Ten of the best pictures which tell the story of the Belgian Grand Prix weekend.

Romain Grosjean, Friday

Romain Grosjean’s Lotus touches the ground as the car hurtles up and over Radillon.

Valtteri Bottas and Pat Symonds, Saturday

Pat Symonds was back in the paddock in his new role as chief technical officer for Williams. Valtteri Bottas will be hoping he can turn the team’s fortunes around.

Kimi Raikkonen, Saturday

Kimi Raikkonen was absent on Thursday due to ‘illness’. It’s not the first time he’s been suspiciously absent from the pre-event media day, and with many rumours surrounding his future the press were eager to catch up with him when he returned.

Lewis Hamilton, Saturday

Practice suggested Mercedes had lost their way: Lewis Hamilton was 15th, 12th and 12th again in the three sessions. But he seized the initiative on a wet track in qualifying to claim pole position for the fourth race in a row.

Giedo van der Garde, Belgian Grand Prix

Another driver who took advantage of the conditions was Giedo van der Garde, who claimed 14th on the grid for Caterham. He also sported a new helmet design for the race which is the closest the Dutchman has to a home grand prix.

Start, Belgian Grand Prix

Hamilton stayed ahead at the first corner but not for much longer. Sebastian Vettel latched onto his tail at the exit of La Source and passed him on the approach to Les Combes.

Greenpeace protest, Belgian Grand Prix

Race title sponsors Shell were targeted by Greenpeace on race day. Protesters unfolded this banner before the start of the race and further demonstrations took place around and above the track – the latter displayed by paragliders.

Despite their pre-race activities having alerted track security to their presence, they were also able to disrupt the podium ceremony after the race. Two banners were triggered by remote control and another protester abseiled down the front of the podium to display another sign.

Daniel Ricciardo, Belgian Grand Prix

Daniel Ricciardo is applauded by the Toro Rosso team after climbing from 19th to score a point.

Podium, Belgian Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton decided to include David Coulthard in the podium celebrations. “Thank you boys,” said Coulthard, “I forgot what it tastes like to have champagne in the face, it’s been such a long time.”

“I’ve only rented this suit for the day, I have to give the jacket back to someone else…”

Sebastian Vettel, Belgian Grand Prix

Vettel reflects on his fifth win of the season which increased his championship lead to 46 points over Fernando Alonso.

  1. That isn’t Ricciardo, it’s Vergne! But it’s even stranger then to see the mechanics applause, sure his recovery was as great as Ricciardo’s, but he scored no points…

    1. The number of times I’ve mixed them up this season…

    2. @fixy @andae23 Have put the correct picture in – was looking at two very similar images but didn’t notice only one was of Ricciardo!

      1. @keithcollantine the one at the top of the page is still Vergne :-)

        1. @tdog it’s not labeled though so that’s okay ;)

      2. @keithcollantine Don’t worry – in fact, I now have two great pictures instead of one!

  2. That picture of Seb is somewhat creepy

    1. I really like it, it’s like a kid looking into a wishing well.

“I’ve only rented this suit for the day, I have to give the jacket back to someone else…”

@David-Coulthard If I were you, I would keep that coat as a souvernir
(the @ is only to make my comment more credible hahaha)

  4. The protesters must have had a great view of the race.

  5. I was at the race and I was wondering when it looked like 2 paragliders in the sky, and after a while, a helicopter got very close to them and sort of shielded them out of the vicinity of the track space

  6. @keithcollantine

having altered track security to their presence

    I believe you meant alerted.

    1. Changed it, thanks.

  7. “Vettel reflects…”
