Sergey Sirotkin

Renault added Sergey Sirotkin to their expanding line-up of junior drivers and gave him a run in first practice. He out-paced regular driver Jolyon Palmer by seven-tenths of a second.

Daniel Ricciardo

The shape of F1 in 2017? Daniel Ricciardo tried Red Bull’s Aeroscreen canopy during first practice.

Felipe Nasr

Sunday’s race was the first to be held on May 1st since the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix and the crash which claimed the life of Ayrton Senna. Felipe Nasr added a tribute to his countryman on his helmet.

Jenson Button

Start

Daniil Kvyat wrecked several drivers’ races – and possibly his long-term employment prospects – with some careless driving on the first lap.

Rio Haryanto

Also at turn two Esteban Gutierrez knocked Nico Hulkenberg into Rio Haryanto – the high-flying Manor serving as another reminder why devices like the Aeroscreen are under consideration.

Sebastian Vettel

Sebastian Vettel, Ferrari, Sochi Autodrom, 2016

A second hit from Kvyat left Sebastian Vettel in the barrier and out of the race – and provided a glimpse of the Ferrari’s front wing aerodynamics.

About the only time you will see Rio Haryanto flying on circuit.

  2. Nice to find out (via a colleague) that Nasr’s helmet reads ‘Nasr’ in Arabic, which means ‘victory’. Although not very likely these days driving a Sauber.

So he’s really Philip Victory, then? That’s a great name for a racing driver. You can just imagine the strip in the Eagle, with Phil driving a Maserati special he and his dad built in their garage against Moss and Hawthorn, winning at Monza on three wheels while running on fumes…

But I have to ask. Am I the only person who can’t help calling Rio Haryanto “Rita”?

      Yeah, thought so. Stupid brain.

      1. Who would win in a race between Philip Victory and Will Power? Maybe we’ll find out in a few years.

  3. That image of Vettel’s front wing is really quite impressive. It looks exactly like an aeroplane wing upside down.

    1. My thoughts exactly. Shown in a different context, it could easily be mistaken for a flying drone.
