High heat still threatening to produce storms

2014 Hungarian Grand Prix weather

For the eleventh round of the 2014 season the F1 teams have moved around 800 kilometres (500 miles) east to the outskirts of Budapest, the capital of Hungary.

Here the weather conditions are much as they were a week ago in southern Germany – very warm, but with a risk of thunderstorms. As in Germany, however, predicting when and where they might hit is tricky.

Once again the strongest chance of rain is on race day. It arrived on Sunday in Hockenheim but too early to affect the grand prix – although it did help produce a cracking GP2 race.

For Friday at least the conditions should be warm and sunny though not quite as hot as in Germany, around the high 20C mark.

Temperatures will rise slightly on Saturday but with cloud cover also increasing the possibility of thunderstorms is introduced. Sunday is most at-risk again, but the unpredictable nature of the storms makes it hard to say at this stage whether the race will be affected.

For more updates on the track conditions during each session keep an eye on F1 Fanatic Live and the F1 Fanatic Twitter account.

real time radar of the country, Hungaroring is just a few km east of the capital (Budapest)

there is a chance of rain every day, so every session can be rain hit.

two days ago it rained for hours, so anything can happen

  2. We’re so long overdue a wet race, and hopefully a crazy wet-dry race!

    1. Yeah, hopefully a situation that allows the drivers to shine, not the tacticians sitting in the pits. I’m really fed up of a driver like Seb (and perhaps Lewis) being screwed over by bad strategy, I want to be able to see proper racing between the team mates, perhaps a wet version of Bahrain…

I fly out tomorrow morning and can’t wait!

My (normally reliable) weather app says that it should be blazing hot on Friday and Saturday but with storms and showers on Sunday.

    We shall see…

It would be great if there was a heavy downpour at some point during the race just to spice things up.

  4. Please rain on race day!!!! It never happens!!!! God is against us!!!!

    1. God is not against us , its just this year he’s doing his mileage in and AMG S65

  5. After Germany, I’ve given up believing weather forecasts. I’ll keep checking them, but will no longer believe it’s going to rain unless it actually does.

  6. I can predict exactly when the thunderstorm will hit – about 5 minutes after the race finishes.

    1. Or about 5 minutes before the safety car comes out.

  7. When will it be produced?
