  1. Hats off to Nico and Giedo, superb effort from those two.

Tut tut tut Di Resta and Gutierrez.

    1. How come future champion of the world Paul Di Resta is in 17?!!! This is all wrong because he is the best driver in the grid, I call for the quali to be reapeated

I’m sure people used to laugh at the idea of Jenson winning the WDC…

        1. Yeah maybe, but in this case I´m like Saint Thomas, I will believe it when I see it

    2. It’s not entirely fair to blame Di Resta, there was a bit of a strategy error but indeed it wasn’t a fantastic performance!

    3. Kimi is keeping his form by staying a step away from the front and the chance to beat Vettel once again for the championship.

Good qualy performance from the Mercedes once again, but I can’t help but feel that it’ll be Red Bulls race tomorrow.

    1. GP2 showed us that some clear track can make all the difference. I suppose to overtake ROS or HAM they would need to pit early for the undercut.

      1. The problem with that is @Joshua-mesh, the Merc’s usually need to pit first and when in good position and allowed to go flat out, they make something out of it. China this year for example.

    2. It’ll come down to who goes for the undercut I think.

  3. The TV director was just terrible this weekend. The most frantic final minutes and they are showing us TV cams of cars on outlaps when they could be showing us the guys who are pushing for laps.

    1. Yeah Will Buxton said during the GP2 race that in Monaco, some local company does the cameras as opposed to every other race which is done by the same people. Stupid

      1. What really crossed the line for me was when Alonso went out early to do his final run and the commentator said that there’s a slow Button ahead of him. The TV director then switched to Rosberg who was crawling around the circuit on an outlap and so we never saw what happened between Alonso and Button, and why Alonso had to abort his first flier.

    2. It was the removal of the timing that annoyed me the most: they cut it from the screen at the end of Q2 exactly when we needed to see the times! Ah it’s infuriating.

      1. Exactly, why on Earth did they think that was a good idea?

that’s why you should use the official F1 live timing…i didn’t miss anything!!

    3. Just unacceptable: lots of us or paying big money for good coverage, and then to be presented with this!?

      1. @andae23 we need to complain to FOM, not the individual broadcasters though.

        1. The broadcasters are responsible for the video quality – so I don’t agree with that

          1. @andae23 what do you mean by that? They get FOM’s coverage regardless, unless you are implying by the picture quality itself, in which case I thought Sky’s was still rather good anyway for me!

It was just the director’s cuts that were fairly terrible, which is FOM’s responsibility.

          2. @vettel1 Sorry, I meant director’s cut. (my bad :P)

But anyway, the broadcaster offers their customers a certain quality and to be honest today wasn’t up to standard. So in a way, the broadcaster is responsible for this.

          3. I think it all stems from the quite useless director though honestly @andae23 because I thought Sky UK were actually rather good, along with the usual race control (which I didn’t use in qualifying but in practice)!

  4. Great qualifying session :D Excitement all the way through, and a result that sets up a very interesting start for tomorrow’s race. Shame about Jenson’s mechanical issues though, especially as it seemed like he would have gone faster.

    1. Yeh, Hamilton didn’t look overjoyed did he? I also like the way sky desperately try and mention him in their monologues when talking about Rosberg getting pole. I’ll hold out until the end of the year on the Lewsi vs Rosberg battle but certainly in qualy Rosberg has done a better job recently. Also puts the Schums performance into perspective from last year, he was no slouch was he?

      1. This comment was meant for @tdog below.

  5. So much for those who said Hamilton would eat Rosberg this year. 3 consecutive poles, stunning effort.

    1. It’s just a confirmation of Nico’s abilities. And what about Perez starting to leapfrog Button?

  6. That might have been the best qualifying session I’ve ever seen! I was annoyed when it started raining beforehand but it made the first 2 sessions exciting and it still ended up for a dry Q3.

Well done to Rosberg and VDG. Time to see if the Mercedes can capitalise on this.

so… WIN IT for goodness sake Nico!

  8. I feel that Mercs going to get gobbled up in race tomorrow.

    1. We saw in GP2 you cant even pass a car thats going 3 seconds slower than you.

      1. thats in GP2. F1 is another world and with a super aggressive Vettel off the line the first few laps could be awesome.

        1. The turbulent air effect is much greater.

We saw last year Schumacher couldn’t pass Raikkonen ever when lapping almost 5 seconds/lap quicker.

  9. What a fantastic qualifying session! I am looking forward in particular to see what Van Der Garde and Massa can do from their respective positions – this is a pretty good chance for a Caterham points score if there are a few retirements (perhaps at the start) and by keeping track position maybe by starting on the softs.

  10. Now it is time to quote Nico Rosberg in Malaysia: “Remember this one” :)

    1. Why are people saying that minutes after qualifying? lol, are you that threatend by Lewis? atleast wait and see what happens as the lights go out before trying to decide the positions of both drivers, Rosberg could have a terrible start for all you know, and what, Lewis is expected to wait for him on the start line?

Qualifying only gave Rosberg a couple of meters on the road, it dosnt entitle him to the win. If he can make a good start and lead comfortably early in the first stint, then it maybe another story.

      1. You’ve read far too much into it: I’m sure @caci99 ‘s point was that team orders were imposed against who now is looking like more than a match for Hamilton, although in a joking sense!

    Bloody rain.
Still, very impressed with their ability to get into the 1:13.9’s given the conditions.

    1. Bloody rain indeed. I think they could have gone very close to 1.12 if it had been super dry!
Would have been the fastest pole lap for sure!

      1. Chris (@tophercheese21)
        25th May 2013, 14:42

Yes, I was a bit skeptical that they at the notion that they could’ve broken the lap record, but seeing as those Nico and Lewis got into the high 13’s in those types of conditions, I think they really could have done it by a couple of tenths, if not made it into the high 12’s.

  12. think, for me, what this season of F1 has shown was that Schumacher lost little to none of his speed, and would have been champion in a better car. Rosberg is truly a top, top driver and especially a wonderful qualifer. Look at last year, Schumacher was faster than Rosberg at Monaco and now Rosberg gets pole. Well I guess it was great vindication Hamilton took Schumacher’s speed, because we really get a great comparison of how fast Rosberg is.

Hamilton’s fans used to say he could out drive any car given to him, but are now making excuses such as saying Hamilton needs time to get accustomed to his car, but I think this clearly gives us a perspective of how fast all of them really are. I, for one, think that all of them are top class drivers who have immense speed, and are closer to each other than we’d like to believe.

    1. *seat (not speed)

This has always been my opinion. Spectators like to create certain narratives around the drivers, narratives that would only work if the drivers were all in completely equal machinery. The truth is that the top drivers in Formula 1 are actually very well matched and that there is very little to choose between them. I genuinely believe that many of the drivers at the lower end of the grid would deliver much the same results as the drivers at the top end if they had their machinery.

Anyway, today’s qualifying was fantastic to follow on live timing but was a bit disappointing on television due to some terrible choices by the TV director. Tomorrow might end up being a procession but the proximity of the barriers always makes Monaco races a GLORIOUS procession. Looking forward to it.

      1. Yes, the field would be closer, but in the end, at least generally, the best drivers will end up at the best teams.

      2. I genuinely believe that many of the drivers at the lower end of the grid would deliver much the same results as the drivers at the top end if they had their machinery.

I doubt that. They have to actually prove themselves first, as the top drivers of today did when they were in lower machinery.

There is an awful lot of things to choose when it comes to salary…

    3. Hamilton’s fans used to say he could out drive any car given to him, but are now making excuses such as saying Hamilton needs time to get accustomed to his car

All drivers need time to get accustomed to a car. This is normal, and is not an excuse. And that does not mean they will have the edge over their team mate either. It just means they perform better. Why should Lewis be any different. As good as he is, he cannot perform miracles. Nico has been with the team for 3 years; so it should not be surprising that he is doing better than Lewis. And why should it be surprising if there is little between Lewis and Nico? Put Lewis, Alonso, Vettel, Kimi and Nico (new addition to he list), in the same car, and i doubt you will find much between them. It will be swings and roundabouts – as they say in England.

When Lewis out-performed Alonso in qualyfying during his debut season, no one started saying Alonso was overrated.

      1. Yes I agree with you, look at my post carefully, I concluded all of them are top class drivers. (:

Reason I posted this was because of the general opinion last year that Schumacher was losing it.

  13. Wow F1 Qualifying is better than the actual race nowadays !!!!!!

One of the rare times this year when F1 cars are running fast.

  14. 22. Felipe Massa* No time
    Ferrari
*Five-place grid penalty for gearbox change.

I think it’s safe to say that this wasn’t the best qualifying session Massa has had.

    1. but a good day to change the gearbox!

    2. @hotbottoms they had to rebuild the car of course after the crash, which is why he was last and had the gearbox change penalty (which is completely irrelevant now).

      1. @vettel1 I know, I was just trying to joke about Massa being last, having no time and on top of that a grid penalty. But yes, it’s true that I am a terrible comedian.

        1. @hotbottoms it’s true also I’m not the best at reading Internet sarcasm! A wink would help ;)

          Really though it’s a poor FP3!

    3. But wasn’t the gearbox destroyed with the accident? Why he should be penalized?

  15. I tuned in late for Q1, why didn’t Bianchi run?

    1. waited too long at the pit exit for the lights to turn green, engine failed on outlap.

      1. @mike-dee Okay, thanks

He’s gotta show his investors what their money is worth. Why not show prove it as a sabateur. Hehe XD

  16. I really hope the Mercedes don’t struggle tomorrow like previous races as Monaco is easier on the tyres

  17. I’m OK with these results…

    1. @alex-bxx Bernie, Charlie, Ross and Toto Wolff will be mighty relieved with your approval!!

  18. Very happy for Rosberg. I certainly didn’t expect him to do so well against Hamilton in qualifying.
I hope he wins tomorrow. I feel he deserves a victory in Monaco.

  19. Pretty happy with that, .026 off on my quali prediction

    25th May 2013, 14:44

What a lost opportunity for Williams! Maldonado had the potential to reach Q3 but something wrong happened. Maybe his team waited too long to put the correct tyres on him in the closing minutes of Q2!? He was a lot faster than Bottas and ended Q2 more than 2 seconds behind Van der Garde!

    1. Maldonado should be alot faster than Bottas given that it’s the first time ever Bottas is driving in Monaco and it’s his first season in F1. But yet again, Bottas out-qualifying Maldonado. Is it 4-2 atm during this season?

      1. Fernando Cruz
        25th May 2013, 19:05

I just wanted to know what happened with Maldonado in Q2. The car was not good enough, mainly in the dry, but how the hell did he got beaten by a Caterham by 2 seconds? As for Bottas he’s doing quite well, mainly given all circumstances, but I think that with a better car and normal conditions Maldonado would have beaten him almost everywhere in qualifying, which would be only normal even if the Finnish is the potential future champion Claire Williams says he is.

    2. I was shocked he wasn’t bumped out in Q1, let alone that he was fastest in that session. I love Maldonado a lot, but driving on a mixed or wet track isn’t his specialty at all.

Also, Valtteri “Hashtag #HashtagBOTTAS” Bottas is looking like the real deal as a driver so far. Why aren’t both of these guys driving a capable car this year?

  21. Probably the only chance McLaren have had until now to get a car in the top 5 on a track where grid position actually matters nowdays and they blow it. I don’t get how they are so good at this.

On the other hand quite happy that Rosberg is doing so good, always thought he had it in him. Now let’s see if Mercedes can hold the rest of the field up tomorrow!

  22. Third in a row 4 Nico…..nd he will not win race…that’s 4 sure….

  23. hoping for a lot of retirements up front tomorrow, hopefully marussia and/or caterham are going to score points!

    The best quali in ages!!
Everyone running on inters for 1 and a half sessions and then on to drys. And everyone able to turn laps right to the end of quali instead of worrying about having to conserve sets of tyres.
A perfect example as to why teams need to be allocated extra sets of tyres!!
