Motorsport Extra is a new podcast from myself and motorsport commentator Ben Evans.

Listen to our first episode in which we discuss Max Verstappen’s stunning Spanish Grand Prix victory and the astonishing collision between the two Mercedes drivers which led to it. Plus what’s next for ex-Red Bull driver Daniil Kvyat?

We go beyond the world of F1 covering the support race action from the opening weekend of the GP2 and GP3 championships, IndyCar’s Grand Prix of Indianapolis and Formula Three action from the demanding streets of Pau.

And we look ahead at the upcoming weekend’s action in Formula E on the streets of Berlin, the DTM at the Red Bull Ring, and Formula V8 3.5 and Euroformula Open at the spectacular Spa-Francorchamps.

As this is our first episode we’re especially keen to get your feedback on what you like, what you’d change and what you’d like to hear in the future. We intend to produce new episodes once every fortnight and if you like what you hear you can make sure you don’t miss any of them using the subscription links below:

    Brilliant idea!

  2. This is exactly the podcast I’ve been looking for. Professional, well-informed, wide-ranging, and not ruined by poor Skype lines and ‘funny’ sound effects (I’m looking at you Downforce Radio!)

Great work. Subscribed! Look forward to the next one.

  3. Been waiting a long time for this.
I’m a big audio listener so this is perfect. I’m not big on Motorsport outside F1, but you made it interesting for a newbie, even if I’m not able to watch it.

I would like more f1 talk.
Is this podcast a new weekly thing?

Also, you need an into and an outro to give it that podcast vibe.

    1. @yoshif8tures As I say we’re aiming to record fortnightly at the moment but if we can find a free spot to throw in an extra one here and there we will do.

  4. I hope the quality of the podcast is better than this article!
I think you meant formula e from Berlon and glean not clean…

    1. sorry, keen not clean.

  5. I could happily listen to Keith and Ben discuss motorsport all day long.

    1. @craig-o Things our wives never say.

      1. At least this now means we’re not talking to them about racing all day

        1. It does?

  6. awesome, will definately give this a regular listen, as always interested to know about more single seater series, particulary indycar. have you listened to midweek motorsport on radiolemans? they obviously focus on sportcar/edurance racing but it would be fantstic to here a tie up between F1Fanatic and radiolemans team, even if you were just wanting another media output source @keithcollantine

    1. @timtoo Ben is a much more avid podcast listener than me but of course I know the Radio Le Mans team from their excellent WEC coverage. We will be discussing sports cars too but as you’ve heard we give ourselves plenty of others championships to cover as well.

  7. Very good podcast

    1. @tango Thanks very much!

@keithcollantine ouch it’s geo locked! Instead of showing the play button, I have an empty space. Link please anybody?

    1. @omarr-pepper We haven’t restricted locations in any of the distribution methods we’re using. Where are you trying to listen from and what are you using?

@keithcollantine from my Android Xperia phone, it doesn’t appear the video. Now using my PC everything is fine!

        1. @omarr-pepper Which app are you using on your phone?

@keithcollantine a normal Chrome app. But using Puffin Free it’s ok. I think Chrome doesn’t include flash plugins.

        2. Hm, let my try from my xperia. – It doesn’t load on this page for me, but without any issues via youtube (app?) for me.

          1. And off course the “subscribe to podcast” works fine too (i used it in the standard podcast app, you can off course use your favourite or even play it directly in chrome.)

  9. This is something that I have been wanting to see for ages. What an awesome surprise on this sunny day! There is no better way to end the working week.

The first episode sounds very professional. It is obvious that both you have prepared well before recording it. The opinions are clear and well-founded. When I hear you talk about series that I do not watch regularly, it makes me more interested in them. So I have absolutely nothing bad to say at the moment. Well done!

    1. Thanks for all the positive feedback @Girts. We wanted it to sounded well-prepared but not stiff and scripted.

  10. Loved the idea. Just listened to it while focusing on work, and it was great! Are you and Ben planing on continuing this podcast for the forseeable future or was this just an experimental episode to gauge interest?

Already hoping for the next episode!

    1. @guilherme It does say first episode of a new podcast…….(not the kind of wording I’d expect @keithcollantine to use on something with a decent chance of being a one-off).

    2. @guilherme @davidnotcoulthard We’re going to give it as good an initial push as we can but as with anything we can’t do it for free indefinitely. So if anyone would like a spot of promotion on a motor sport podcast for surprisingly little outlay please get in touch!

  11. Shame nobody is on bike racing. I don’t care about bikes but I do love bike racing, NW200 gone and now the TT coming, not to mention motogp’s silly season. I never get myself to read the weekend round-up, the podcast is a great format.
Your opinion on the LH vs Ros is 100% accurate, I hope other people saw it that accurately.

    1. Really a shame, how can anyone who’s into motorsport/racing not like bike racing?! I love MotoGP and I can’t even ride a bike my self! The only explanation I have is there are more macho in those people than they know/care to admit, after all big fast cars are an ego boost that bikes will never be.

      1. I can’t ride a bike either! I don’t know about your theory, perhaps people aren’t drawn to both 4 and 2 wheels, that said there’s certainly a wall between car and bike fans.

@Keithcollantine I just wanted to add to my previous comment. My appreciation of your concise, sensible and rational take on the Hamilton/rosberg clash and all of the other subject in discussion. I have to admit that the podcast would be cringe worthy if I wasn’t in absolute agreement with the reasoning of every single detail discussed on the podcast. Everything you said matched my perspective on f1 and also in the other motorsports. It feels nice knowing that someone sees things the same way as you do. Well produced and well spoken, irreproachable. Congrats!

        1. @peartree To be honest, we thought we’d spent a bit too long on it! I think we left a chunk of that discussion out. But glad you appreciated it.

We’ve opted not to do bikes simply because we don’t feel we could do justice to it in addition to all the other forms of racing we want to talk about.

In these as with many things often the stuff you leave out makes as much a difference as the stuff you put in.

          1. @Keithcollantine You cover a lot of motorsports already, I understand that. Don’t get me wrong I was just mystified to know that many F1fanatics don’t watch motogp or sbk or my personal favourite the BSB. You could make a full episode of f1 that’s true but you’re already making a more solid show that the repetitive, artificial, lacklustre The F1 show.

          2. @peartree

I was just mystified to know that many F1 Fanatics don’t watch Moto GP or SBK or my personal favourite the BSB

OK I’m absolutely not saying that’s the case for everyone. But as far as I’m concerned, I catch the occasional bit of Moto GP and that’s it in terms of two wheels. I’ve never really been interested in bikes.

      2. Hm, not on topic of this new podcast (good job Keith, Ben, I like it!) but about not being into motorbikes. I have watched a few moto GP races and SBK too, but it just never got me excited as car racing does (although I admit that NASCAR has failed to get me hooked too, and since ages ago DTM went out of my sight it never hooked me back on again either)

        1. @bascb SBK had it’s hay day in the late 90’s early 2000’s and as any other form of racing it has it’s hits and misses, for instances when Rossi was winning championships one after the other, he made the races interesting, but ever since Stoner, Lorenzo and now Marquez, have started to win championships, most races end up being more processional than F1 races (*Motogp races are just 45 min long). I understand why people don’t get into motogp now, the fans are loyal though.

  12. I’ve been waiting for a decent motorsport podcast ever since I started a chunky daily train commute to work and this looks like it will hit the spot.

  13. @keithcollantine I can’t find the podcast in Stitcher… can you please make it available for Sticher maybe?

    PS great idea!

    1. Add me to the “Please submit Stitcher” crowd. http://www.stitcher.com/content-providers

  14. That was absolutely brilliant, love it. Is there a chance we will hear racing drivers making a guest appearance in the future?

    1. @andae23 Interviews are definitely on the ‘stuff to figure out how we do’ list because they’d make a great addition.

  15. Brilliant idea!!!

Really well done podcast – the quality is radio ready.

The only thing I would say is its a touch hard to follow as you rattle through different series – but I assume thats the main point of the podcast, its niche so to speak. I would of liked to of heard a little more F1 talk after a big race with a lot of talking points but thats probably more my personal taste than anything else.

  17. This was awesome to listen to! Great job! Hope it becomes a stable.

    1. staple*

  18. Forgive me if I’m wrong, but did Alex Lynn not claim it was is decision to leave Red Bull?

  19. Very excited for this. Get it up on iTunes, Stitcher, Overcast, etc!

  20. Thank you very much! I greatly enjoyed this podcast. Hopefully it becomes a frequent feature.

  21. Waiting to see it in “Pocket Casts” on Android

  22. @keithcollantine I use the Ubuntu-Mate operating system, which is a Linux distribution, and use the Opera Browser. When I click on the “subscribe” link I get a whole lot of that “http language”. Opera is normally a very good browser, and it also happens when using the Chrome browser as well. I tried it using FireFox, and get to the “subscribe” button at Sounds Cloud, but when I click on it nothing happens. Can you check your end as it seems something isn’t quite right? Thanks.

  23. Brilliant! I love a good podcast. I like listening to BBC’s podcast, but that is only race reviews and previews. I like that you also talk about junior series.

I’d really like to help with ideas or criticism but I can’t think of anything! Enjoying the first episode.

  24. I couldn’t find the Motorsport Extra podcast on iTunes and via the search function for Pocketcasts (Android podcast app). Please make sure subscribing is available via these options, ASAP!

    1. It was submitted to iTunes hours ago but they insist on approving everything manually which apparently can take up to two weeks (which is ludicrous). You should be able to subscribe via the first link, however – I’ve successfully used that on a podcasting app on an Android phone.

  25. Good stuff! I liked that it was all talk and no silly sound effects or music (so there was no need to adjust the volume constantly) – and of course the talk was interesting to listen to.

I think the only negative thing that comes to mind is that the podcast felt a bit rushed at times, i.e. you covered so many series and races that it felt like I would’ve wanted to hear more on some of the topics. But I’d rather see (or hear…) you drop a few of the categories rather than make a 1½ hour long (or even longer) podcast.

  26. Saw it on youtube, wanted to praise it. But comments were locked. Will do it here then.

Good job bringing in new content. I liked it a lot.

Can I suggest making these podcasts available through the “Podbean” app? It’s a very popular app for keeping up to date with various podcasts.

  28. Thanks for all the positive feedback everyone and thanks also for the additional recommendations on podcast directories, we’ll get on to those and update you.

    Hi Keith,

When I click the subscribe link, all I get is a page of code?

    Any Ideas?

    Cheers, Paul..

  30. Very nice podcast, just wish you’d do one on F1 only.

  31. This podcast hasn’t had any new episodes, is it cancelled?

  32. @keithcollantine – What happened to these podcasts, I really enjoyed them, is there a reason why you stopped making them?

  33. Wishing Keith & Co. to start a new podcast…
