Sebastian Vettel will take no further part in practice for the Spanish Grand Prix following his technical problem in this morning’s session.

Red Bull confirmed an electrical problem caused Vettel to stop just four laps into first practice and his car will not be repaired in time for the second session.

“Due to an electrical problem that has damaged the wiring loom of car number one, Sebastian will not be able to take part in FP2,” the team stated on Twitter.

“The team will use the time to fix it to be ready for FP3 tomorrow.”

Vettel switched to an earlier Red Bull chassis for this weekend. He ended the first practice session in twentieth place, while team mate Daniel Ricciardo set the third-fastest time in the other Red Bull.

  1. Tough luck!

    1. Bwahaha!

  2. Sebastian Vettel will take no further part in practice for the Spanish Grand Prix following his technical problem in this morning’s session.

Technically, he won’t be taking any further part today. :)

    1. I would certainly hope he can get on track tomorrow morning in FP3 yeah @optimaximal, even if they have to fly in parts from Milton Keynes.

  3. So much for engine upgrades. Did Renault give them the go ahead to pull more power into the hybrid part only for the perfectly packaged, but overheating Red Bull cable loom to melt?

    1. Same thing ;-)

    2. @bascb I believe this is a new chassis, which could mean a assembly or packaging problem.

      1. no, its not a new chassis. Its the chassis they used during testing he has now got instead of the newer one he raced until now @funkyf1. Although your point about assembly or packaging is still a viable one.

    3. Well, it’s reported elsewhere that Renault is not being paid by certain teams and that Renault says that cashflow issues are hampering development of the PU. I’m sure there is another side to the story….possibly teams not wanting to pay the full rate for an under-performing product. I read this as Renault trying to get a jump on the blame-game when engines start failing again due to failed “upgrades.”

  4. They just have made Vet number 2 driver this season – less focusing on his car, less experienced mechanics, no car development toward his driving style etc… Someone has to be number 2 driver.

    1. And how on earth do you know that?

    2. Yes they hired DR to take over for SV who has done a simply terrible job for RBR these last 4 years. And yes RBR’s main focus now needs to be designating someone as a number 2 because that will surely help them breach the gap to Mercedes.

      1. I think he was being sarcastic…

  5. Except for Malaysia, the man hasn’t had much luck this season.

    1. Must be so frustrating as they have just lost a big chunk of the time needed to confirm if his new/old chassis will make any difference or teach them anything about the chassis they just replaced. But that’s racing, and they won last year in part because they put a little less emphasis on this year’s efforts in order to ensure last year’s success, so they just have to keep that in mind for now and keep working hard.

  6. If this was Webber (or Ricciardo) there’d be conspiracy theorists running riot!
It’ll be very interesting to see how this affects the rest of his weekend. Normally he gets over these kind of issues quite quickly, but with the new cars proving more difficult to get the balance right, I’d be impressed if he could get back up to speed in time for the race.

    1. If this was Webber (or Ricciardo) there’d be conspiracy theorists running riot!

Well, I don’t think those theories just popped into existence. Obviously, people have a reason to always look at Red Bull with suspicion.
Your comment is pointless, and honestly childish, if you can’t figure out for yourself why many people have the suspicions and theories they have.

      1. Before you call others childish, may I just remind you of your own conspiracy theories, which were unfunded and out of touch with any form of logic, in a desperate attempt to label Vettel as a mediocre driver in a rocketship of a car.
        That was childish.

        1. +1
What reasons? The link provided by Keith on the other article should debunk all these stupid conspiracies. Only reason is the one listed by @mads here, and it’s certainly not a good one.

      2. people have a reason to always look at Red Bull with suspicion

Yes: that Red Bull were always beating people’s favorite team/driver. People didn’t want to believe that Red Bull and Vettel were simply so much better, so people made up excuses and conspiracies to make themselves feel better.

  7. obvious sabotage of course……. oh wait, it’s vettel’s car, not webber or ricciardo’s. Nevermind, nothing to see here, move along.

  10. Maybe there are things happening behind the scenes like vettel bagging out red bull and maybe threatening to jump ship or maybe already has so now they are focusing on ricciardo. Either way it would appear they like to favour one driver and for once its not vettel
