Ten of the best pictures which tell the story of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend.

Kimi Raikkonen, Friday

It was a fraught weekend on and off the track for Kimi Raikkonen and Lotus. His participation in the event was in doubt to begin with as he failed to show up for media engagements on Thursday, then revealed that the extent of Lotus’s financial problems meant he hadn’t been paid all year.

Once in the car things seemed to take a turn for the better as he revelled in the switch back to the short wheelbase E21. But after taking fifth on the grid he was excluded from qualifying when his car failed a floor test. After declining to start from the pit lane a first-corner tangle with Giedo van der Garde ended his race moments after it had begun. He then made a hasty departure.

Daniel Ricciardo, Friday

Toro Rosso ran a special livery on their rear wing endplates bearing the slogan “Kullunna Khalifa”. The message from Abu Dhabi’s IPIC Group, owner of several of their sponsors, means “we are all Khalifa”.

Also visible on Daniel Ricciardo’s car during practice is an infra-red camera pointed at his left-rear tyre to monitor its temperature.

Lewis Hamilton, Friday

It wasn’t a memorable weekend for Lewis Hamilton, who qualified fourth after a spin and slipped back to seventh in the race.

Sergio Perez, Saturday

Sergio Perez out-qualified Jenson Button for the third time in four races and was McLaren’s only points scorer for the second weekend running.

Mark Webber, Saturday

It looked like business as usual for Sebastian Vettel on Saturday until Mark Webber pipped him to pole position – his second of the year.

Start, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Webber’s pole position advantage didn’t last long – Vettel passed him at the start and Nico Rosberg also jumped ahead of the Red Bull. In the background Raikkonen’s race is about to come to an end.

Felipe Massa, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Some opportunistic overtaking helped Felipe Massa pass Hamilton and Adrian Sutil in the middle of the race. But Fernando Alonso, in the background, was catching his team mate. Ferrari’s decision to put Massa on medium tyres for his final stint, which he disputed afterwards, damaged his chances of finishing ahead.

Nico Rosberg, Mark Webber, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Webber stalked Rosberg before passing him for second place.

Fireworks, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

There were fireworks at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but not on the track.

Sebastian Vettel, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Vettel’s latest helmet bore an ‘IV’ on the top for his four world titles. Victory in Abu Dhabi gave him XI wins this year and VII in a row – equalling the all-time record.

    Some amazing shots!

  2. I think that the picture, featuring Mark Webber at the top of the ramp into the tunnel, is an awesome composition worthy of some sort of award. The colour of the sky alone is not of this world. Brilliant!

    1. I agree, especially as the colors match the shades of purple that is featured on the current car of the driver in subject, such a magnificent composition, Red Bull should certainly use this picture.

    2. i completely agree, its briliiant…it has that 80’s car advertisement feel to it lol

  3. The best top ten pictures ever. All beauty… lost for words…

  4. That picture of Webber in the pit lane is ridiculously amazing.

  5. Abu Dhabi has a very poor layout: so many useless slow corners ! With 2-3 minor changes, they could have a great track. But I have to admit that the shots taken at this track are outstanding (thanks to the marina, the boats, and of course the sunset).

  6. The races may usually be below average, but it is the most picturesque Grand Prix of the year. That one of Webber coming out of the pits… wow!

  7. Great selection of photos @keithcollantine. Many things could be said about the Yas Marina circuit, but it is quite photogenic with the proper F1 subjects at night especially. Beautiful shots.

    1. definitely a great race for the photographers. Awesome pics.
Do you think the drivers ask for these??

      1. I certainly would. The one with Webber and the purple sky, where the art of photography and F1 meet, that would make any wall look finer. I downloaded it for my desktop, first time I’ve been inspired to do that in a while. I’d like to find out who the photographer is.

        1. You only need to look at the EXIF data.
          His name is Francois Flamand.

I’ve just scratched the surface at his website and he is quite a brilliant photographer.

  8. I do like the continuation of Roman numerals here!

Vettel’s latest helmet bore an ‘IV’ on the top for his four world titles. Victory in Abu Dhabi gave him XI wins this year and VII in a row – equalling the all-time record.
