Am I right in thinking that since the USGP started in Austin in 2012 it has yet to be shown on live free-to-air TV in the UK? I’m disappointed if so though I suppose that being a primetime Sunday evening race neither the BBC or C4 have any interest in changing their evening schedule to accommodate F1.

Without checking, I’ve a vague idea that it’s been live at least once. But you’re probably right about the reason, and while the half-live/half-highlights format bothered me when it started, I can’t get too worked up about it any more. These days, I watch most of the live races on PVR anyway (and forget to watch free practice at all).
I’m more worried about what happens when the current C4 contract ends. If we get all the races on FTA in the current extended highlights format that won’t be too bad, but I wouldn’t be surprised to end up with nothing at all, or – which might actually be worse – a crummy 30-minute show at 3am on ITV4. Ten days after the race.

I dont know about the reasons behind not picking the united states grand prix, but the canadian grand prix usually had very high figures, but that might have had more to do with the fact that the football and rugby (main broadcast sports in the uk) summer holidays are happening then, so the ‘sports fix’ of the general audience moves to f1

Well that settles that then. The TV times clash with the NFL matches that evening so I’ll be watching an exciting New England match rather than another boring F1 race.

FP1 is also being broadcast on Sky Sports Mix (Sky’s so-called Free-To-Air channel) here in the UK.
