Heat, humidity and chance of storms in Singapore

2014 Singapore Grand Prix weather

The teams have assembled in Singapore for the 14th round of the championship, less than 300 kilometres away from the scene of the Malaysian Grand Prix in March.

Singapore has a similar tropical climate with warm temperatures, energy-sapping temperatures and regular thunderstorms.

The latter is yet to interfere with the running of the night race, now in its seventh year. But the added difficulties that would cause beneath the floodlights are not hard to imagine.

For the now the indications are any storms will clear up in time for the competitive sessions, which begin at 9pm (qualifying) and 8pm (race). Sunday in particular has a lower chance of storms, however it is possible some rain will linger in time to affect the early-day first and third practice sessions on Friday and Saturday.

But even without the rain and with the benefit of slightly cooler evening temperatures, drivers will still have to contend with some of the most uncomfortable driving conditions of the year. Temperatures will be close to 30C on all three days even after the sun has gone down.

Singapore has also been affected by forest fires in nearby Indonesia, which has caused increased pollution and worsening air quality. This has recently led Indonesia to use the practice of cloud seeding with the aim of increasing rainfall around the fires. The nearest of these is in Riau, less than 100km south-west of Singapore.

For more updates on the track conditions during each session keep an eye on F1 Fanatic Live and the F1 Fanatic Twitter account.

Wow, rain in Singapore. I wonder if that happened in the race

  2. Living in Singapore here.

The haze has started to worsen over the last 2 days… hoping that it does not hinder the race too badly!

  3. I live in Singapore and it rains less than 10 times in the evenings in 365 days a year.

F1 needs to be very lucky to see a wet rave here.

    1. We’ll all be very lucky to see a wet rave, man! ;) ;)

But on the serious side, Wet race and night sky? Like the Singapore GP needed to get any harder!

  4. Indonesia really hate F1. Not only they not broadcasting F1 anymore (not even delay race day), they tried to sabotage Singapore race too now…..
It’s really hard to find some F1 chatting buddy nowadays here in Jakarta.

Yeah, I also do not got a channel which was Local channels (Indonesian) that broadcast f1

      1. Dont you get Fox sports in Indonesia?
I was there last year and watched the race on ESPN (which is now Fox).

    I can see a pattern here …

    1. @paeschli – I’m pretty sure almost every weather report this year has said chance of rain on Friday and Sat, fine on Sunday!

      1. yeah so frustrating. I want to see:
“A fine sunny day greets the paddock on Friday, with a chance of showers during qualifying on Saturday. The weather will continue to worsen overnight with a stong threat of heavy rain on sunday afternoon.”

  6. Wow if it rains I’m gonna feel so ripped off by this GP compared to Melbourne. There’s already no GP2 and rain means reduced running for all teams.

Rain at night isn’t any more glamourous than in the daytime.
