I think it would’ve been a Mercedes 1-2 again had Lewis’s car not unexpectedly snapped, and thus effected Nico’s lap as well.
But, shoulda, woulda coulda.
Congrats to Williams! They finally capitalized on a favour able situation!

Hamilton now under total pressure for this championship and cracking, dismal performance.
D (@f190)
21st June 2014, 14:10
He will crash tomorrow. Its so easy to predict. I mentioned after his first run mistake he would end up p10 and I wasn’t too wrong ! Rosberg has him on the ropes now. It should be an easy win for him tomorrow and the championship slipping further away from Hamilton. Its not over, but you expect with others seemingly catching up Mercedes will pick their lead driver soon.

He certainly messed up the 1st lap, but that was such an odd spin that I can’t imagine it was anything other than a technical failure.
BasCB (@bascb)
21st June 2014, 14:38
I guess it was a driver error that resulted in a bit of an exaggerated spin due to the BBW
Sven (@crammond)
21st June 2014, 14:14
That looked like a transmission-failure on downshift.
David BR2
21st June 2014, 14:23
Maybe so, to be honest I was distracted at the precise moment and haven’t seen the replay
However ever since his unwise ‘I’m hungrier’ comment, Nico has been piling on the pressure. This has led to smaller margins for Hamilton, including his run-off in the first run of the final qualifying session, where he just had to put in a banker lap. It’s all knock-on effects. He needs to stop trying to win everything instantly and consolidate or he’ll lose the championship in the next few races.
matt90 (@matt90)
21st June 2014, 14:25
He’s losing far more points due to car failures than his own errors or failings. That’s where his problem really lies.
Lari (@lari)

Hamilton’s first lap would have been faster – he was 4 tenth up on Bottas after the 2nd sector at that time. Unfortunately for him, he overcooked it in the last sector.

There’s been plenty of would’ve, could’ve for Hamilton this season, but as we know, it only counts if you can hold it for the entire lap, parts don’t really matter.

Absolutely, but I just wanted to say that Merc in principle had the speed to be ahead of Williams.

21st June 2014, 14:23
Considering how close they were to Mercedes during pre season test, one would have expected a better fight from them but due to some unlucky circumstances and some of their own doing, they couldn’t capitalise on that. But yes, today’s a celebration day for them. Lets enjoy the change we got to see. :) Hopefully Massa can hold that position in race as well.

Given how everyone is going on about Ricciardo beating Vettel proves that Vettel is overrated & undeserving of his success.
Do the same people also think that Rosberg proving as fast as/beating Lewis proves that Lewis is overrated? Afterall we have had 7-8 years of been told that Lewis is the best driver on the grid or whatever & would easily win the championship if given a half decent car.
ADD (@addimaf1)
21st June 2014, 14:19
There’s a difference between 6-2, and 4-4 in qualy. Also everyone expected Rosberg to match Hamilton. Whereas everyone expected Vettel to destroy Riccardo. Also race wise its still 4-1 where both Mercedes have finished. Could be 4-2 tomorrow, lets wait and see. Either way it sets up a great race.

Mike Dee (@mike-dee)
21st June 2014, 14:23
I don’t think Vettel is overrated. He was clearly the best with the regulations of the last 5 years – it simply suited his driving style well. He is struggling with the handling of the car, and we will have to see whether he can adjust eventually or not – he will have to if he wants to win again as we will have the current regulations for a while to come.
jack
21st June 2014, 19:52
“handling the car” is kinda of a huge part of the sport, and it is not as if he has being doing mistakes in which case he could adjust by having a different approach. He just has being “slower than Ricciardo”

**Three-place penalty for causing a collision with Jules Bianchi
I was looking at that. Why is there a difference in penalties for those collisions?
DaveF1 (@davef1)
21st June 2014, 14:32
Yeah, why is Bianchi’s DNF somehow deemed less important than Massa’s that Chilton has to be penalised less positions even though both Chilton and Perez were punished taking another driver out of the race.
Then again it’s hardly a rare occurrence to see the FIA stewards being inconsistent.
Strontium (@strontium)
21st June 2014, 20:45

Yet more evidence, if it were needed, that the out of touch insults leveled at the new formula by F1’s naysayers, such as those of Ferrari’s di Montezemelo, are nothing more than the aloof and anarchic mutterings of a team that has lost it touch. What a thrilling season. What a lens 2014 is to view previous years through: namely Felipe Massa, who many concluded (including me – who linked Felipe with a comfy Ferrari GTE drive, not a Williams race seat) that because he scored less than half the points of Alonso had lost his speed, but is now performing fabulously against his young hotly-tipped teammate; as illustrated by a GORGEOUSLY driven pole lap today. And that poses the subsidiary: if Massa is still fast, what kind of job was Alonso doing in past seasons to annihilate him so emphatically?
Ivan B (@njoydesign)
21st June 2014, 14:28
Well maybe Alonso is just faster than the fast Felipe?.. Look, he dragged that Ferrari into second row today, only 0.4s behind the pole.
David Margono (@woshidavid95)
21st June 2014, 15:08
I think that’s more of Massa showing what he’s capable of now that he’s not stuck as a #2 driver… Alonso’s one of the best, but he is still human :P
jack
21st June 2014, 20:04
maybe having the preference on team strategy and mechanics to set up the car is a bigger advantage than we think, just remember in 2006 Schumacher’s diffrence to Massa was about the same to Alonso’s to Fisichella and yet when Raikkonen went to Ferrari who everyone thought was a hotshot like Alonso finished only 14 point ahead. and 2009 when Massa was out with double the points of Raikkonen and Fisichella came in to sub him his diffrence to Raikkonen was HUGE.
Strontium (@strontium)

Well, this is set to be interesting tomorrow.
Looking past the front row, there has to be a big round of applause going Kvyat and Magnussen’s way. Absolutely destroyed Vergne and Button and put in stellar laps in Q3.
I don’t know if it’s the nature of this season, an effect of the new regulations or the fact that the field has been leveled up as everyone needs to get used to these new cars, but I have to say, this year’s batch of rookies (especially these two fellas mentioned above) looks VERY promising.
Chris (@cgturbo)
21st June 2014, 14:43
@tony031r
Agreed… But perhaps Kvyat and Magnussen’s recent experience did help accentuate their skills a touch.
Both of those just seemed to know the little characteristics of the circuit more than everyone else.
Of course their experience wasn’t in an F1 car, but familiarisation with a circuit can somewhat transcend the machinery you’re in.

So we have a season that so far has given us a change in the order, a tough battle for the WDC between teammates who seem to use every trick in the book and feel the pressure. It gave us 2 of the best races in the last decade. And we got a new winner already in Canada. Now first front row lockout for Williams in over a decade as well as the top 7 being within a second and speeds being close to what they were at the top of the tyre war and with V10s.
And the guys in charge offer us to “solve” the on track action by losing even more time from racing if we get a SC?? What are they smoking?
The on track stuff is working as it should guys, just solve issues with sustainability of the financial side.
Sven (@crammond)
21st June 2014, 14:53
“And the guys in charge offer us to “solve” the on track action by losing even more time from racing if we get a SC?? What are they smoking? ”
The viewer-numbers are decreasing. This is mainly due to wrong marketing-choices (and most of all, wrong choice of marketing channels, Pay-TV instead of the Internet), and since those in charge are responsible for those wrong decisions, they want to distract from that. Either that, or they are simply too old and too much out of touch to realise what they are doing, and are just trying to fight that loss of viewers somehow.
However, that´ll get better once Bernie is history. And LdM (the biggest burden Ferrari ever had), too.
