means that he is loosing time in all the laps he drive between, say Di Restas pitstop and his own, where he is slower. Try and compare Di Resta, Raikkonen and Sutil.

With a stronger third stint, Grosjean could have been closer to his team mate yesterday. I think the team ran the medium tyre on his car for the final two stints, but a set of hards would have suited him better, though I suppose he had no new sets left.
Kimi was definitely employing the tortoise strategy today, and it worked well for him. He was rarely very quick, but he managed to stay out of traffic (in particular, the Rosberg – Button – Perez – etc. battle that everyone seemed to get caught up in) and he could drive his own race. I wonder whether he could have done much quicker lap times had he opted for an extra stop, or whether he and the Lotus are simply good at doing moderately quick lap times over a long stint.
And I’m sorry to say Webber was completely outshone by his team mate again yesterday. He may have used up too much of his tyres in the first two stints, but his third stint (where I do not think he had a lot of traffic) was quite poor, especially compared to Vettel’s stints. Perhaps Sebastian is better at managing rear tyre degradation than Mark, and at a place like this it shows.

Nope. Grosjean had plenty of new fresh tyres. I think the team opted medium tyres because of his strong 3rd stint.
And kimi already decided to run two stopper on friday, thats why the team change the setup to maximize pace on prime tyres which ultimately cost them qualification on medium tyres.

Grosjean started on hards, then switched to hards at the first pit stop, after which he had no new sets of hards left, assuming he ran a set in Q1. He did have two new sets of mediums, though.

Hamilton’s car really did transform.. After the 2nd pitstops he was matching Vettel almost.. Of course Vettel’s last stint is him holding back though. Stil…

What happened to di Resta in Stint 3? Did he pick up a hitchhiker? Hamilton’s last stint is quite impressive, espeically considering how much of hit he spent dealing with Webber. But it was only as impressive as his second stint was lousy. Jeckyll and Hyde car.

Flops of the race.
1. Ferrari.
Alonso DRS failure and Massas rear wheel puncture. That cost lots of points for the team.
2. Webber.
Again lost his teammate over 30s. With same strategy.
3. McLaren
Fight against your teammate looks stupid. If your racing in different strategy, why not pass the faster driver go. Perez maybe lost one place for that and lost frontwing.
Tops of the race.
3. Lotus.
Even catastrophic Saturday starting at 8 and 11, they finished both in podium 2 and 3.
2. Vettel.
Dominate that race like a champ.
1. Force India speed.
Sutil and Di Resta show that that car is quick. Awesome.

@keith: Thanks for all the good work with these data. I know it takes some time to make, but a suggestion: Would it be possible to add Tyre data to the lap time sheets? When I isolate some drivers to look at their stints, stability of their laps, compare with overtakes etc. it would be nice to be able to see which tyre they were running in each stint. It could maybe be done by making it possible to add a Letter of info to each data point in the graph, i.e. another column to the data set, indicating the Tyre used at this data point. It should then be possible for us to select this data to and from.
