Your nominations for the best overtaking move of 2013 have been counted. Now it’s time to vote for the best out of the top ten passes of the year.

Australia: Mark Webber on Paul di Resta

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EAUrd9rgpY

Mark Webber often found himself needing to make up ground following a bad start during 2013. Here he gets around the outside of Paul di Resta at turn nine during his home race.

Malaysia: Sebastian Vettel on Mark Webber

http://youtu.be/dScrRNTG5Jg?t=47s

Extra spice was added to this tooth-and-nail scrap between the two Red Bull drivers by the fact Sebastian Vettel had been ordered not to pass his team mate. Webber put up a stern defence but Vettel squeezed through to claim is first win of the year in controversial fashion.

China: Lewis Hamilton on Jenson Button

Lewis Hamilton passed former team mate Jenson Button twice during the Chinese Grand Prix. The pick of the two moves was a sweep around the outside into turn one, giving him the advantage into the following left-hander. No suitable video available.

China: Felipe Massa on Lewis Hamilton

Three passes from the Chinese Grand Prix made it into the top ten. Felipe Massa put an opportunistic move on Hamilton after team mate Fernando Alonso passed him for the lead.

China: Sebastian Vettel on Felipe Massa

Vettel wasted no time getting past Massa after his pit stop, diving past at the turn six hairpin.

Monaco: Sergio Perez on Jenson Button

Sergio Perez Passes Jenson Button @ 2013 F1 Monaco

The Monaco Grand Prix saw a few surprising passes including this ballsy dive from Sergio Perez on team mate Button.

Monaco: Adrian Sutil on Fernando Alonso

Later in the race Adrian Sutil surprised Fernando Alonso with this pass at the Fairmont Hotel hairpin.

Hungary: Romain Grosjean on Felipe Massa

Unfortunatley for Romain Grosjean he put all four wheels off the track while overtaking Massa during the Hungarian Grand Prix and gave him a drive-through penalty. Grosjean later said he thought he had at least two wheels still on the track during the pass.

Italy: Fernando Alonso on Mark Webber

Fernando Alonso took third place off Webber with a late-braking move at the Variante della Roggia during the Italian Grand Prix.

United States: Valtteri Bottas on Esteban Gutierrez

Valtteri Bottas and Esteban Gutierrez went side-by-side through the snaking Ess-bends at the start of the lap at the Circuit of the Americas, the Williams driver coming out on top on his way to his first ever F1 points. No suitable video available.

But what about…?

This top ten was compiled from the Pass of the Year Nominations by F1 Fanatic readers throughout the year. If your favourite pass doesn’t feature in the final ten that’s because it didn’t get enough nominations.

  1. Loved Sutil on Alonso, too, but Vettel x Webber was the most exciting to watch and the one with he most interesting repercussions!

    1. Sutil did well to get Alonso there and it was a brave move, but I don’t think it was the best of the year because Alonso was asleep on that apex.

To me a brilliant overtake is one where the defending driver does what he can to prevent the overtaking from happening, yet the overtaker finds a way through whether it be right on the limit around the outside of a corner or flying up the inside putting immense faith in their braking ability! Vettel’s overtake on Webber is a prime example of skillful overtaking and defending. As was the move by Grosjean on Massa, and probably the move by Alonso on Webber also.

    2. I loved Grojean on Massas at Hungary – but penalty is a penalty and it required a slightly passive Massa.

Vettel V Webber at Malaysia – everything about it. Attack/Defend and over several turns once the move had begun with mm’s to spare against the pit wall. Brilliant stuff.

Mark’s finger was the icing on the cake.

      1. Yeah, When MW had his engine turned down, Team orders were Multi 21 (see finger)
SV still struggled to overtake, Was a daylight mugging from a team member. This was not sportsmanship, this was a display of selfish childish behaviour. My grandmother could have made that pass in those conditions.

        1. @aaaa – Webber had to turn his engine down, he had used more fuel than Vettel.

It wasn’t a “daylight mugging” or “childish behaviour”. It was a legitimate pass, using the tyres Vettel had saved from Q2 the previous day. It was only twisted around by people like you to make Vettel look like a villiain & Webber look like a victim, when he’s blatantly disobeyed team orders of his own, at more crucial points than the 2nd race of the season.

Vettel was faster. He passed. End of.

        2. When MW had his engine turned down

          Did you watch the video?

        3. @aaaa

Horner later came out and confirmed that Vettel had also turned his engine down, just that he didn’t need to turn it down as much with his own fuel savings from earlier in the race. (here’s one source – http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/formulaone/article-2301639/Red-Bull-told-Mark-Webber-cut-power-Sebastian-Vettel.html)

So it’s not like Vettel knew Webber turned down his engine more, as far as Vettel knew, they both were on equal terms, Webber was just slow.

I can understand Webber being po’d, thinking he turned his engine down but Vettel didn’t, but after the fact, both were on equal terms based on how they had managed their resources in the race (i.e., Vettel having fresh options at the end) and Webber defended about as aggressively as a driver can without crossing the line (though close to a Schumacher on Barrichello in Hungary).

    3. what about perez overtaking hamilton and raikkonen in a single move at the indian gp?

  2. Gro/Mas.

  3. Surprised none of Kimi’s passes made the list. There a large number of his overtakes better than a few here…

    1. Surprised his overtake on Button in Singapore is missing..

    2. In the same register, no Button in USA ? He had a good one on the downhill …
      But still great selection overall.
Had to be Gro on Massa for me, nice overtake and deserve more than a penalty, true F1 racing and overtake to me

    3. @wsrgo @jee1kimi @adityafakhri None of them had enough nominations. The margins were very small – one or two votes here or there could have changed half the list – so you might have been able to make the difference. But obviously it’s too late now. I should point out the ‘Pass of the Year’ nominations were mentioned after every race and there were extra reminders at the end of the season. So everyone had ample chance to play a role in the selection of the final ten.

      1. @keithcollantine yes Keith, we’re aware of that. I just want to point out that vote quantity doesn’t automatically determine quality. but yeah, it’s fine, anyway it’s the member vote. pass of the year feature is probably the most controversial stuff we had in this site, hehehe. cheers!

      2. There should be a poll after every race for overtake of the race because I think quite few are active in the forum or where ever these nominations has taken place!

        1. @alexanderfin There are nominations after every race, they run in the forum and are mentioned in the round-up. They were also mentioned here:

Be part of the F1 Fanatic 2013 season review

      3. @keithcollantine
I’ve always saw the reminders in the round-ups, but didn’t realize if someone nominates an overtake, others have to mention it too to get the chance to be part of the end of year vote. Could you point it out next year? Because I think I wasn’t alone not knowing about it.

    4. Because if Keith put Kimi’s overtaking here, it would make the others look like amateurs.
If you want Kimi’s then better check the world best overtaking of all time.

  4. Vettel vs Webber was way too exciting to watch, a highlight of the season. The 2 laps long battle was never gonna end right, and while it did on track (i.e. they didn’t crash), it kept things far from cool afterwards.

    1. @fer-no65 I am wondering what would have happened if VET and WEB had crashed

      1. Remember Turkey 2010. Seb caused the crash 100%, and not happy with that he behaved obnoxiously to Mark afterwards.

    2. Jelle van der Meer
      10th December 2013, 20:59

I only now notice that Webber still had almost FULL KERS, that is shocking. If he actually would have used it, Vettel unlikely would have gone past at least that lap.

Ignoring the team order crap around it, these are the battles I want to see when watching F1

      1. Webber was saving his KERS for the straights. If he had used it in the run to turn 3, Vettel would have gotten him on the long straights later.

  5. I would go with HAM pass on Webber at Hungaroring, from the outside of T2 :o (should be included into Top10 IMHO)

  6. I was undecided between VET on WEB or SUT on ALO. I picked the latter, because though both were magnificient, contact-free overtakes, Sutil did it in the brutally narrow Monaco Hairpin, while Vettel did it in wide open Sepang. Still, I don’t want to underrate Vettel’s. Despite the after race controversy, the move was brilliant, and honestly, as much a fan of Webber I am, I had to agree with Vettel. But Sutil’s had… that something, you know ;-)

  7. Not a vintage year for overtakes was it. There weren’t any with real wow factor like the Webber move on Alonso at Eau Rouge a few seasons back.

    1. What about the favor returned by Alonso this year at Eau Rouge?
That was a good one..although not in the list.

      1. Ah yes, but like you said, not on the list (for the reasons Keith pointed out above). ;)

  8. choosing Sutil vs Alonso.
reason? it was Monaco, in unlikely place to overtake, and no DRS involved

    1. I picked up Sutil on Alonso because this is the kind of move I would love to do.

Vettel on Webber in Malaysia is nonetheless my favorite, that was scary and brilliant. Perez on Button was brave too and looks alike the one of Sutil.

  9. Alonso on Webber for me. That move had it all, such close wheel to wheel racing that you couldn’t put a whisker between the two, extremely marginal contact on exit, and around the outside in Monza with the Tifosi cheering on.

  10. Alonso on Webber for me. I could watch those two battle all day. They’re both fantastic wheel to wheel and know exactly how much space to give each other. I’ll miss Mark’s hard but fair racing next year.

  11. Robert McMillan
    10th December 2013, 12:53

Honestly, they are all too easy with DRS. The overtakes of the past era, pre DRS, these are the ones we should look at. I look forward to the day DRS will be banned.

  12. Voted for Sergio on Button. It was very good, risky move, and he made it just right.

    1. I voted for this one, too. It was very daring.

    2. Yes, so risky that when he tried to do it on Kimi he crashed into him…

  13. I was just scrolling down, waiting to get across one of Kimi’s. Scrolling, scrolling…
Now I’m just wondering, who is going to vote for the ones which only have pictures attached?

    1. Nobody, as nobody remembers any of these as they were probably asleep!

  14. Vettel on Webber in Malaysia no doubt, the fight was carried through four corners and had a scary moment when Mark squeezed Seb near the pitwall.
I wish more drivers would race instead of listening to team orders.

Kimi had some pretty nice moves that are not listed.

  15. I didn’t like the politics surrounding it, but VET on WEB was a fantastic battle. You can almost hear Mark cursing in his helmet as he threw it down the inside, yet he kept it clean.

  16. What about Alonso on Hamilton AND Kimi in Spain? I mean not one but two world champions in one pass!!!!!?????

    1. @guix Did you nominate it?

      1. @keithcollantine No, I missed the nominations… but I am though wondering how it didnt get nominated, even the BBC voted it as the best 2013 pass!! oh well…..

  17. Difficult in this day and age of F1 to make an informed decision. I’d imagine that some of these passes were due to tyre wear being very different for the two drivers.

  18. For me the best overtaking of the year was the one made by Fernando Alonso on Raikkonen & Hamilton on the outside of corner 3 on the first lap of Spanish GP. I couldn´t believe my eyes when I saw it: That was an outstanding, clever and incredible challenging overtaking manouver worth of a top class driver.

I´m surprised it´s not on this list of 10 best passes.

    1. That should definitely be in the list! Easily #1!!

      1. @krelk999 As noted in the article, if it’s not on the list it’s because it didn’t get enough nominations.

        1. Didn´t realise! I think I miss that… However I´m even more astonished now that I Know it wasn´t nominated. O-O

    2. Yeah that was fantastic. The way he positioned his car before the 3rd corner, his intelligent use of KERS, his bravery squeezing around the outside…very good move.

    3. I think the only reason that’s not on the list was because it was on the opening lap, otherwise I probably would have voted that one as well.

  19. I’ll go for Vettel on Webber. The only real edge of seat battle for the lead, that wasn’t in the first stint of a race.

  20. Seb on Webber then GROS on Massa.

Loved how Seb was so tactical.

  21. I’m surprised a couple of DRS moves are there, but Hamilton letting Alonso pass to get DRS in Spa isnt there. In retrospect, I guess it wasnt a pass, it was a defense.

  22. Sutil vs Alonso
My final nominees were Alonso on Webber at Monza and Sutil on Alonso at Monaco. The latter was not spectacular, rather a courageous move in a narrow place with no room to out-brake someone as the hairpin is approached at a slow speed, and the cars turn in almost immediately.

  23. Despite the Multi-21, surprisingly Vettel vs Webber is highly voted.

  24. Not sure ALO vs WEB in Italy should be included – you can see Alonso squeezed Webber and there was contact, as you see part of Mark’s wing fly off.

  25. Voted for Bottas on Gutierrez, as it was one of the few overtakes this year that made me turn away from the screen :)

Vettel on Webber is probably a close second: I still disagree with the sentiment, but merely as an overtake, it was a good, hard fought pass.

  26. The only 2 moves I recall when I think of overtaking this season before I saw this list would have been the Vettel v Webber scrap at Malaysia, and the penalised Grosjean around the outside of Massa move in Hungary so for me it’s got to be between those 2 and in the end I went for GRO/MAS. It was awesome.

  27. How can Grosjean on Massa be in there? He left the track, he got a penalty. It has the most votes at the moment. So people can only get angry when the FIA are stupid but can excuse themselves?

    1. That penalty was unbelievably harsh and IMO it’s the finest overtake in that collection, beautifully executed. Seb on Mark was a close #2, that’s probably the best wheel-to-wheel action I’ve seen in a long time. 2014, give me loads of THAT!

    2. I agree, while it was a stupid penalty. The move was deemed illegal by the stewards and therefore I don’t think it should be on this list.

  28. No Alonso vs Kimi/Hamilton?.

    1. Keith says it’s not on the list because it didn’t get enough nominations.

      I´m astonished too!

  29. Vettel vs Webber. They were pushing each other a lot. Just look at Vettel in T1, he had the inside, he knew he was going to be on the outside for the next corner, so he tried to ruin Webber’s line as much as possible in order to get him in the following straight. The same goes for Webber, leaving just enough space between him and the pit wall on the main straight and not giving up around the outside of turn one.

It’s true that 2013 wasn’t a great year for F1, but this battle was brilliant, I think we will remember it for a long time.

  30. Grojean on massa was the best pass and should not have recieved a penalty, massa squeezed grojean off the track and he did well to avoid the accident massa was prepared to cause. Im sure if massa had left grojean racing room he would have stayed on the track.

  31. Good job finding so many videos Keith, 9 times out of 10 I cant find the clips I’m looking for.

  32. Easy, Vettel on webber…multi 21 Seb. Multi world champ Mark.

  33. We may never know for certain but there was plenty of discussion at the time that Webber had gone into fuel saving mode at the time which takes the edge of the Vettel overtake in Malaysia for me. Although it shows how much Vettel has improved since his clumsy moves on Webber (Turkey) and Button (Spa) in 2010.
I voted for Alonso’s inch perfect move on Webber in Monza.

    1. Horner confirmed Webber and Vettel were running the same engine setting during the scrap.

Also, if Webber did turn his engine down Vettel would have easily passed Webber on the straight with DRS.

    2. I think the differences why Vettel could overtake were that he had the medium tyres (Mark on hard) and that he is a slightly better driver. Definitely didn’t look like a difference in engine settings or fuel savings.

I think Mark would have had to save fuel soon after so eventually, Vettel would have passed him anyway. But it was a lot more exciting like this.

  34. Im very supriced Alonso’s move at the start at the Spanish GP, and Vettel’s move on Alonso and Rosberg at Bahrain isn’t on the list. Anyway, i voted the Vettel-Webber overtake, which is in my top3 highlights of the year.

    1. Iit’s not on the list ibecause it didn’t get enough nominations. That´s what Keith has written. Incredible!

  35. Hamilton on Webber at Hungary?? Great move!

  36. Surprised at how many good overtakes are not on this list.

The Alonso’s double overtake on the 1st lap in Barcelona was outstanding and hands down the best overtake on the list

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oDJ7WfUXLA

  37. I voted for Bottas’ move on Gutierrez. Grosjean’s pass was the best illegal pass, and Vettel on Webber was a great battle but I think it’s pretty clear that Webber didn’t give it his all so it’s not as great as it could’ve been (he is being extra careful trying not to hit Seb).

Bottas’ move showed great skill and even if might look easy on television. Overtaking there requires skill as Paul Di Resta proved by failing at the same exact move later in the race ;)

    1. ^^ there’s one unnecessary ‘and’ there: the first sentence of the second paragraph

  38. Went for Vettel VS Webber, the overtake had that thrill factor when Webber almost put Vettel into the wall on the straight.

I didn’t remembered the Mark Webber on Paul di Resta move, but wow, great move too, should get more votes!

  39. How come Perez double pass in India is absent?

  40. i think the best pass all season was alonso on hamilton and raikkonen in spain

    1. Me too! But many here don´t think the same.

  41. I had predicted Webber v Vettel would be the least popular to be honest!! (Not my opinion, just thought that because of the controversy behind it)

In the end I went for Massa on Hamilton. Threw it down the inside like Lewis did to Jenson in 2011, brilliant! I remember jumping in delight at that one :D

  42. Bottas on Gutierrez. Being able to pass in the esses get my vote.

  43. Voted for Sutil on Alonso. Brave move, surprised Alonso completely.

  44. Where is Webber on Raikkkonen at Silverstone?

  45. Vettel on webber was a good battle, but they weren’t pushing the didn’t risk it all. Maybe when vettel went next to the wall but he didn’t overtake at the corner.
Sutil on Alonso, and Alonso on webber were both pure race driver instinct.

  46. Since it’s very well established that Grosjean did NOT overtake Massa, and the video very clearly shows him at 6 seconds driving well off the track in a straight line parallel to the track with all 4 wheels, I have to ask:

Why is this included as a “pass of the year”?

When he didn’t legally pass anyone, and the video leaves nobody in any doubt?

    1. @hairs

Why is this included as a “pass of the year”?

Because it received enough nominations. If enough people chose to ignore the points that the stewards considered it an illegal pass that’s their decision.

  47. Vettel on webber.
It made me remember the good times of Senna and Prost

  48. was disgusted to see the Vettel vs Webber in Malaysia even nominated. Total insult to intelligence this one. I hope it’s not a case of look at his fans and see who the driver is, but based on such things, is there any wonder Vettel gets booed all the time? Best overtake of the season? Riiiight.

Pathetic. A big boo to all who nominated it and a bigger boo to those who voted for it. I bet you wouldve also voted the Rascasse parking as the best moment of the 2006 season and the Schum Adelaide chop as the best defensive move of the 1994 season. How low can you get?

    1. @montreal95 – Such a ridiculous post. You’re really comparing deliberately hitting a rival to someone passing their teammate without contact?

      1. @daviid-a If you really think that the overtake is what I’m having a problem with and the reason why I think it’s not worthy to be considered as a best overtake then you either really have no clue or no morals. So which one is it? “passing cleanly” yeah right whatever

        1. @david a Sorry for the typo, hate touch keyboards

        2. @david-a wanted to quickly improve but made it even worse with the typo in your name. Sorry to both of you

        3. @montreal95 The storm raised about the pass by people like you was total nonsense. Webber for all his experience, apparently doesn’t suspect that someone who is side by side as he comes out of the pitlane might be racing him. Yeah right. You’re accusing others (and Vettel) of having no morals because he defied a team order. Yet there’s supposed to be no problem with RB applying team orders in the first place. There’s supposed to be no problem with Webber disobeying team orders himself, at more crucial times than the 2nd round of a season.

          1. @david-a I’m not accusing Vettel and those who think this pass deserves to be in the top 10 of lacking morals because there was something wrong with the way the pass was executed. I oppose this as a break of trust. That’s the difference between this and Silverstone 2011. There was a pre-race briefing. Both drivers agreed to a multi-21. Both shouldn’t have done so, but that’s what they did. Had it been the exact reverse of the Silverstone 2011 situation(Rocky from the pits: Seb hold station behind Mark, Seb: No way in hell!) I would’ve lauded Vettel as I hate team orders unless one driver is out of contention. But it wasn’t. Basically Vettel just lied there pure and simple and you see nothing wrong in that? Hey I advise to invent another award for Vettel to win as bonus for best overtake: the coveted Didier Pironi Lying Schumbag Award. As easy a win as he ever had, or will have. Enjoy!

And if you also refer to the Brazil 2012 situation then the notion of Webber disobeying team orders there is a myth and a rewriting of history spread by a special sort of Vettel fans and/or Webber haters. Even Keith who is no fan of MW(that much is crystal clear), refrained from spreading it in any of his comments since he’s a credible journalist as opposed to armchair experts with a Webber-dislike syndrome. So as I said above, only the other way round now: I hope it’s not a “like fans, like driver” situation here.

Brilliant! after 445 votes, there in first place sits an overtake based on a lie and in second place an overtake made with all four wheels off the track in clear contradiction to the rules, while the real great overtakes of the year namely Sutil on Alonso, Alonso on Webber and Perez on Button sit 3-5(at least they’re in the right order). A real boo(boo-boo)st of credibility for F1 Fanatics right there

          2. @montreal95

Keith who is no fan of MW

Which is only true insofar as I wouldn’t describe myself as a ‘fan’ of any of them.

    2. it’s nice that you have just started to watch f1. but the lack of intellegence comes from you and you alone. How about you study the sport by actually watching races from previous seasons. Now if you had you would realize that the move you claim to be disquesting was an all too common event. Study prost vs senna, Mansell vs piquet, and mansell vs senna just to name a few…..

      1. @jasonryan Thanks for giving me a good laugh. I’m not sure if you were born when I started watching F1. Prost vs Senna was a disgrace both in 89 and 90, not to mention none of them was competing with one hand behind his back. I’m not sure which incident between Senna and Mansell you were referring to, but if it’s the Jerez accident after which Nigel was disqualified then it was a disgrace too. Mansell and Piquet hated each other so much when they were team-mates that there would never be any talk of holding positions etc. as Williams knew they would never agree to it. Again this not at all like the situation we’ re discussing here. Seems the intellectual failure is yours after all

  49. Not surprised that Vettel on Webber was top, it was a good side by side battle. But it was aided by DRS (would have happened otherwise, but it’s still a factor), done on different tyres and up until the battle itself with one driver unsuspecting, which altered the strategy. For that reason I can’t vote it top, but in saying that, how many of these 10 passes are relatively DRS free, and done on similarly aged same tread tyres?

  50. Where can I find the voting results for previous years?

  51. im amazed you got the video links you did, given the copyright minefield.

  52. Vettel on webber was the best tooth and nail battle of the last couple years…the dice between the divers was a nail biting fight, where neither driver was relenting no matter what it was either “win it or bin it” it was some of the best side by side racing all year

  53. Surprised at the lack of overtaking’s that have been missed on here. Granted the Vettel vs Webber one was very scary and tactical from Seb lasting several corners as mentioned above previously but there are others which should be on here namely the Raikonnen vs Button in Singapore, Vettel vs Alonso/Rosberg in bahrain, and the Spain one for Alonso against Raikonnen/Hamilton too. Can’t think of any other good ones if i’ve missed any of them out feel free to let me know.

    1. @ajmal92

there are others which should be on here

      Did you nominate them?

  54. Actually Raikonnen on Button (No DRS) overtake and also Raikonnen on Hulkenburg in Japan through 130R and into the chicane side by side with both drivers giving just enough room was awesome. I think Kimi overtoook outside of 130R in the same race too but not sure. Also a mention for Bottas in US gp same as Kimi on Hulk in 2012 US gp into the esses. Them three are definitely my highlights

  55. That very ballsy dive from Perez at Monaco got me.

  56. I promised myself to not vote for any pass made with DRS, but Vettel-Webber in Malysia was simply too intriguing. Best moment of the year for me.

  57. For me it’s GRO on MAS in Hungary.
Worth to mention: VET vs. WEB, PER vs. BUT and SUT vs. ALO (but this 1 not that much because I think ALO was kinda sleepy there, plus the McLaren hold him back and also braked earlier)
Rest of them, not impressive in my opinion. Just nice, flowing passes on the interior… like it was meant to happen.

  58. Perez/JB and Bottas are probably the 2 best but the Vettel/Webber was good even though it is clearly flawed it don’t matter for the people that liken F1 to soap.

  59. Really bad that Grosjean got a penalty for that, brilliant move, but I went for Perez’s, the guy doesn’t have much brains behind the wheel, but he’s got balls! Gutsy!
