The drama began early in the first practice session when Kevin Magnussen’s Renault stopped in the pits with a fire which took several minutes to bring under control. The team revealed he had been running development parts for an upcoming race and a fuel breather fault had caused the fire.

Jenson Button marked his 300 grand prix and McLaren celebrated by turning their motorhome into a British pub.
