The Mercedes drivers took up their usual places at the top of the times sheets as practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix began.
Lewis Hamilton had a margin of almost two-tenths of a second over team mate Nico Rosberg at the end of the first 90 minutes of running at the Hungaroring.
Ferrari took up their usual Friday morning position as ‘best of the rest’ – but unusually it was Kimi Raikkonen, not Fernando Alonso, who got closest to the times set to the Mercedes drivers.
Daniel Ricciardo had been the quickest non-Mercedes driver before an unspecified technical problems consigned him to the Red Bull garage.
Team mate Sebastian Vettel therefore took the fifth-fastest time, albeit almost one-and-a-half seconds slower than Hamilton, and complaining about car’s power delivery on more than one occasion.
Max Chilton’s first run came to a smoky end after an oil leak on his Marussia. That was cleared up in order for him to be able to rejoin the track just before the session came to an end.

Could it be that Raikk can make a good race here? Too early of course but I think he can. This could be the time :)

Mmm, Williams not in the top….But I’ll refrain from worrying, bcs this was also the case on friday last week in Germany :)

Yeah, Ferrari tend to pop up on top, or close, on friday but then drop back to 3-5th fastest team come saturday/sunday. Guess Williams were doing some race preparations.

Williams are only good when there are long straights, they have no down force.

I actually think this is the last year we will see Kimi in F1.
Breno (@austus)

He has a contract for next year too. I wonder if there is a performance clause, and if Mattiacci used the words “Hulkenberg”, “Bianchi”, “better”, “you”.

he was under contract for the next year when he left Ferrari…

As much as I’d like to see him replaced by a young gun like Bianchi (which will inevitably happen anyway), I still see Raikkonen being at Ferrari for next year. I think the humiliation on Ferrari’s part of admitting their mistake by dumping him after a year would be too much for them, so they’ll see out his contract.

May be a sign of things to come from Kimi. There are still 10 races to go a Lt ofvpoinys to be won. Also Red bull could be overtaken in the constructors if the Ferrari duo get going as a team.
Wishful thinking ? Maybe not.
Adrian Cotro (@under)

I think it’s time for Kimi here. He can do it, he’s more happy whit the car after germany, and also to remember his nice performance back in monaco :)

This means two things which are both good
1. If Kimi is doing this good just by FP1 luck than we shall expect Alonso to get in his usual form and move even closer to Mercedes
2. If Kimi is doing this good and is getting on form, finaly we will see both ferraris in form and more points from them. Also some good battles between them
P.S. This Mattiacci guy is looging better and better… lets wait and see coz I know that is too early

I wish the fight for the 2nd position in the WCC would be tighter, but I hardly believe Ferrari will catch RBR ’til the end of the season. We’re already in the 2nd half of the season, Ricciardo has more points than ALO, Vettel is very close to him too… and the weakest link is RAI, obviously. The points difference between ALO and RAI is the biggest from any team mates at the moment… and it keeps increasing. RBR’s duo is far more balanced in performances and results than Ferrari’s duo and I think things will continue as they’re now. Personally, I kinda have doubts even Williams will catch RBR.

Ferrari have no chance of catching RBR and taking second in the WCC if they keep designing slow, boring, uncreative, understeery wooden boxes on wheels that we call Ferrari Formula 1 cars today because yes, Alonso is a very good driver but his talent is being wasted by driving a dog of a car and hasn’t got a car to challenge for the title. At this rate, I see Ferrari finishing 4th with Williams in second and RBR in third. It’s coming to this point that Force India might be able to challenge them and maybe even Mclaren, especially if Ferrari are not bringing upgrades at the rate Mclaren is.

not everyone can win every year. Ferrari has had great runs of success, now someone else is winning, its a cycle that a fan like you cannot predict, and this years Ferarru car is not terrible, it is up there as one of the better non Mercedes engine powered cars. look at the battles in the last race with redbull and Ferrari. If the engine situation was as past few year, where the power level was pretty level, then Ferrari would be fighting for wins.

they’re going one step further with the green thing, they run entirely on LDM tantrums (if they can perfect it a little more, they will be quite a match for Mercedes! :D )

Makes a nice change to have a different Ferrari driver in 3rd for FP1!
Nice to see Hamilton’s car hasn’t failed him yet as well.
floring (@floring)
25th July 2014, 10:55
But of course. It was always Lewis and Kimi 1st and 2nd to finish this race, and since Lewis will probably win it this year as well, Kimi had to shape up so he can get his 2nd place trophy. But who’s in for 3rd?
I may be getting a little ahead of myself, though…
