A poor start left Nico Rosberg down in fourth place at the end of lap one – and that was where he finished after a frustrating race.
While his penalty didn’t help matters, Red Bull’s race pace also proved too strong for Rosberg to overcome the setback. An attempt to undercut Daniel Ricciardo by pitting early on lap ten went awry with a sluggish pit stop which left him behind the McLarens.
Rosberg couldn’t make much impression in the final stint either, though he did close on Max Verstappen over the final laps.
The Ferraris were in a race by themselves, a fact not lost on Sebastian Vettel who questioned why the team would bother to bring one of his pit stops forward in an attempt to undercut Verstappen, a driver he was unlikely to be able to beat.
