Great starts by both McLaren drivers put them on course for a double points finish in Austin despite both starting outside the top ten.

Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button dodged the various first-lap incidents, picking up three and eight places respectively. Button, who had started 19th, then used his super-soft tyres to pick off Esteban Gutierrez and join Alonso in the points-paying positions.

The Virtual Safety Car period also played into their hands, allowing Alonso to gain on Felipe Massa, whom he later passed in forceful fashion. A more straightforward pass on Carlos Sainz Jnr meant he took the chequered flag in fifth place, equalling the team’s best result of the year.

Renault also played a strategically cunning move for Kevin Magnussen by putting him on super-soft tyres at the end of the race. They told him it would be possible to finish two places ahead of Marcus Ericsson which is exactly what Magnussen delivered, passing his team mate plus Ericsson and Daniil Kvyat in the final laps.
