Team radio was a major talking point at the Italian Grand Prix after a terse exchange between Fernando Alonso and his team during qualifying.

The exact substance of Alonso’s Italian radio message was disputed – some claimed he was calling his teams “idiots” (“scemi”) or sarcastically referring to them as “geniuses” (“geni”). Either way it was not complimentary, and was taken as another indication of strained relations between driver and team.

If Lewis Hamilton had aimed similar criticism of his team during the race, they were none the wiserm as his radio wasn’t working properly.

Fortunately for the Red Bull drivers theirs was, as both had to be warned about gearbox problems in the closing stages of the race.

Here are all the messages from the Italian Grand Prix that were broadcast during the race.

Lap*FromToMessage
PRDave RobsonJenson ButtonShort-shifting off the launch, first to second – you can do it, as long as you’ve already dropped the second paddle. But it’s not recommended in these conditions.
PRJenson ButtonDave RobsonYeah, totally agree. That was just if it’s going to be wet.
PRKimi RaikkonenMark SladeIs it normal that my steering wheel went very… The lights are very low. I cannot see what it says on the dashboard.
PRPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonSituation: The weather is looking more unsettled but it’s very difficult to tell where the rain is going to come, if it’s going to come at all. It’s predicted to be predominantly a dry race. We can only see 15, 20 minutes into the future in terms of where we expect the rain to come from. So far we are seeing a dry window. In terms of the plan, we’ve discussed it with James and Ross, and we are still thinking the [hard] tyre will be the best race tyre for us to start on. It’s not that… we understand it may compromise us in the opening laps but it will buy us back performance later on in the race. It also gives us more flexibility to do the right thing should the weather come along.
PRLewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonOK.
PRPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonThat said, you’re going to get more opportunity to get heat into these tyres. You’ve got the formation lap where you can really work them, Jock will coach you through that, I’m sure the grip will be in a much better position.
PRPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonAny lack of grip, was it predominantly front or rear?
PRLewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonOverall lack of grip. I’d say in terms of balance there’s been understeer and there’s been oversteer, it feels like the car is maybe minus half, so it’s quite neutral. So it feels good at the moment. I’m happy with the car.
PRPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonAffirm. If the fronts were cold and a couple of laps in the fronts have come up and it starts to go to a bit more oversteery then just bring the Diff High Speed up to six, will give you more support on entry.
PRLewis HamiltonPeter BonningtonWe need a good start here, OK.
PRPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonJust to reiterate, Lewis, certainly in those first hundred metres, if you can, keep the steering as straight as possible. Obviously if you have to defend or move, you have to, but really, really early stages just try to keep it as straight as possible.
FLGuillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelAll systems are good so tyre warming when you can and remember your procedures. It’s bite point learn and two burn-outs. We need good clutch prep so straight to your box. Focus on KERS at the start and KERS eight when you stop.
FLSimon RennieMark WebberThis is a red start. React to the beep quickly. Use KERS in gear two.
1Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonCancel RS.
2Juan Pablo RamirezGiedo van der GardeMove brake balance to the front.
2Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeRaikkonen nudged Perez at the first corner.
I lost my front wing. Can you hear me or not? I lost my front wing.
2Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenYes, Kimi, we understand, box this lap for tyres and front wing.
2Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeThe McLaren just took my line away completely. Yeah I mean I lost all the downforce, so I couldn’t slow down.
2Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenYeah fully understand, Kimi, let’s just see what we can do.
3Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaConcentrate on our race now, this is good.
3Sergio PerezMark TempleMark can you hear me OK?
3Mark TempleSergio PerezYes that is loud and clear. Good job, keep going, doing a really good job.
3Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeRaikkonen has pitted for a new front wing.
Are we sure that the front wing is in the right angle because it feels a lot of front end?
3Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenShould be the same, Kimi. Set the same. Looks the same in the data as well.
3Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeOK.
4Sebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinVettel locked up his front-right tyre at the first corner at the start.
Keep an eye on the front-right.
4Nico RosbergTony RossThe rear wing is vibrating a lot.
4Tony RossNico RosbergCopy. Stand by.
4Tony RossNico RosbergWe’re not worried about the rear wing. We think it’s turbulence from tows of other cars. We’re happy.
5Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonWe are not sure whether you are transmitting. Traction metrics 750.
5Paul di RestaGianPiero LambiaseDi Resta retired on the first lap when he hit Grosjean at the Roggia chicane.
Sorry I just locked the front. Ah.
5GianPiero LambiasePaul di RestaOK Paul. Ignition P0 please mate.
5Phil CharlesJean-Eric VergneThis is really good, look after your tyres, let’s see if we can overtake him. Let’s see i we can do him, Jev.
6Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenPlease avoid throttle and brake overlap, please.
6Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeWhy is that?
6Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenFuel consumption is on the high side.
6Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonHamilton has radio problems.
We cannot hear you, just flick your wear switch to two and back to one.
7Tony RossNico RosbergWe’re happy with the gaps, just looking after the tyres mainly at the moment. Ideally on main straight pull to the right-hand side just to cool the car.
7Phil CharlesJean-Eric VergneThe two cars behind you have just closed up a little bit. Let’s have nice, good laps.
7Andrew MurdochPastor MaldonadoRemember to look after the tyres in turn six, nine and eleven. Try further forwards with brake balance.
7Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelPlus three Massa, your pace is good.
8Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergLap times on target and competitive, very good. Be just a bit more gentle with the rears exit five.
8Tim WrightCharles PicYou are losing compared to Giedo in turn one braking and turn six. You are going to fast in and too slow in the mid-corner, turn six.
8Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelAlonso is now P2.
9Sebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinCheck front-right.
9Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelUnderstood, we’re monitoring right-front at all times, we know exactly where it’s at. We know it’s not good. But to be clear, no concern with right-front for now. We are measuring it.
9Paul DavisonJules BianchiGood job, Jules. The Caterham ahead is doing 31.2s. We’ll soon have Raikkonen behind for position.
10Mark TempleSergio PerezHow is the balance? Any signs of deg?
10Sergio PerezMark TempleYes I am starting to feel the rears to go away a little bit. The rear tyres are beginning to go away.
10Mark TempleSergio PerezAt the moment lap time deg looks low, we’re still on Plan A.
11Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergKeep that lap time, same pace as Massa. Very good, Nico, keep pushing.
12Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonBox, pit confirm. Front-right, slow puncture. Box.
12Andrea StellaFernando AlonsoGomme quando puoi/Tyres when you can.
12Fernando AlonsoAndrea StellaOK.
12Brad JoyceAdrian SutilHamilton in front may have a slow puncture. Hamilton in front is in trouble.
13Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaBrake balance forward for corner one and four. Brake balance forward now.
13Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonBox, pit confirm. Box, pit confirm.
13Francesco NenciEsteban GutierrezPace is OK for our strategy. Sutil is pulling away. Maldonado lap time like you.
14Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelFront wing feedback when you can.
14Sebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinFront wing OK, tyres still one plus.
14Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelUnderstood. Remember front wing rotary is still working.
14Phil CharlesJean-Eric VergneMix five, Jev. Just be careful not to brake too late for the second chicane.
15Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergNico how the rears are going? Should be a bit more gentle exit five if possible.
15Sergio PerezMark TempleThey are the same like before. But I’m starting to lose the rears. So I think it’s going to be very hard to reach the target lap.
15Mark TempleSergio PerezPace still looks very good. Data here looks good for the tyres. We’ll monitor the siotuation as it goes on. Still on Plan A at the moment.
16Jean-Eric VergnePhil CharlesVergne retires with what turned out to be a transmission problem.
The engine has gone.
16Phil CharlesJean-Eric VergneOK Jev, understood. Hard luck, Jev, you were doing a really good job.
16Simon RennieMark WebberMay be some oil, turn four.
17Fernando AlonsoAndrea StellaAlonso gives a message in Italian.
17Dave RobsonJenson ButtonLet’s see how we get on in this free air. You are in the window.
17Tony RossNico RosbergInformation: Hulkenberg says his rear tyres are going.
17Marco MatassaDaniel RicciardoBalance, Daniel?
17Daniel RicciardoMarco MatassaThe rear is nervous on entry, there’s big understeer.
18Romain GrosjeanAyao KomatsuGrosjean asks for a front wing change during his pit stop.
Can I have two turns on the front flap.
18Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanOK copy that. Look after the gears out of turn two and seven.
18Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaPlan A looks OK. Webber always slow in the middle sector. Just faster where he has the DRS.
18Marco MatassaDaniel RicciardoCopy, fail three, is that correct?
19Gary GannonMax ChiltonMix three, Max, over car is mix three as well.
19Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelTry torque five, first two chicanes.
20Mark TempleSergio PerezHow much are you being held up by Ricciardo?
20Sergio PerezMark TempleAbout half a second a lap.
20Mark TempleSergio PerezOK understood.
20Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergHulkenberg approaches his lap 24 pit stop.
Kill the tyres now. Push like hell.
21Tony RossNico RosbergWe’re targeting four a the end of this lap.
21Brad JoyceAdrian SutilWe need to start pushing now, Adrian.
21Dave RobsonJenson ButtonMcLaren make a last-minute change to Button’s pit stop plan.
Grosjean’s had a poor pit stop, Checo will be in this lap. We need to go past once more, we need it now.
22Dave RobsonJenson ButtonCorrection we’re going to box this lap.
22Marco MatassaDaniel RicciardoBox, Daniel. Push now.
22Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenMix three. Watch your throttle/brake overlap at the Lesmos. Fuel consumption is still high.
22Simon RennieMark WebberEngine 22.
22Mark TempleSergio PerezBox this lap, confirm.
23Rob SmedleyFelipe Massa22 laps completed, let’s open a gap now to the car behind, come on.
23Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelRed Bull brought both their cars in on the same lap, allowing Webber to jump ahead of Massa.
Box, torque map one and box.
24Simon RennieMark WebberBox, Mark, opposite Massa.
24Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelYou know the target.
24Simon RennieMark WebberRaikkonen behind you on scrubbed [mediums] but he is quick.
24Fernando AlonsoAndrea StellaAnother radio exchange in Italian.
Rimaniamo calmi e facciamo dei verdi/We need to remain calm and let’s post some greens.
24Andrea StellaFernando AlonsoEsatto, spingiamo adesso, spingiamo e stiamo calmi/Exactly, push now, push and lets stay calm.
25Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergRacing cars, brake balance.
26Andrea StellaFernando AlonsoAlonso is given another position update in Italian.
Ok, dobbiamo tenere sotto controllo Webber, sotto controllo Webber dietro di noi, dobbiamo spingere al cento/Ok, we need to keep Webber under control, Webber is behind us and we need to keep him under control, we need to push at our 100%.
26Tony RossNico RosbergGood effort, keep pushing like that, Chilton in front of you lapped car ahead.
26Brad JoyceAdrian SutilWe need to push these next laps, Adrian.
26Paul DavisonJules BianchiYou should have one more lap of clear air, Jules. Let’s build more tyre temp, think about brake balance half a turn rearwards.
27Tony RossNico RosbergMagic off, please.
27Gary GannonMax ChiltonChilton is getting blue flags as faster cars lap him.
Perfect job on that blue, that was perfect.
27Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaFour lights on the KERS, please, until I tell you.
28Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelThis is more than we need. Alonso is still out there, he’s going to have fresher tyres. You need to save your tyres. OK just as a reminder, you need to do 30 laps on these tyres which is seven more than the previous stint.
28Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergDouble-boost for overtake if possible.
29Nico HulkenbergMarco SchupbachHulkenberg came out of the pits behind Raikkonen after his pit stop.
Do you think Kimi will have to stop again?
29Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergHe does, Nico, but we have to try and pass him. He does have to pit again.
29Tony RossNico RosbergJust confirm Nico it will be important to look after them now and we expect you to be fighting at the end of the race with the cars in front. Podium position chance.
29Simon RennieMark WebberRemember we need to get to the end on this set. We need to finish the race on this set of tyres so be sensible. At the moment your slip is good, we need to keep it there.
29Andrea StellaFernando AlonsoAlonso is given the gap between him and the chasing Webber in Italian.
0.9 al traguardo/0.9 at the finishing line.
30Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenLotus kept Raikkonen out to ensure he did not come out of the pits behind Maldonado.
Expecting two more laps, trying to jump another car.
30Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeAre we going for the [medium] tyres?
30Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenYes Kimi, going for [mediums].
30Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeOK. Half a turn less front wing.
30Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenOK, half a turn down.
30Tony RossNico RosbergHamilton passed Rosberg on lap 29.
Lewis is quicker than the cars in front, you can use him to draw you up to them.
31Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenBox this lap.
31Mark TempleSergio PerezCan you cool brakes on the straight. Pull out of the tow to cool brakes.
31Tony RossNico RosbergSituation at the moment is you are P7 and Lewis is yet to stop.
31Paul DavisonJules BianchiShould have four more laps of clear air, Jules, four more laps.
32Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaRace at the minute we are 1.6 seconds behind Webber, we are a little bit quicker than him. Hulkenberg is three seconds behind and then Hamilton, who should be on a two-stop, is just behind Hulkenberg. It may be the case that Hamilton gets past, he is the car behind but he should be on a two-stop.
32Tim WrightCharles PicPic and Gutierrez give similar messages about improving their driving in the same corner.
Your last lap was better but you’re still losing time to Giedo in turn six. Sacrifice the entry turn six to get a better mid-corner and exit.
33Francesco NenciEsteban GutierrezWe think you can go quicker through Ascari.
33Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergHamilton in front has to stop again, Rosberg behind not. 22 laps to go. Good job, Nico.
33Tony RossNico RosbergJust be aware Lewis overtook Hulkenberg by using full KERS out of turn two.
34Andrew MurdochPastor MaldonadoWatch the wheel slip exit of turn one, exit of turn four.
34Nico HulkenbergMarco SchupbachI have to push like hell to try to keep up with him. Do I try to keep up or save the tyres?
34Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergNico you have to beat the guy behind you, Rosberg, the guy in front of you will stop again anyway.
34Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenFuel consumption still on the high side so go to mix one, please.
34Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergLast lap time perfectly on target, 20 laps to go, Nico.
35Sebastian VettelGuillaume RocquqelinTyres in phase one.
35Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelUnderstood.
35Brad JoyceAdrian SutilGutierrez is on medium tyres, he may come back to us yet. Keep pushing and see if we can get into his DRS again.
35Francesco NenciEsteban GutierrezRicciardo, P8, is only eight seconds ahead of you, and he is slower.
36Juan Pablo RamirezGiedo van der GardeMultifunction four, map three. Do not use the right paddle. We need to save some fuel.
36Paul DavisonJules BianchiBlue flag, Hamilton.
37Tony RossNico RosbergChilton and Bianchi lapped cars ahead of Hulkenberg.
37Mark TempleSergio PerezIt’s the front-left brake we need to keep cool. If you can cool it on the straights that would be good.
38Peter BonningtonLewis HamiltonMessage given twice.
Box, pit confirm.
38Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenWe’re expecting Hamilton to stop very soon, he should come out two seconds behind you.
38Dave RobsonJenson ButtonThere’s some traffic ahead, Chilton and Bianchi, could be an opportunity.
38Jenson ButtonDave RobsonHow many laps on these tyres?
38Dave RobsonJenson Button17 laps on this set and there are 15 more laps to go in the race.
39Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelFocus on track limits.
39Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenHamilton is in.
39Tim WrightCharles PicBox this lap, pit confirm.
40Jenson ButtonDave RobsonAre we still thinking Plan A?
40Dave RobsonJenson ButtonYes Jenson, Plan A. People have been doing 25 to 27 laps on these tyres no problem.
40Tim WrightCharles PicWe need to improve the pedal-crossing, Charles. It is better turn one but we need more.
41Brad JoyceAdrian SutilUse your KERS out of this corner to see if you can get him.
41Simon RennieMark WebberFirst sign of Red Bull’s gearbox problems which later spread to Vettel.
We have an issue: we need to short-shift in low gears, exit of turn two.
41Juan Pablo RamirezGiedo van der GardeA lot of cars around for blue flags.
42Jenson ButtonDave RobsonVery big vibrations.
42Dave RobsonJenson ButtonOK Jenson, understand.
42Sergio PerezMark TempleI lost a lot of time with the Marussia.
42Mark TempleSergio PerezOK, understood.
42Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaKeep it clean now, come on mate.
43Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeCan you ask what is OK how I overtook or not?
43Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenRaikkonen passes Gutierrez on the start/finish straight.
Stand by.
43Kimi RaikkonenMark SladeBecause he squeezed me off.
43Simon RennieMark WebberIt’s gear two to three we need to short shift, exit of turn two.
44Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaWe need three laps of four KERS lights before the end of the race. I would say let’s do them now and then we have full power all the way to the end of the race. So four lights please, for the next two laps. Pace anyway mate is very, very good.
44Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelShort-shift into five and into six only on red lights.
45Paul DavisonJules BianchiWe can’t do anything but stay mix three. Just have to try our best, mate.
45Marco SchupbachNico HulkenbergWe have three laps of fuel 11, use it to defend when you need them.
45Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanMix three, good job.
46Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenYou’re not going to get full KERS this lap.
46Simon RennieMark WebberI know we’re fighting but we need to short-shift gear two to gear three. You must short-shift gear two to gear three to finish the race.
46Brad JoyceAdrian SutilSutil has been passed by Raikkonen and Hamilton.
Those two cars had a tyre advantage so we should be able to stay in front of Gutierrez.
46Mark TempleSergio PerezTurn four could be a good place to attack.
47Ayao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanMix one-four.
47Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaHulkenberg 4.2 seconds behind, pace similar so no problem from him.
48Gary GannonMax ChiltonBlue flag, Bottas. We need revs seven to help us save fuel.
48Mark SladeKimi RaikkonenDo not use overtake button out of Parabolica. We are flattening the battery.
48Rob SmedleyFelipe Massa1.9 seconds behind Webber. He and Vettel have been told to short-shift, they’ve probably got problems with their gearbox. I’m sure they have anyway.
48Mark TempleSergio PerezThere is a backmarker ahead, there may be another opportunity when you go past him.
48Andrew MurdochPastor MaldonadoSix laps to go.
49Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaSeven-tenths in the middle sector you just took out of him, come on. Go mixture P6. Come on, boy.
49Gary GannonMax ChiltonWe think you are downshifting too early.
49Gary GannonMax ChiltonWe need to start lifting at the end of the straights to save fuel to get to the end. We’ll let you know how it’s going.
50Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelTry to protect the fronts under braking.
50Giedo van der GardeJuan Pablo RamirezThere’s something wrong with the engine braking.
50Juan Pablo RamirezGiedo van der GardeYou are out of sequence with the paddle.
51Francesco NenciEsteban GutierrezBig two laps now, push, push.
52Rob SmedleyFelipe MassaTwo laps to go at the end of this lap. Hulkenberg 2.4 seonds behind doing 26.8s, around about four-tenths quicker.
52Mark TempleSergio PerezLet’s give it everything for these last three, see if we can get some points.
52Gary GannonMax ChiltonWe need more lifting, more fuel saving, just to get to the end.
53Guillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelLast lap, just bring it home. We’ve got enugh issues, just bring it home, OK? Easy last lap.
53Brad JoyceAdrian SutilSutil retired on the last lap.
Pits this lap we have a brake issue.
VLChristian HornerSebastian VettelFantastic Seb, you’ve won the Italian Grand Prix again! Well done, brilliant drive.
VLGuillaume RocquelinSebastian VettelGood job, mate.
VLSebastian VettelGuillaume RocquelinWoohoo! Yes! Very, very good boys. Very good. Great race. Sorry for the lock-up in the first corner, made the first stint a bit tricky. Thank you.

VLChristian HornerSebastian VettelActor David Hasslehoff was at the race.
Big A, Adrian. We were going to send The Hoff up but he’s not part of the team.
VLSebastian VettelChristian HornerBritta Roeske is Vettel’s public relations representative.
Send up The Hoff! Get Britta on the podium. I won’t go, then.
VLChristian HornerSebastian VettelOK, no problem! Adrian’s coming.
VLSebastian VettelChristian HornerIs there still somebody on the radio? Is there still somebody there?
VL?Sebastian VettelYeah, mate. We’re just speechless mate. It’s been a tough one. I tell you what, since you’re bored, can we have 100% of KERS, please? Make you work ’til the end.
VLChristian HornerSebastian VettelThat’s win number 40 for the team, Seb, 32 for you, moves you ahead of Mr Mansell. And yeah, I mean, fantastic. Good stop from the guys, today, fastest stops of the day and great team performance. Well done, really proud of you.
VLAndrea StellaFernando AlonsoA final message to Alonso in Italian.
Pi?â?? che lottare come leoni, non si puo fare, ed oggi, questo week end, l’ abbiamo fatto/We can’t do anything more than fighting like lions, and today, this weekend, we did it.
VLSimon RennieMark WebberStop the car, please. Slow down, downshift to first, then neutral, please. Stop at the pit exit if you can. Nice job today, mate.

VLAyao KomatsuRomain GrosjeanGood job, good recovery.
VLPeter BonningtonLewis HamiltonJust for comedy value: Lewis this is a radio check on the in-lap.
VLDave RobsonJenson ButtonGreat job, JB. That’s got to be one of your hardest-fought points. Not an esay race but some good attacking, some good defending. We got a point, well done mate.
VLJenson ButtonDave RobsonI feel like I’ve been in a washing machine. You’ll see the flat spot when I get back. Not sure the one was the way to go. In traffic we were screwed a little bit.
VLDave RobsonJenson ButtonYeah, absolutely. One or two stop were close and maybe we didn’t quite get it right. Traffic was a bit annoying. But yeah, you’re right, ultimately we just didn’t have the pace. But let’s keep cracking on, we got a point and we can still make up a few places by the end of the season.
VLJenson ButtonDave RobsonYeah, obviously we need to have a good look at the starts, we lost a lot there.

Why not mentioning a translation of Italian radioed messages? Or to put them in Italian so nobody can accuse “misinterpreting”

    1. @omarr-pepper I speak a little Italian but not enough to translate much of what gets said. If I can obtain a translation I’m happy with I will add it.

@keithcollantine it’s not your fault. But your source (FOM?) should write their messages, in Italian, Portuguese or whatever language Ferrari chooses

        1. @omarr-pepper To be clear, the source is the broadcasts themselves, which I have transcribed.

@keithcollantine so you do it all? WOW Keith double outstanding job!!!!

      2. Thanks Keith and a big thank you to @Cucamest for giving us the italian messages in translation as well now!
I would love if you could do that for the other races as well :-)

Oh, there is one that was missed (lap 17), maybe just forgot to add it to the article though

    2. Can’t just Ferrari speak in English!

They are the only team association (driver/engineer) doing that, I don’t hear Rocky talking to Vettel in German code message or the same in Italian to Massa from Smedley.

That’s just comedy. I’m understanding Italian a bit as I’m talkingboth French & Spanish, but what”s the point of that as radio messages are broadcasted two minutes after they happen?

      1. @jeff1s Obviously Ferrari aren’t radioing Alonso for the benefit of television viewers, they’re doing that to exchange information. If they prefer to do that in Italian, for whatever reason, that’s their call.

      2. Ricciardo also spoke Italian, I think in practice.

  2. “Magic off, please”.
Worked a treat! Rosberg was completely anonymous in the race…

    1. Hahaha good one

    2. Terrible strategy… Magic On works better.

  3. What’s with the Hoff and Britta and Seb not going then? Didn’t get that!

    1. It’s David Hasselhoff, he was there in Monza. As for Britta, I don’t know…

      1. I know about the Hoff, I just didn’t understand what he meant by:
“Send up The Hoff! Get Britta on the podium. I won’t go, then.”
Whats the I won’t go then?
        Is Britta his spokesperson?

        1. britta is the person who records what seb says in interviews

        2. He was joking… in the radio message you can heard both Horner and Seb laughing

    2. @magon4 I’ve added explanations for those.

  4. Lewis’ race engineer is nothing but persistent on those radio checks. :)

  5. Obviously the Merc Magic does not work wonders in Monza .

Comedic value radio check ? ouch .

Any idea who the Hoff might be @vettel1 ?

Sounds like Kimi had a lot of tech snags to be wary of .

    1. David Hasselhoff.

    2. Scratch that . David hasselhoff. got it

    3. We all love the Hoff ;) Even though he only appears in crappy movies these days (such as that god-awful Piranha 3DD) @hamilfan!

      1. We respect the Hoff! The guy drove the best imaginary car in the world: KITT

  6. What does this mean?
14 Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Understood. Remember front wing rotary is still working.

What is a “front wing rotary”?

    1. @joshua-mesh The rotary dial on the steering wheel allows the drivers to change various settings, they must have one relating to the front wing, though of course they can’t adjust the front wing directly as they used to be able to.

      1. Interesting. Any idea what the driver would/could be able to control about the front wing that could be performed from a rotary switch?

Thanks for this radio feature btw, it has become something of an addiction for me now to eke out the time til the next race :-)

        1. The front wing rotary is simply a way for the driver to communicate how much of a front wing adjustment he’d like at the next pit stop. The position the driver sets the dial to is picked up by the engineers via telemetry. This keeps the info secret, unlike radio broadcast of the setting.
Red Bull a similar dial to describe the tyre condition to the pits.

          1. Got it, thanks. I’m beginning to understand the need for all the dials and switches on the steering wheel now :-)

  7. But Kimi really “what is that?” :D :D he knows what a front wing and understeer is, apart from that no idea. I think Alonso will beat him senseless next year… please prove us wrong iceman.

    1. Not sure where you got the “What” the only transcript that is similar is “Why is that ?” and that was a perfectly normal question to ask when someone is telling you, you need to stop overlapping throttle and brakes. I’m pretty sure Kimi is gonna beat senseless Alonso just for speed, the problem is next year car will be designed towards Alonso. But Kimi is way better than Alonso in any aspect of racing. Alonso is 50% Santander, 50% racer.

      1. @schumonen My Bad :) I guess I’m in a place where I’m imagining Kimi having all sorts of frustrating Sunday in 2014 and this is where Alonso will have the edge, he’ll be a step ahead in setup and understanding the new car, also he’ll be a step ahead because he’ll lobby for any advantage over the quiet and apolitical Finn. And Ferrari have been notorious these pas years for building cars that are more complicated and difficult to drive – that’s what would have made RB the perfect place for Kimi. I hope, on the other hand, that the effect of Allison and De Beer works for Kimi, they’ve worked with him before and immensely influence a Kimi friendly car. I for one want Kimi to beat Alonso, at least have a clear advantage by mid season, so that Nando has to play “Numero Due” for once :D, but again, realistically, I dread the moment when we hear: “Kimi, Fernando has to pass, he’s fighting for the Championship”.

  8. There was another message during the race which wasn’t broadcast at the time which can be heard on the FOM video highlights: Vettel being told to ‘remember Senna 1988’ during the race, a reference to Senna losing the lead in a collision with a backmarker.

@keithcollantine which means Vettel has a F1 enciclopaedia in his head? I barely remember specific events from Senna, Mansell or Prost times, and I’m older than Seb (3 years older)

      1. I am pretty sure he does @omarr-pepper, Vettel is one of the drivers who is most knowledgeable about the sport and its history.

    2. @keithcollantine Didn’t they say it to Vettel once before, earlier this year?

      1. @hunocsi Yes, in Canada for a slightly different reason. To stop him from going for a fastest lap.
        http://grandprix247.com/2013/06/10/roquelin-to-vettel-monaco-1988-senna/

      2. And when he had his gearbox issue in Brazil 2011, he made a reference to Senna, 91

    3. @keithcollantine they’ve used some artful editing of audio and vision in the FOM highlights video of Monza, if that was the only footage of the Italian GP you saw you’d have no idea that Vettel was booed on the podium!

    4. It just goes to show that Rocky knows his driver so well – he of course will know that Vettel will get the reference I assume!

  9. Why would Lewis have had to keep his steering wheel straight for as long as possible?

    1. Michael Brown (@)

      To minimize speed lost

  10. Lap 8 to Pic

You are going to fast in and too slow in the mid-corner, turn six.

Either a garbled message or a typo, I assume.

    1. why is it a typo? going too fast into the corner and being too slow mid corner seems possible

  11. Guillaume Rocquelin to Sebastian Vettel: Last lap, just bring it home. We’ve got enugh issues, just bring it home, OK? Easy last lap.

Poor Rocky, he was almost begging him not to GP for the fastest lap in the the last lap. :))))

    1. I meant *go* not GP :)

  12. Is there still somebody on the radio? Is there still somebody there?

Just nod if you can hear me. Is there anyone at home?

Red Bull seemed genuinely flabbergasted to win this. Even Newey was emotional.

    1. @jonsan

Just nod if you can hear me. Is there anyone at home?

      Yes.

  13. Stop the car, please. Slow down, downshift to first, then neutral, please.

Ha ha, some of these instructions are just priceless. Do professional F1 drivers really need detailed instructions on stopping the car? If I was Webber I’d have come back with “You don’t want me to stop by running it into the wall then?”

    1. Webber can’t see the data on his gearbox, though. If there’s an issue with the mechanical parts of his gearbox, I’d prefer my driver to treat the car in a way we don’t have to replace his gearbox either.

I believe you can select neutral on an F1 car from any gear, but there might be damage or wear which would turn worse if the gear selector is left on a higher gear. With seamless shifting sequential gearboxes, I think us normal drivers might underestimate their workings.

  14. Could somebody who speaks French translate what Vettel said after ‘Merci, Renault!’ Here is the video clip.

    1. @shena
He said somthing like “Merci pour tout! Pas mal!” so “Thanks for everything! Not bad!”
      It’s not very interesting ^^’

      1. @paeschli ‘Merci’ basically covers the whole message then. :) Merci beaucoup, Patrick!

  15. I really hate messages like “We think you are downshifting too early” and “Watch your throttle/brake overlap at the Lesmos. Fuel consumption is still high”. In my opinion, these are things that a driver should figure out himself, just keep the driving to the driver, don’t let the engineers calculate and decide what to do.

I’ve really put some though into this and I want a ban on team radio. So drivers will need to monitor their car themselves – a skill that has sadly been lost over time (in the 1950s-60s most drivers were mechanics themselves, which was no coincidence). Obviously they can’t monitor all the data the car sends to the team, so the cars will be much simpler: for instance the only parameter to monitor the engine will be its temperature. This will add a whole new dimension to Formula 1. Unfortunately because this requires driver skill, the FIA will automatically veto this idea…

On a positive note, I like to read how in control Jenson Button is: from this and the other radio transcripts you can really get a good idea of how drivers are in the cockpit, and JB wants to give his input into decisions where other drivers just go with what their engineers say. Also, I like the Rosberg magic message, as in “text ‘magic off’ to …” :P

    1. @andae23 I found the contrast between the messages given to Pic and Gutierrez on laps 32 and 33 quite interesting in that respect. They’re both being told to improve their performance in the same corner but Pic ‘s engineer explains exactly what to do, whereas as Gutierrez is just told ‘go faster here’.

Although it seems a bit odd for drivers to be spoon-fed driving tips like this, it’s obviously going to be helpful for them. It reminds me what James Calado was saying about his GP2 form at the moment – part of the reason he’s finding it difficult to make progress is because his team mate is so far off the pace he can’t learn from him (in GP2, of course, they have far less testing and practice than in F1).

      1. @keithcollantine I think it’s a difficult discussion. Comparing it to school, some students need someone to guide them throughout their study, for instance by helping them with their planning, while other student (like me) prefer to figure things out on their own. Both approached are different, but it’s not like one’s better than the other.

So if I say “ban team radio and let drivers figure stuff out on their own”, a lot of people would disagree I think. Anyway, great effort as always with these radio transcripts! :)

    2. That’s modern times. The data ist there, and of course they use it. To go without would be a sort of voluntary stone-age.
One has to accept we live in a world full of electronics. We all use it, and so does F1, even during races.

      1. That’s modern times.

@rankx22 I disagree: yes, we have the technology to transmit data between the car and the pit wall, but then again we also have the technology to equip an entire football team with headsets, or to equip ski jumpers with wings.

There’s a discussion in cycling to ban the headsets: by doing so, the cyclists themselves become much more important in the decision making, so as such the challenge for a competitor becomes much larger – which is much more fun to watch.

I want to spark a similar discussion for Formula 1. By banning team radio, the drivers will have to take a lot more decisions themselves. In my opinion, that’s way more fun than hearing teams tell their drivers “slow down, your pace is way too fast, look after the tyres, a bit more kerb in turn 5”.

        1. @andae23 Banning radios would also make racing a lot less safe, as you’d have to wait for a driver to pass his pit board to tell them about problems on the car like their brakes are about to fail or that there’s a problem on track such as debris they need to stay away from.

Same with things like red flags or safety cars. You’re most likely to hear about it from your engineer first than noticing the flags.

        2. Think of the risks: no warnings about slow punctures, oil on track etc. – that could be deadly.

And they would have do communicate with boards again (about times, pitstops …), which is one-way and cuts away a lot of tactics.

          “How about a neat undercut?”
“Don’t come in, we don’t hear you.”

          @andae23

          1. @rankx22 Regarding safety, I agree that it would be more dangerous, so you can have an intermediate solution: the FIA is able to talk to the drivers about major events like debris on track.

I also agree that my solution is not bullet proof yet. The general idea is to make the driver more important and let the team take a step back. Maybe there are better ways to achieve that than banning team radio (there are a lot of disadvantages to that, as you just pointed out), but it’s a start.

    3. They’ve had radios in the cars for a long time though. All that’s changed is that we’re now able to hear (some of) what’s being said over them. For some people that enhances the experience, for some other people it spoils it. My girlfriend does not like to watch the now common “Making Of” features released with every movie – discovering that Scene 6 was shot four months prior to Scene 4 and 5 spoils the movie magic for her.

  16. This one radio transmission is consistent for all Vettel pitstops

Box, torque map one and box.

  17. ‘Kill the tyres now. Push like hell.’ I laughed out loud at this during the race. The way his engineer talks is sorta half shouting all the time which was fit for the message in this case! Didn’t know Hulk used the same phrase too ‘I have to push like hell to try to keep up with him.’ Maybe they were particularly more high-spirited in this race as they were fighting for a super result.
Also Hulk’s VL message ‘You too, guys. Thank you. Good effort.’ Just a simple message but it feels very emotional. Especially considering his post race exchanges were often in a very frustrated tone this season, I’m doubly happy for him and for the team.

  18. Does anyone know if Vettel will have to take a 5 place gearbox penalty in Singapore?

“Guillaume Rocquelin Sebastian Vettel Short-shift into five and into six only on red lights.”
Seems like there may be a serious problem? I think Singapore will be the 5th race on that gearbox…

    1. The guys at Red Bull were a bit worried about that. From what I understand, though, the teams are allowed to change some parts in the gearbox without incurring a penalty.
If they can fix the problem this way, they won’t change the gearbox, if they can’t, it’s likely that both Vettel and Webber will have penalties, they both had gearbox problems in Monza.

  19. Hmmmm Lewis talking about lack of grip there methinks. Shall we call him Lewis no grip Hamilton from now on?

    1. Just remember he was on hards with heavy fuel load. He however, said that he was happy overall with the car.

  20. Excellent transcript as always, Keith! These articles are always a treat.

  21. What caused Red Bull’s gearbox issues? Long gears?
