A new, slimmer version of the Halo appeared during practice, though Ferrari didn’t run it on-track.

Daniil Kvyat

Kerbs were a big talking point following Daniil Kvyat’s major crash during qualifying and failures suffered by other drivers. However there were no further kerb-related problems during the race.

Lewis Hamilton

Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes, Red Bull Ring, 2016

Pascal Wehrlein

Pascal Wehrlein, Manor, Red Bull Ring, 2016

Pascal Wehrlein narrowly avoided being penalised for lining up in the wrong grid slot by having the presence of mind to select reverse and roll back into his 12th-place starting position. The tenth spot on the grid had been left vacant by Felipe Massa, who had to start from the pits.

Start

Start, Red Bull Ring, 2016

The immediate grip advantage enjoyed by the front-runners who started on ultra-soft tyres was clear at the start. Jenson Button surprised by moving up to second place and holding it for six laps in the early stages of the race.

Sebastian Vettel

Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari, Red Bull Ring, 2016

Following another gearbox change penalty Sebastian Vettel was running a long first stint to move back into contention when his right-rear tyre exploded without warning. A third no-score this year further dented his championship hopes.

Nico Rosberg

Nico Rosberg, Mercedes, Red Bull Ring, 2016

Nico Rosberg faced the wrath of the stewards after colliding with his team mate on the last lap and dragging his damaged Mercedes to the line.

Max Verstappen

Pascal Wehrlein

Pascal Wehrlein, Manor, Red Bull Ring, 2016

He may not have belonged in tenth place at the start of the race but he did at the finish. Wehrlein scored his first point.

Look how much graining there is on the tires already right after the start. Not just the top 10 either…

  2. on the frontal start picture you can see how extreme the mercedes camber is, they must be ready for some serious grip if they need such a huge angle, almost like they wanted to get he most out of the ultra softs and be less than optimal on the rest

  3. Nice pictures!
