Little variety in Azerbaijan GP tyre choices

2017 Azerbaijan Grand PrixPosted on Author Keith Collantine

Formula One’s front running teams have picked similar tyre selections for next week’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

The Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull drivers have all chosen eight sets of the softest available tyre, which will be the super-soft, for the Baku City Circuit race.

While Mercedes and Ferrari have made identical choices for both their drivers, the Red Bull pair have chosen one more set of medium instead of soft compound tyres. The ultra-soft tyre is not available for this race.

McLaren has opted for the softest tyre selection with ten sets of the super-soft tyres.

  1. What a surprise that we don’t have variety wow, anyone really expecting anything different when we still have use some mandatory tire in race?? The should loooong time cancel that stupid rule and let drivers stop 4 times on utrra/giga what ever soft or run race distance on set of mediums and THEN we would have variety. It is not exactly rocket science what i am saying.

    1. I really don’t know why this stupid mandatory tyre rule still exists. It’s ok to test something for 1 season, but it’s pretty clear that it didn’t work, in most races most of the drivers run the same strategy.

        Agreed.

In fact it would open up the strategy. A non-stop strategy could work really well at street tracks, especially now with the durable tyres and VSC.

  2. With as durable as the tires are this year F1 could get rid of the hard and medium tire and just take the US, SS, and Soft tires to all races.

Lots more soft tyres then I expected.

  4. So, is the Baku race going to be a 1-stopper for most drivers with SS and then S?
