2013 Belgian Grand Prix

It wasn’t just Greenpeace who got booed at the Belgian Grand Prix as these fans’ videos from Spa show. Plus a new angle on the Maldonado/Di Resta crash.

Friday practice

Drivers give the fearsome plunge at Pouhon extra respect during the slippery conditions at the start of practice.

Adrian Sutil does a practice start.

Dramatic shots from Radillon, Eau Rouge and Kemmel.

Final practice

A static but scenic shot of cars passing through the nameless turn nine and hammering downhill towards Pouhon on one of F1’s most picturesque tracks.

Drivers’ parade

Although the booing on the podium turned out to be directed at someone other than Sebastian Vettel (see below) sadly as in Canada there was another pathetic group who turned up to boo the world champion.

Unusual to see a McLaren and a Caterham adjacent to each other on the grid. Behind Sergio Perez and Giedo van der Garde is Jules Bianchi, who makes a slow getaway.

Vettel passes Hamilton

Pole sitter Lewis Hamilton’s lead only lasted a kiloemtre or two before Vettel surged past.

Lap five

Mark Webber passes Jenson Button for fifth place – the pair finished in that order.

Maldonado takes out Di Resta

Pastor Maldonado swipes into both Force Indias after being passed by Esteban Gutierrez. The final contact eliminated Paul di Resta from the race and earned Maldonado a stop-go penalty.

Podium protests

It was a bizarre scene on the podium as Greenpeace protesters turned up with a point to make and FOM did the best they could to keep them out of shot. The first video shows the remote-controlled banners which appeared while the national anthems were being played.

As these videos show the drivers were somewhat confused about what was happening, particularly due to the booing from the crowd which was directed at the protesters who the drivers couldn’t see (though Alonso did spot them at one point).

Track invasion

Fans take to the track after the race.

I filmed the moment Vettel overtook Hamilton as well, I think it’s a bit closer to the track: http://youtu.be/K5zN4pf_74o

  2. It was a great weekend. First time at Spa and it was lots of fun. The race itself was almost the low point! Gold 3 Eau Rouge for us. Did a track round the track on the saturday.

  3. the nameless turn nine

Now I wonder how safe an F1 race really is, if having a paddock pass is the only safety measure then it doesn’t speak very well on the Belgian organisers, I’m sure that wouldn’t have happened in Bahrain.

That was my first time at Spa as well. Too bad I had a flight to catch at Brussels airport and failed to tour the track after the race, I was really looking forward to snatch a DRS sign as souvenir [:)] but I was marginal on time to get to Brussels and get my flight to Lisbon at 20h30.

At the airport I saw Mr. Pedro Martinez de La Rosa all by himself getting to his gate talking on the phone (in Spanish). I waved him and he responded nicely with a smile and nodding his head. I regret not bothering him to take a picture for Instagram…

Sat at Eau Rouge during drivers parade lap and Vettel got booed as well there. Will upload the video later. As Hamilton got by far the most cheering during the entire weekend it seems obvious (and I agree with there) that the Brits don’t like Vettel at all.

As promised, here’s the video of the start filmed from the Eau Rouge grandstand. If you look close, you can see how Hamilton takes a wider line than Vettel which might have helped Vettel taking the lead at the Kemmel straight. Skip to 2:26 to watch it.

Here is when Vettel got booed by most of the people at Eau Rouge grand stand. Skip to 1:55. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EbosNOimEo&feature=youtu.be
