2013 Canadian Grand Prix

As the drivers lined up to take the start of the Canadian Grand Prix there was considerable doubt over how their tyres would perform over 70 laps of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

The preceding two days of practice had been disrupted by rain. Conditions for race say were dry and considerably warmer than they had been earlier in the week. Most drivers opted to start on the super-soft rather than the medium tyre.

Sebastian Vettel lined up on pole position ahead of Lewis Hamilton and – surprisingly – the Williams of Valtteri Bottas. Further back on the grid were Paul di Resta and Romain Grosjean in 17th and 22nd places, both of which had been eliminated during the wet Q1 session.

Here’s how the Grand Prix unfolded as heard in the 240 team radio messages broadcast during the race.

Lap*FromToMessage
PRGianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaThe only cars on medium tyres are Grosjean and the Marussias. You are the lead car on medium tyres.
FLPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonRS modes cancel and working the tyres and brakes as much as you can. We want to be boosting to 10% before you get to turn 11, really. So wherever you can you’re boosting to 10%.
FLTony RossNico RosbergRears are coming up, fronts still cool and if you could boost to 50 only.
FLAyao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanCool the car when you can.
FLUnknownSebastian VettelAll systems are good. Tyre warming as per plan. Remember your procedures, it’s bite point learn and one burn-out. Good clutch prep so straight to your box. Focus on KERS at the start and KERS eight when you stop.
FLSimon RennieMark WebberThis is a red start. React to the beep quickly and use KERS in gear two.
1Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonCancel RS, car behind is Nico [Rosberg].
1Max ChiltonGary GannonHow’s my tyre temperature?
1Gary GannonMax ChiltonFront minus 20, rears minus 10, keep building temp, it’ll come.
2Paul DavisonJules BianchiTry and follow Grosjean through if you can, mate.
2Mark TempleSergio PerezCan we have KERS F5 please.
2Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelPlus 2.5 Hamilton.
3Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanDRS is available.
3Tony RossNico RosbergJust caution on the left-rear bulk temperature.
3Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaGood lad, good boy, car in front is Perez.
4Paul DavisonJules BianchiFront zero, rear zero, tyres are good now.
4Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonTraction 1,700.
4Marco MatassaDaniel RicciardoRecovery three, Daniel.
5Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaSutil’s brake temps are high at this point in the race, Paul. Avoid pedal crossover if you can.
7Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergBrake balance plus one against rear lock.
7Tony RossNico RosbergTraction 1.9. Front brake temperatures slightly on the cool side, may cause some front locking.
7Simon RennieMark WebberKERS ten. If you cannot pass Rosberg think about looking after the tyres.
8Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeHey, what’s happening, my brake pedal is really really soft.
8Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenLooks like we have the same problem as Friday, you need to go forwards on the balance as much as you can.
8Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelWe need to keep the rear temps under control
8Nico HulkenbergMarco SchupbachRear is pretty loose.
8Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergCopy Nico, copy. A lot of people saying overheating rears. Special to ‘off’ for temperatures.
8Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaI think the medium tyre’s coming into it’s own at the moment, Paul.
8Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaTo manually use DRS we need to override it. That is default seven, six, accept, if you haven’t already done that.
8Paul di RestaGianpiero LambiaseIt’s working now.
9Sergio PerezMark TempleMy DRS isn’t working in the second part.
9Mark TempleSergio PerezWe think you pressed it too early so next time if it doesn’t deploy immediately come back off and press it again.
9Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaOK come on Paul, super-soft tyres are terrible, let’s get past these guys, we’re losing too much time.
10Adrian SutilBrad JoyceI really have no grip in the rear.
10Brad JoyceAdrian SutilPits this lap, pit confirm.
10Juan Pablo RamirezGiedo van der GardeWe need to take care of the rear tyres on the early laps. First few laps, take care of the rear tyres.
11Mark TempleSergio PerezCan we go back to Yellow G1 please. Currently P12, obviously there’s a good queue of cars in front, behind Bottas.
11Romain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuThey no stop move right and left.
11Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanOK, copy that.
12Brad JoyceAdrian SutilSutil was hit by Maldonado at the second hairpin.
You’ve got some damage to the rear wing so adjust diff and adjust brake balance as you need to to get over any oversteer you may have.
12Mark WebberSimon RennieMain problem’s at the front-left, mate, no front-left.
12Simon RennieMark WebberOK Mark, understood.
13Esteban GutierrezFrancesco NenciImpossible to keep position, it’s crazy.
13Francesco NenciEsteban GutierrezCopy, are the tyres dropping a lot?
13Esteban GutierrezFrancesco NenciYes
13Francesco NenciEsteban GutierrezCopy. We think it’s too early to pit now because you’ll be in traffic for the slow cars. Try to keep going a bit more, Esteban.
13Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonAnd you are on Plan A, it’s target plus two at the moment.
13Sergio PerezMark TempleI have really big deg on the [super-soft].
13Mark TempleSergio PerezOK, understood. Use the diff switches, A switch and B switch.
14Paul DavisonJules BianchiNot much we can do at the moment, Jules, we’re looking to one-stop.
14Tim WrightCharles PicYou can use torque three already if you want.
15Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaAs the drivers on super-softs start to struggle Di Resta’s plan to complete the race with one pit stop, having started on mediums, is looking good.
Data at the moment indicates plan A is a winner at the moment.
15Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaWhat do you think about the degradation now? You are just about to complete 14 laps.
15Felipe MassaRob SmedleyWell you can see the degradation is there on the rear. So everybody’s just how people anticipate.
16Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonWe want three to four laps at this pace.
16Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonI’m pushing.
16Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaFor your information Paul, Jenson is still out on his super-softs, potentially looking for a Plan A as well.
16Dave RobsonJenson ButtonAll the time we can do this pace we should stay out.
17Tony RossNico RosbergRemember just controlling rear these temperatures, casing temperatures are high to start, they’re close to the maximum per lap.
17Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonYou’re doing a great job. Nico four-tenths slow last lap, he’s currently holding up Webber.
17Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonKeep going, my tyres are feeling alright.
18Simon RennieMark WebberRosberg ahead is on [super-soft], he may struggle later in the stint. Think about looking after the tyres for later in this stint, he may be weak.
18Tony RossNico RosbergRear casing temperatures in danger zone at the moment
18Tony RossNico RosbergYou are P3 at the moment. Lewis has not stopped yet. Vettel has stopped on [medium], Webber on [medium].
19Jonathan EddollsValtteri BottasBottas switches from super-soft to medium tyres on lap 15 and keeps them on for 26 laps.
The target is 25 more laps on this set.
19Mark TempleSergio PerezWe’d like to try and just do one more stop in this race if we can. As I said the damage on the last set was traction, graining so we need to make sure we look after the tyres in that area.
19Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonWe’re going to the other tyre so box, box. Pit confirm
20Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaShortly after receiving this message Massa passes Gutierrez in the second DRS zone.
Gutierrez, who is the car in front, still hasn’t stopped so you should pass him easy.
20Jenson ButtonDave RobsonButton hangs on to his super-soft tyres until lap 27 – longer than anyone else. He then makes his single pit stop to change to medium tyres.
The tyre has gone through the graining, front and rear.
20Dave RobsonJenson ButtonOK Jenson, stay out, this is good.
21Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenAt the moment the plan is to go as long as we can.
21Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeOK, good.
21Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelEngine map 42.
22Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaYou are one second a lap faster than Sutil.
23Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenMix one, Kimi. Fuel consumption is higher than expected. Do what you can to save fuel without losing performance. Box this lap please Kimi, how is the front wing?
23Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeYeah it’s OK.
23Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaOK Paul Montreal 72 and multifunction seven, P1.
24Felipe MassaRob SmedleyMassa now has a good view of the rear of Sutil’s Force India.
For information his rear wing is bent.
24Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaUnderstood that he has less rear wing than us.
24Felipe MassaRob SmedleyNo, no, it’s bent. It’s to the left. It’s broken.
24Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaUnderstood: ‘Bent’.
24Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelVettel’s lap times are in the low 1’19s.
Hamilton 19.9. Next fastest is 19.4.
26Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeRaikkonen is behind Perez.
Is the car in front of us a two-stop?
26Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenYes, Kimi. The two cars – three cars in front at least are on two stops.
26Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonTarget lap minus three.
26Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergHulkenberg is behind Bottas, Perez and Raikkonen. All except Raikkonen go on to make two pit stops.
Three cars in front of you: different strategy. All the rest: same as you.
26Gary GannonMax ChiltonBlue flag, Hamilton.
27Jules BianchiPaul DavisonMaldonado passes Bianchi on lap 26.
Should I race Maldonado or not?
27Paul DavisonJules BianchiYep we’re racing him Jules. His deg’s starting, let’s race him.
27Tony RossNico RosbergLet us know if you want a flap adjust at the next stop.
27Nico RosbergTony RossNo change.
27Jonathan EddollsValtteri BottasBottas passes Button and the McLaren driver pits at the end of the lap.
Button in front looks to be struggling on these tyres.
28Jonathan EddollsValtteri BottasGreat move again Valtteri keep driving like this, tyres are looking OK.
28Andrew MurdochPastor MaldonadoGood job, Pastor, good job.
28Dave RobsonJenson ButtonBox this lap.
28Jenson ButtonDave RobsonOK, box this lap.
28Dave RobsonJenson ButtonThis will be [medium] tyre. I propose we leave the wing alone, no wing adjust.
28Jenson ButtonDave RobsonOK, in this lap, [medium] tyre.
29Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergDi Resta who started on [mediums] still going quicker and quicker every lap.
29Mark TempleSergio PerezDegradation on this set doesn’t seem as bad. We’re still on Plan A and still looking at our Plan A stop target lap.
30Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaLooks like we have got our pit stop window over Bottas so that’s excellent work, Paul.
30Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaData really does look very healthy for these tyres so push. It’s an excellent job so far. Quality drive. Keep going.
31Jenson ButtonDave RobsonI need to know the plan.
31Dave RobsonJenson ButtonButton is reassured that race team engineer Hiroshi Imai is happy with the state of his tyres. Imai is a former Bridgestone engineer who joined McLaren in 2009.
We are Plan C and there are 42 more laps to do. We need to take care of the tyres, Hiroshi is confident.
31Tony RossNico RosbergPush hard now.
32Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonYou’re doing a great job Lewis, just keep doing what you’re doing. Current race situation you have Vettel 17 seconds up the road, Webber has not got past Nico, he’s 11 seconds behind.
33Gary GannonMax ChiltonLet’s go for a 21.5 Max, push a bit more, let’s use the tyre. Around five to go.
33Tony RossNico RosbergYou are going to the end of the race on this set. 39 laps to go, you need to look after the tyres to get 39 laps out of it so traction matrix most important.
33Nico RosbergTony RossI’m clear but who am I racing?
33Tony RossNico RosbergYou are racing Webber and Alonso still. Obviously they’re ahead at the moment but you are still racing. Next car behind is seven seconds, you’re not racing him, you’ll stay well ahead.
34Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonMy DRS won’t work in both zones.
34Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelVettel has caught Raikkonen to lap the Lotus driver, who is shown blue flags.
Be patient, mate, just be patient.
35Andrea StellaFernando AlonsoAlonso is given a message in English and Italian. In the Italian part of the message he is told Hamilton is 11 seconds ahead.
Safety car window is open.
35Mark TempleSergio PerezContinue what you’re doing, the brakes are OK if you need to keep doing that. At the moment we’re looking to stop at the same target lap. Massa in front on [super-soft] tyres is really starting to struggle so we’ve got a good opportunity to catch up with him. Let’s make sure we maximise our pace over the next laps until we reach our target lap.
35Tony RossNico RosbergNext lap target zero. Tyre temperature under control. Still traction needs to be under two.
36Mark TempleSergio PerezWe’re likely to be racing Jenson at the end of the race. He is on Plan B. So if we make this set of tyres go as long as we can then we’ll have a good tyre pace delta to him at the end of the race. So let’s make sure we keep looking after these tyres, make sure we’re in a good position for the end of the race.
36Sergio PerezMark TempleCopy.
36Phil CharlesJean-Eric VergneHaving been lapping in the 1’20s Vergne brings his times down into the 1’19s from lap 35.
KERS recovery four. That’s a better lap, Jev, keep it up.
37Brad JoyceAdrian SutilThere’s a ‘track surface slippy’ message in the last corner.
38Nico HulkenbergMarco SchupbachHulkenberg pits on lap 38 having spent the last three laps stuck behind Bottas. The Williams driver comes in two laps later and emerges from the pits behind the Sauber.
I think we need to overtake him in the pits. They have too good traction.
38Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergNo chance now, we have to try it on the track. Cool right.
38Mark TempleSergio PerezMassa now three seconds in front, he’s really struggling on these [super-soft] tyres now, we’re racing him for position. You’re current P11, P10 is up for grabs if you can get past him. Obviously we need to make sure we can still get to our target lap and have good tyre life at the end of the race.
39Dave RobsonJenson ButtonYou will get blue flags for Hamilton.
39Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanWe are still on target for Plan A.
40Max ChiltonGary GannonKeep going as long as it’s needed?
40Gary GannonMax ChiltonWe need in for a pit stop window. In now and you have Vergne behind.
40Jonathan EddollsValtteri BottasPush hard now. Hulkenberg behind has just pitted so push.
41Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaAbsolutely critical stage of the race now. Two-stoppers beginning to finalis their stops so we’re looking to maintain track position. Maximum push.
42Brad JoyceAdrian SutilWe’re catching Massa ahead at two seconds a lap.
42Gary GannonMax ChiltonOK Max we’re trying to stay ahead of Pic but make it to the end. 28 to go.
42Phil CharlesJean-Eric VergneThis is good, need good laps. Just keep concentrating, doing the best laps you can.
43Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelVettel catches Giedo van der Garde to lap him again. The Caterham driver has already collided with the other Red Bull of Webber.
Watch out for Van der Garde, he’s not paying any attention.
44Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelWatch out for Van der Garde, he might not see you on the inside, be careful.
44Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelGood job mate. Good patience, good job.
44Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaWe have a free pit stop window. We’re looking to extend this as long as we can. The cars we are racing are Perez and Sutil so maximum push.
45Marco SchupbachNico Hulkenberg14 is actually our true position so we have to keep pushing, maybe profit from somebody else dropping the tyres at the end.
45Phil CharlesJean-Eric VergneHow are the tyres now Jev?
45Jean-Eric VergnePhil CharlesNot too good, a little bit oversteer but it’s OK.
45Phil CharlesJean-Eric VergneOK understood.
46Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanMassa is on the [medium] tyre, Massa is going to the end. Kimi in front is also on the [medium] tyre, he’s going to the end, so you’re racing Kimi and Massa.
46Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonYou were eight tenths quicker than Alonso last lap.
46Mark TempleSergio PerezJenson is the car behind now, we are racing him, we are racing Jenson.
47Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaAs I said the car behind, right behind you, is Fernando, and then one second behind Fernando is Webber.
47Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonCharlie level one. If you try and stay left on the exit of turn 14 you may get DRS.
48Juan Pablo RamirezGiedo van der GardeVan der Garde is shown blue flags for a full lap as Hulkenberg tries to lap him. Hulkenberg eventually draws alongside on the entry to the final chicane and the pair make contact.
Stop the car. Find a safe place.
48Giedo van der GardeJuan Pablo RamirezStop, really?
48Juan Pablo RamirezGiedo van der GardeYeah Giedo stop and kill the engine.
49Nico HulkenbergMarco SchupbachSuspension failure or something.
49Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergCan you come back?
49Nico HulkenbergMarco SchupbachI don’t think it’s safe in the quick sector.
49Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergOK Nico, stop, remember KERS jump. Sorry for that.
49Nico HulkenbergMarco SchupbachWhat happened there?
49Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergVan der Garde has a loose front wing, I don’t know if it was this. We will see.
49Simon RennieMark WebberTyres are good, OK to push ’til the end. Tyres are easy.
50Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelYour previous stint was 33 laps.
50Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenTyre wear looks good to the end, Kimi.
51Mark TempleSergio PerezYou must let Hamilton through, you’ve had a blue flag.
52Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaBasically we’re going to leave this call to you. As soon as you feel the tyres are shot we need the call and we’ll pit. OK? So stay out and push.
53Mark TempleSergio PerezThere’s 18 laps to go. There are a few cars ahead who are on quite old tyres, they’re trying to one-stop it, so they may come towards us at the end of the race. So we’ve got opportunities to gain positions if we’ve got good tyres at the end of the race.
53Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelVettel goes wide at the first corner and runs over the run-off.
OK mate settle down, bring your tyres back in.
53Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelFocus on braking and clean exit, that’s what we’re after.
53Mark WebberSimon RennieAre these backmarkers serious today or what? Unbelievable.
54Romain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuThe tyres are losing traction
54Romain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuHow many laps?
54Ayao KomatsuRomain Grosjean18 laps to go, one-eight.
54Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaFor information Kimi is on the medium and he fitted it at lap 23 of the race. So your tyres are much newer.
55Simon RennieMark WebberWebber is just under nine seconds behind second-placed Hamilton. Alonso is between them and catching Hamilton.
We may catch Hamilton by the end of the race, still got a chance of catching Hamilton, keep up the pace, keep pushing.
56Tony RossNico RosbergWe’d like to pull more of a gap to Vergne and then we can do a precautionary pit stop to change tyres. They’ve just flat spotted.
56Paul DavisonJules BianchiThere are lots of blue flags behind we’ll just have to take them and make the best of what we can when we’ve got free air. You should have one lap in free air now, let’s aim for a 19.8.
57Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelThat’s fastest lap. Cars behind you still have to go through traffic. Just keep it clean.
57Mark TempleSergio PerezThere’s 14 laps to go. Massa ahead is our best chance of gaining a place. Let’s go and attack him, maximise the last 14 laps, let’s catch him up, let’s see if we can get a good position.
58Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaThis tyre has had issues on other runners in terms of rear graining. We need to target no more than a 1’18.5 so we don’t actually need to go any faster. So zero on your dash, look after your rear tyres in traction.
59Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonTraction metrics are under 2,000. Temps are looking good.
59Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonYou should let me drive, man.
59Francesco NenciEsteban GutierrezRicciardo is pushing again behind and we have 11 laps to go.
59Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaOne second quicker than Kimi.
59Jonathan EddollsValtteri Bottas12 laps to go. Improve the pace if possible, but only if possible.
60Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonHamilton’s second place is under pressure from Alonso and he is having difficulty putting Sutil a lap down.
Blue flags!
60Paul DavisonJules BianchiLet’s use the clear air. Lap time target 19.9.
61Gary GannonMax ChiltonTen laps to go, Max. Just hang in there, we’ll hope Pic makes a mistake.
62Mark TempleSergio PerezSutil gets a drive-through penaty for taking too long to let Hamilton past.
Sutil in front has been given a drive-through so let’s really push now we’ve got a good opportunity to get ahead of him. Let’s really push.
62Brad JoyceAdrian SutilAdrian we have a drive-through penalty for ignoring blue flags. Keep pushing and stay out for another lap.
62Brad JoyceAdrian SutilPits this lap, pit confirm. It’s a drive through penalty, do not stop in the box, just drive through the pit lane and back onto the circuit.
63Simon RennieMark WebberThe cars ahead are losing time by fighting, you still may get a chance.
64Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelAlonso is now P2. You’re plus 20 Alonso.
64Brad JoyceAdrian SutilWe’re 5.6 seconds behind Massa, we’re in tenth place, let’s get Massa.
65Esteban GutierrezFrancesco NenciToo much locking end of brake.
65Francesco NenciEsteban GutierrezCopy. Is it only the front-left, question?
65Esteban GutierrezFrancesco NenciRear, rear locking.
65Francesco NenciEsteban GutierrezCopy
65Tony RossNico RosbergBe aware you can use the second DRS zone, you’ve not been using it when you have it. Vettel, race leader, is five seconds ahead so if you can pick the pace up, stay in front, that’d be good.
66Lewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonFernando just closed the door on me and took my wing out.
66Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonCopy that Lewis. It looks good to us, no damage.
66Dave RobsonJenson ButtonYellow G1 and Green F3.
66Tony RossNico RosbergGutierrez crashes at the pit lane exit after a late pit stop to change tyres.
Yellow flag turn two, car off on the outside in the barrier, marshals are off in the grass.
67Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaDRS should be disabled.
67Francesco NenciEsteban GutierrezYou’re OK, Esteban?
67Esteban GutierrezFrancesco NenciYes, I’m OK.
67Francesco NenciEsteban GutierrezCopy. Switch off procedure, please.
68Andrew MurdochPastor MaldonadoDon’t hold Sutil up, let him go.
68Brad JoyceAdrian SutilStill yellow flags turn one.
68Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanTrack is clear.
69Gianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaRaikkonen seven seconds behind, this lap he is one-and-a-half seconds faster. Better put a bit of a push on but should be well safe.
69Dave RobsonJenson ButtonTrack is clear ahead and there are two laps two go.
69Phil CharlesJean-Eric VergneAlonso and Hamilton are coming behind you, you may get a blue flag for them. Blue Jev, blue flag for Alonso.
70Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelLast lap, bring it home.
70Andrea StellaFernando AlonsoLast lap.
70Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaMassa passes Raikkonen.
OK that’s good mate. P8 and this is the last lap.
VLChristian HornerSebastian VettelFantastic Seb, you won the Canadian Grand Prix! Fantastic, makes up for two years ago. Brilliant drive.
VLGuillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelGood job, mate. Very tidy, very mature – well, almost! Really good job today mate. Very clean.
VLSebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinYes! We won Canada! Thank you boys, thank you. That was amazing, the car was absolutely amazing. Thank you boys. Sorry for the little off towards the end but the car was fantastic. Woohoo! Yes!
VLChristian HornerSebastian VettelRight, Seb, Rocky is coming up to get up on the podium with you today so look after him, keep him under control.
VLSebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinYes baby, we deserve that. Great car, good step from Friday once again. Thank you boyds. Yes!
VLChristian HornerSebastian VettelWe’ll see you move like Jagger later.
VLGuillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelAlright Sebastian, give the boys a wave.
VLAndrea StellaFernando AlonsoSuperb, superb.
VLFernando AlonsoAndrea StellaThank you. Good return after a difficult weekend.
VLPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonGreat job Lewis, P3. It’s a real tough one with a load of traffic.
VLRoss BrawnLewis HamiltonVery good job this weekend, Lewis. Very good job. We know we’ve still got to find a bit more in the car, and the track didn’t help today, but very good job and great race, well done.
VLSimon RennieMark WebberNice job today. P4 we finished. Going pretty well, pulling away from Alonso until we got that contact with Van der Garde. By the way Van der Garde got a ten second stop-go penalty, he was obviously in the wrong. I don’t know if you noticed but we had some front wing damage, it was going to be pretty difficult from then onwards. Good job anyway.
VLChristian HornerMark WebberGood job Mark, good recovery especially with that front wing. Don’t know what Van der Garde was doing.
VLTony RossNico RosbergWell done Nico so pick up rubber where you can. Order was Vettel, Alonso, Lewis, Webber, yourself, Vergne, Di Resta, Massa, Raikkonen, Sutil.
VLPhil CharlesJean-Eric VergneCool the brakes, Jev. That’s an absolutely outstanding drive Jev, well done. Brilliant job.
VLJean-Eric VergnePhil CharlesWoohoo! Good job guys. Really, really happy. What a weekend. Woohoo!
VLPhil CharlesJean-Eric VergneEverybody’s congratulating you here, Jev, that’s briliant.
VLGianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaWell done Paul, P7. That was a perfect drive and that’s well deserved. I’d say that was a return of the ball. Good job.
VLPaul di RestaGianpiero LambiaseGood job, guys. Nice strategy. God I can’t believe how long those tyres were going. Timed to perfection as well. Recovery after yesterday, now let’s get it right for Silverstone.
VLGianpiero LambiasePaul di RestaWe will. Great drive.
VLRob SmedleyFelipe MassaWell done mate. That is P8 so some points. A good recovery from yesterday. Tough race, clearly a very difficult race with the traffic but it was OK and we got some points.
VLMark SladeKimi RaikkonenGood effort. Wasn’t such a great performance from us. Thanks very much. Points again.
VLBrad JoyceAdrian SutilUnlucky Adrian, that’s P10.
VLAdrian SutilBrad JoyceI really don’t understand this drive-through. I mean the backmarkers are holding me up, holding everyone up, and I get a drive-through. So to the FIA I really don’t understand that.
VLBrad JoyceAdrian SutilYes we think it’s very harsh and we will discuss it further with the FIA.
VLMark TempleSergio PerezWe finished P11 which is not the result we wanted. But you showed some good pace, good tyre management and pushing laps when needed. Unfortunately I don’t think there was much opportunity for any more than that.
VLSergio PerezMark TempleHow was the one-stop strategy? Do you think it would have worked for us?
VLMark TempleSergio PerezI think it’s difficult to say, obviously we’ll have a look after the race. Obviously you finished ahead of Jenson and were able to push through the race. The thing I’m not sure about is the first stint, whether or not we should have tried to go longer on the [super-soft]. But I do think two-stop was the right way to go.
VLDave RobsonJenson ButtonNot quite the race we were intending. But that’s actually a really good drive to look after the tyres and do that many laps on the [medium]. That’s a really good effort.
VLJenson ButtonDave RobsonYeah I’m not sure a one-stop was the way to go. I think we need to do a bit more work on lap times you want me to do because I don’t think that was correct. It felt very slow to me. And obviously could go a lot quicker when we pushed.
VLDave RobsonJenson ButtonYeah, agreed. I think we underestimated the performance of the [medium] for a while there. So yeah, you’re right, it was a bit slow to start with.

Thanks for the great feature Keith

    1. Maybe Checo needs a lot of words and very clear instructions? Do we know who else has this engineer work with?

  2. I love this. Thanks Keith, funny radio message between RBR and Vettel at the end of the race

  3. Relived the Grand Prix! Thanx

  4. radio transcripts are definitely a super nice and interesting feature, thanks!

  5. Thanks Keith, its even better with the extensive notes putting a great perspective on it, I really liked reliving the race like that!

    1. @bascb

Yeah I agree thanks Keith. The notes really help put what I’m reading into perspective.

  6. Wonderful work. Thanks a lot for this feature Keith!

    1. @keithcollantine Guess I’ve spotted a typo. Despite what happened last time, I’m mentioning it here to help you polish the article. In lap 61 Gary Gannon talks to Max Chilton (mentioned as Charles Pic) “Ten laps to go, Max. Just hang in there, we’ll hope Pic makes a mistake.”

      1. @seahorse Changed it, thanks.

    might be some mistake

by the way nice transcript! who says high speed chess is boring? :p
really give me some perspective, I used to only know fuel mixture 1, 2, 3 from F1 game!

I’m sorry Horner, but nobody, I mean nobody moves like Jagger!

This is a welcomed addition to F1F Keith, thank you! We all appreciate your dedication to the F1 cause. I hope this is a regular feature from now on *fingers crossed*.

  9. I am surprised how no one else was catching on to Paul’s super-strategy. Only Hulkenburg’s engineer mentioned him once.

  10. These are great Keith – thanks!

  11. Wowwww what an article.

  12. Hmmm, ok. Gone from my favs.

In Hamilton’s communications what does “Target plus 2” and “Target minus 3” mean? Is it seconds?

If it’s seconds, 2-3 seconds per lap is pretty significant. Can these drivers deliver a lap at any time? E.g. Drive a 1:50 lap and then drive a 1:55 lap?

    1. @freelittlebirds In that context it will refer to what lap they’re planning to pit him on.

Duh, it sounds so obvious now that you said it!;-)

I wonder if we could get a sense of the pre-race strategy that the teams engage in. Obviously they have multiple scenarios pre-planned.

  14. These are awesome! Thanks!

  15. Thanks Keith awesome feature.

  16. Tons of fun to read, thanks Keith!

Shame VDG is such rubbish. The guy is a worse cucumber than Karthikeyan.

    1. @d3v0 He did have a bit of a shocker. Though I think Hulkenberg should shoulder some of the blame for their contact. Granted, Van der Garde should have moved aside much sooner, but he didn’t, and Hulkenberg failed to take account of that.

I’d do away with blue flags completely and make the leading cars overtake on merit, not entitlement.

      1. @hellotraverse You’re preaching to the choir as far as I’m concerned. This is the way it works in IndyCar and it’s much better. It keeps the leaders from pulling away too quickly (it also helps that most of their tracks are shorter than F1’s often over-long circuits).

          @keithcollantine
I have to confess, I haven’t actually watched an IndyCar GP before *Hangs head in shame*. The more I hear about IndyCar the more intrigued I am, I’ll definitely make a concerted effort to watch a race in it’s entirety this year.

    3. I’m not so sure to be honest @hellotraverse: I don’t like slower cars interfering with the faster ones on track as they are well out of contention so consequently should have no influence IMO. Quite often I find back markers adversely affect battles up front and may make it too easy for the following car to close up and make a proper overtake for position (for example, Sutil probably helped out Alonso in Canada when Hamilton was clearly held up).

Interestingly that’s one of the few things I like DRS for: it disposes of those cars that shouldn’t be there swiftly!

        @vettel1
Surely slower cars having an influence on proceedings can only be a positive. If a leading driver is fast enough to cruise up to a slow “backmarker” he should have no issue pulling a pass.

As it stands teams like Caterham and Marussia turn up, qualify at the back of the grid and have no real input or relevance towards the race outcome, doing away with blue flags would flip that on its head as suddenly, Caterham/Marussia etc could be an integral factor in the race and subsequently the WDC/WCC. It would also force the top teams to respect and appreciate the less accomplished teams and would prevent drivers from mistakenly letting a car past that isn’t obliged (like when Bottas mistakenly let Raikkonen through at Monaco last month).

Also from a safety standpoint, I’ve always thought it more dangerous for a driver to have to anticipate and avoid a lapping car, It’s much safer for the supposed faster car to just overtake. It would also add another dynamic to the race as what strategy the backmarkers are on could affect the strategy of a leading car, thus making the strategic element of the race far more interesting and entertaining for us lot.

Very valid points but really it’s just an issue with personal tastes: I feel personally backmarkers holding up lapping drivers has a negative effect on the leading battles as in a sense it artificially tampers with them, slowing drivers down where really they shouldn’t be IMO.

I just like the leader to lead as if the race was just one incredibly long lap!

If Sutil was not duty bound by blue flags and had the freedom to race his own race, both Alonso and Ham would’ve had to overtake him on merit and neither would’ve been held up because the onus would be on them to pass, and if they can’t pass then tough poo. The current system needlessly creates confusion which leads to incidents, like VDG making contact with Webber at Canada. I’m pretty sure that had VDG not felt the pressure to get out of Webber’s way asap, he wouldn’t have made such an error (or at least it would’ve decreased the likelihood), likewise karthikeyan at Malaysia last year.

        1. @hellotraverse on the flipside though, if one were to be held up by a backmarker because they were on fresh tyres and one was on older tyres but with a 20 second gap to driver x (also on fresh tyres), you may be pretty ****** if you were held up and so consequently lost heaps of time and eventually position to driver x whom with blue flags you would’ve had a genuine chance of beating. That’s what I mean by interference and personally I just really don’t like it but I respect you feel differently!

  17. Awesome work, @keithcollantine. Must be a lot of work!

  18. Jenson wasn’t happy with his team’s plan… And he was so damn right! C’mon McLaren, when your car is bad, drivers will need a load of help from engineers and you failing on both ends.

  19. This is a great feature. If I may suggest a couple of improvements, it would be nice to have the ability to filter the conversation by a particular driver, and a way to easily tell apart pit-to-driver from driver-to-pit messages (color-coding, an arrow icon, etc). With those two minor modifications, it would be easier to follow conversations.

    1. @ironcito

it would be nice to have the ability to filter the conversation by a particular driver

I thought the same thing, but there’s a pretty simple way to do that by simply using Ctrl-F and typing your choice of driver (for me it would naturally be Sebastian Vettel) and the inclusion of conversations from other drivers involving Vettel (in this example) wouldn’t be a real issue if you use the full name!

You’ve just saved Keith a whole heap of work with this advice!

  20. Traction metrics are under 2,000. Temps are looking good.

I have to say I had a good laugh when this was broadcast, who wants to hear that while they’re driving?!

    1. @george more to the point, who actually fully understands that when they’re driving‽ I’d want it in simple terms of “traction levels good, tyre temps good, go racing”!

  21. I assume this is based on the selected messages the FIA chose to make available. In any case it’s a shame there is nothing (literally!) from Alonso until the race is over. It would have been interesting to hear the radio chatter as he was overtaking Webber and Hamilton.

    1. Believe the transcript is taken from the FOM Pit lane channel.

Regarding Alonso, They do most of there transmissions in Italian now & thats why you hardly hear any of them played out.

A lot of the teams/drivers also now add swear words into stuff they don’t want broadcast on TV so you don’t hear as much as FOM would like to play out.
Live transmissions were ended in 2006 after people complained to various worldwide broadcasters after we were playing Fisichella’s radio when he decided to start swearing during the Bahrain Gp.

      1. The majority of it is from the pit lane feed, however there are a few messages which were heard on the main feed but not the pit feed (e.g. Di Resta being told about his DRS on lap eight).

Live transmissions were ended in 2006 after people complained to various worldwide broadcasters after we were playing Fisichella’s radio when he decided to start swearing during the Bahrain GP.

Shame I’d far rather hear it as-it-happens. It keeps us from hearing the messages properly and properly understanding what’s going on. I’d like to see them allow people to listen in live on whichever driver they choose. They could put the feeds online with a suitable notice for the whingers: “Warning, sometimes people swear or speak in languages that aren’t English.”

Am I right in saying the teams can hear more of what’s being said by their rivals on the radios than what gets broadcast, including on the pit radio feed?

        1. Am I right in saying the teams can hear more of what’s being said by their rivals on the radios than what gets broadcast, including on the pit radio feed?

Now i’m pretty sure that they can as teams are no longer able to encrypt transmissions as they were in the past.

With regards to live transmissions, There is actually a regulation that was introduced at the start of 2012 which states all teams must make all transmissions available to all broadcasters:

          8.7 Driver radio :
Other than authorised connections to the FIA ECU, any voice radio communication system between car and pits must be stand-alone and must not transmit or receive other data. All such communications must be open and accessible to both the FIA and broadcasters.

      2. They do most of there transmissions in Italian now

But I see that Massa’s radio messages are in English, or many of them are.

I know Vettel speaks French and I assume Guillaume Rocquelin does as well, so they could communicate in a language other than English if they wanted. Or is this decision made for the drivers by the teams?

  22. What about the message by Rocky to Seb when he set a purple time in the first sector at the end of the race “Monaco 1988 Senna” and Seb’s reply “OK, OK, I’m just kiddin’ “. That was gold.

  23. Keith… This is one of the special feature you have after every race weekend. Love this.

I would loved to read such communication when Schumi was around. We would have learnt a lot about the Mercedes’s tyre trouble from 2010 – 2012

  24. Another great feature, Congratulations, it does give a lot of clarification to what I saw during the race. Excellent idea!!

  25. Thanks @keithcollantine for the team radio transcript. Awesome work!

  26. This is such an incredible feature to be added to the site and I’m glad everyone has embraced it.
Even though the SKY team do a great job of keeping us up to date, there will enevitably be things that aren’t discovered during a race by the likes of Ted Kravitz & co.
Things like certain drivers struggling with an issue or even wearing their brakes harder by pressing both pedals at the same time! This stuff is GOLD!

  27. Tyres, tyres, tyres. 85% of the radio comms are based on tyres – too hot, too cold, watch wear, watch deg…etc. Its all the teams talk about, the fans, the detractors, the drivers, the journos, the media, hell, even the FIA found themselves talking about it and thebrand new International Tribunal found out it was the first test they were put to. This should change for 2014.

  28. Thanks for this, I really enjoyed it!
